Typography Write Up

Before I designed my typography I researched into other typography that I could take inspiration from, I went on sites like www.thisiscolossal.com and www.pinterest.com to get inspiration for my own alphabet. On www.thisiscolossal.com I came across typography created by a designed called Riccardo Sabatini he had created letters out of machinery, I really liked his design to I looked more into steampunk and machinery based designs.

After finishing my research I went to design my typography on Cinema 4D, my idea was to have just a basic letter but cover it entirely with cogwheels so it would look something like the inside of a watch.I used a cube as the basic shape and I extruded it using the extrude tool to make it look like a letter, the first letter I made was the letter “H”.

After I extruded the letter into its basic shape, I then selected all the front faces and extruded them inwards and then extruded the selected face inwards once again so there was a trench into the front of the shape. To create the cogwheels I used a cogwheel spline and an Extrude NURBS then edited the number of teeth, the inner outer and middle radius and how much it would be bevelled, to create each different cogwheel, I then inserted the larger cogwheels around the edges of the shape concentrating them all around the centre of the letter, for the smaller cogwheels I did the same thing but I copy and pasted the same small cogwheel multiple times and inserted them into the “trench” I had created previously. And finally I used a small cylinder to create a “nail” to make it look more like machinery steel and inserted them around the letter in the appropriate places.

If I were to improve on this I think it would create a great animation with all the cogwheels moving and spinning, I think if I were to re-create this I’d work harder to find better textures as the ones that I had were rather limited and didn’t leave much options.
