Weekly English Tasks

This week’s writing task

This does not need to be completed in one day, spread the activities out through

1. You should have by now designed and created your very own alien planet. This week you are going to plan and write a persuasive advert, convincing others to visit your planet! Your first job is to make a note of all the exciting this your planet has to offer.

2. We need to use rhetorical questions to engage the reader. Rhetorical questions are a question that we would ask in our writing, but we do not expect a response from the reader, we want them to think about what you are asking them. Here are a few examples…

Page 2: €¦ · Web viewWith the permission of an adult in your household, watch Despicable Me 1, 2 or 3 and make a note of all the spy gadgets you find throughout the film. If you do not

the week.

Send us your work to @DeltaWorlaby or [email protected]

Would you like to live in the beautiful, warm sunshine all year round? Do you want to be part of an amazing adventure and visit a brand new planet? Is it time for a fresh start? Are you looking for something new? Want to explore a world where no man has gone before?

You will see that I haven’t used the same opener to start my questions. This is because I want to avoid repeating phrases so the reader stays engaged and wants to look through my advertisement. Have a go at generating 6 of your own rhetorical questions that you think would question the reader and make them consider visiting your planet.

Now select your favourite rhetorical question, this will start your piece of persuasive writing.

3. When we are trying to persuade our audience to do something, it is very important that we give them specific instructions. This is where imperative verbs are very useful and tell the reader what to do. Look at my example below and see if you can spot the imperative verbs.

Remember, verbs are action words and they tell us how an activity is completed. ‘I walked to the shops’ or ‘I sang in the rain’An imperative verb is instructive – Play, Find, Explore…

Want to explore a world where no man has dared to enter before? Visit Planet Tygo today and allow your new adventure to begin. Explore the wonderful landscapes that our planet has to offer, smell the fragrant scent of jelly flowers growing in the warm sunshine and taste the alien delicacies that are exclusive to our planet only.

4. Now have a go at writing the first paragraph for your advert. Make sure you include imperative verbs and a few rhetorical questions (not too many!)

5. In our persuasive writing, we need to include a few prepositions to add detail and description to our writing. Prepositions are used to express the time or location of something. For example, ‘The warm sunshine rises over the tranquil waters as Planet Tygo wakes.’ Beneath the mysterious planet lies a silent river that trickles through Planet Tygo.’

The prepositions I have used, describe the location of exciting prospects within my planet. Have a go at writing your second paragraph, using a few prepositions.

6. We need to include supporting quotes from others who have visited our planet so that the reader can see we are not just making our facts up! Here is one below,

Princess Rootha, an alien enthusiast, visited Plant Tygo a week ago and this is what she had to say: ‘I couldn’t have wished for a better trip. The aliens were so welcoming and the weather was so beautiful that I didn’t want to leave. I would quite happily move there permanently! I would definitely recommend a visit here.’

Page 3: €¦ · Web viewWith the permission of an adult in your household, watch Despicable Me 1, 2 or 3 and make a note of all the spy gadgets you find throughout the film. If you do not

When providing a quote, it is important that we include a few features to inform the reader.

Start with telling your audience ‘who’ and remember to include a comma after their name to separate your clauses. Then move on to explain what they do so the reader can see why they’ve visited your planet. Next tell your audience what your reviewer had to say. Use a colon before the quote and include quotation marks to surround their quote.

Think of 3 people who have reviewed your planet and have a go at writing a quote for each of these, using the same structure I have. They can be made up people or people you know! Now write your final paragraph and end it with a quote, you can use one that you have already written if you want to!

Challenge

With the permission of an adult in your household, watch Despicable Me 1, 2 or 3 and make a note of all the spy gadgets you find throughout the film. If you do not have access to the film at home, watch this trailer here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2bAEnBQWvM and make a note of the different spy gadgets you can see.You will need them for next week!

Reading task https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page

This week’s challenge is to read ‘Kelly the rescue dog’ You will find it in the 7 – 9 years old section of the website above. Before starting the book please encourage your child to use the front cover and blurb to predict what they think will happen in the story. Ask them why they think this and what there is on the cover/blurb to support their ideas?

Throughout the book, your child may come across unfamiliar vocabulary, please take the opportunity to research the definition of these words together, preferably using a dictionary but if you do not have access to a dictionary, then look the words up online. At school the children have been developing their dictionary skills by finding the first 3 letters to begin with and identifying the word from there. It would be helpful if you could support your children to do this.

Challenge

Can you re- write and change the ending of this story? Perhaps you can add a new character! Send us your ideas to @DeltaWorlaby or [email protected]

A few extra bits!
