01603 767526.8. Giving the Gift of Sight – Becoming a Donor

A couple of weeks ago we were pleased to welcome Mary Tottman, Manager of the NHS East Anglian Eye Bank Services to NNAB to talk to staff about the very important work she does.Although much is known about becoming an organ donor, many of us were nonetheless surprised to find out that it is possible to donate your corneas despite having had other eye conditions or surgery, and perhaps having little sight oneself. In addition, there is no age limit to cornea donation (the oldest successful donor known to Mary was over 100 years old!).Corneal transplants have a very high success rate and the benefits are usually immediately apparent so it is a wonderful gift to give someone, especially if you’ve been unfortunate enough to suffer visual impairment yourself. Understandably there is much apprehension from those of us considering donation, and from families following the death of a loved one, with regard to donating eyes in particular. This means that numbers of eye donors are really rather low compared to other organs. We were very reassured to be shown ‘before and after’ photographs and to hear how sensitively the staff at the Eye Bank work with families. If you would like to find out more about this subject or how to become a donor, please contact the Eye Bank team via Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital switchboard 01603 286286.

9. West Norfolk News Walks: the blossom is well and truly out and so are the walkers. No excuses about January weather and being too cold for walking. We have been busy exploring places we’ve only ever driven through in the past. For example East and West Rudham, lots of us have trailed through these at 30 mph on the way to somewhere else without realising some real points of interest. You would never suspect that there was a 30 foot Dragon lurking in the vicinity ot the

5

ruins of quite a magnificent Abbey nearby, things you miss unless on foot.West Norfolk News Continued

We have some really interesting routes coming up thanks to the support of some very generous farm managers who have arranged to move livestock from meadows we will be crossing. Up until now all our walks have needed to be circular, which can be a bit restricting. Fortunately we now have Geoff a new volunteer Mini Bus Driver: this means we can get dropped off at the start of the walk, but picked up miles away which gives us much more scope when we’re planning. So don’t miss out on the wonderful Norfolk countryside, come and join us if nothing else we can guarantee you will be entertained.

Men’s Group: The new format seems to be working well, although we could do with a few more members. I’m always amazed at how well they all get on with each other, given the age differences and the fact that they come from different backgrounds. Recently they thought they would like to take a bit more interest in the cake eating side of things, so persuaded wives to send along homemade offerings which could be judged (tongue in cheek). I really couldn’t comment on the outcome, except to say that they a had a good laugh. We have had talks on several very interesting subjects including the history of medicine and the renovation of St. Nicholas’ Chapel in King’s Lynn, which we hope to arrange a trip once the work is complete. We are most grateful to our speakers for giving up their time to come and talk to the group.

Knitting: as always, this group is well attended, full of ideas and bursting with enthusiasm. If the group needs anything it would probably be another volunteer who is able to pick up dropped stitches, who knows their way around a crochet hook and understands the metric needle sizes? Our giant throw is growing fast, we have butterflies and flowers to stitch on already.

6

Microwave Cookery: We almost have lift-off for our new kitchen, it’s been measured and permission has been granted. However this hasn’t stopped us from creating some wonderful recipes. We have tackled cheese and chive scone bread, fairy cakes and baked lemon cheesecake to name just a few. By far the most memorable recipe we’ve tried this term has to be the smoked haddock fish cakes. They were easy, tasty and nutritious but what a whiff! We shall need Angela Revell’s permission before we are allowed to cook a fish based recipe in the future. Apart from left over aromas everything is going well, the feedback so far is very positive. I am still amazed at how much I am learning about microwave cookery, for instance when a recipe says ‘cook for 15 mins on Defrost’ and you cook it for 15 mins on high a very different result is created and one which is completely inedible!! So lesson learned, ALWAYS read the instructions. If you have any enquiries about any activities at West Norfolk please contact Sue Bird at the centre on 01553 660859.

10. News from the YoungEyes officeThe first half term of 2015 saw members of YoungEyes practising our Bollywood/Bhangra dancing with Tina from Jaya Dance. It was energetic and great fun. Then we had a wonderful time celebrating the beginning of the Easter Holiday at our ‘Easter Bunny Hop’. The Activity Hall was rocking with 54 of us bunnies dancing the Macarena, what a sight! We also had our longest conga line ever and even went around the car park! Hot Cross Buns and Chocolate Eggs helped to supply the energy we needed. It was great to welcome so many families and to enable quality time together. Generous funding from North Norfolk Radio and Radio Norwich towards our Music and Drama Fund is enabling us to organise various fun events that encourage creativity and help to develop confidence and self-esteem.

13. News from the Fundraising DepartmentThere’s no doubt that the main focus of attention for the team working within the fundraising department has been the management and promotion of the 2015 NNAB Norfolk Show Ball.

15

This prestigious summertime event demands a full time work ethic, and so it should, as the charity has a wonderful opportunity to raise its profile in front of over 800 paying guests as well as benefit from some serious fundraising on the night. However, it’s not the only event planned this year to help generate income. We have already staged a Blind Dining event and a DixieMix Jazz evening, both successful and profitable for the charity. A giant zip wire challenge, the annual NNAB golf and the Versazca Dam bungee jump challenge are all in the diary too. These are just some of the events taking place in what is proving to be a very busy 2015. Thank you to all the volunteers helping us achieve this year. Your support is very much appreciated

We are also trying to organise lots of external mini events, as well as encouraging our supporters and members to be their own little fundraisers at home or in their community. Such as a coffee morning, a fete or table top sale, a collection at their local school or club. Anything that can help the charity in promoting the work that we do, as well as raising a little bit of money, it really appreciated. If you would like to support us in this way and would like some suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Here is a list of events that we have booked so far this year. Please tell all of your friends and families about them, as they might like to support us and also if you are interested in coming, please call us;-

NNAB Zip Wire Challenge on Saturday 16th MayA team will be travelling to North Wales to do the longest, fastest Zip wire in Europe. The zip wire challenge is being staged at the Penrhyn Quarry, at Bethesda on May 16th.

14. News from the Magpie News OfficeDue to the ever increasing cost of printing, postage materials and man hours to produce the Magpie News we are considering reducing it from 4 issues a year to 2. Before we do this we would very much like to hear your opinion on this decision. We look forward to your feedback. Please feel free to use the return slip to share your views.

15. Shuffle Board Free ‘Taster’ SessionShuffleboard is a game in which players use cues to push weighted discs, sending them gliding down a narrow and elongated court, with the purpose of having them come to rest within a marked scoring area. A free ‘taster’ session is being held at the Bradbury Activity Centre on Monday 29th June at 10am-12pm. This fun and easy game originates from America but is becoming increasingly popular

18

here in Britain. If you would like to come along a try this new game please contact Donna Hewitt on 01603 629558.
