HOW DID YOU DO? Red pen your work…
1) A mandir is another name for a Hindu Temple.
2) Large temples are like small villages. They have lots of rooms with shrines to the gods and one main shrine room. There is also a room for the resident priest, who lives in the temple. You will also find a water supply to enable worshipper to wash before prayer.
3) The job of a Hindu priest is to look after the murti (statues of the gods).
4) Each day the murtis are ‘woken up’ and then washed, dried and have sandalwood paste applied it. It is dressed and decorated with flowers.
5) The first way a Hindu performs worship is by performing bhajan, which is the singing of hymns. This is followed by Havan where they offer the gods fire, whilst prayers are said. Then finally arti is performed, where a small tray containing five lights is waved in front of the murti. The fire is then offered to the worshippers so they may receive a blessing from the gods.
6) A tilak is a dot or strip of special powder, put on the forehead of a worshipper to show they have been to worship.
