Honoring Mary ~~ Our Lady of Guadalupe ~~The Apparition of Mary at Guadalupe

The Spanish conquest of Mexico by Cortez began in 1521. The Indians were easily defeated. They were brutally mistreated. Their homes and temples were plundered and destroyed. Many Mexican Indians were slain. The local Bishop prayed to Mary that she would intercede to God to help his people. Within ten years of the conquest, Mary would come to the help of these oppressed people.

On December 9, 1531, Juan Diego, a 57 year old Aztec, was on his way to Church when he saw a beautiful Indian girl, dressed in a colorful cape, surrounded by golden beams of light. The girl appeared to be about sixteen years of age. This took place on Tepeyac, a hill in Mexico City. The girl was our Blessed Mother Mary. Mary told Juan Diego that she wanted “a church built.” When Juan Diego went to the Bishop to tell him, the Bishop did not believe him and told Juan to ask Mary for a sign.

Three days later, on December 12, 1531, Mary appeared again to Juan Diego. Juan Diego asked the Blessed Mother for a sign that he might tell the Bishop. Mary asked Juan to pick some roses at the place of the apparition. This seemed impossible given the season – the month of December – and the place – a rocky hill. But Juan Diego found roses and filled his cloak (tilma). When he unrolled his cloak to show the Bishop, the image of Mary was imprinted on the cloak (tilma).

The Statue of Our Lady of GuadalupeThe Statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe which will grace our Church throughout the month of May has been borrowed from Saint Richard Parish in South Philadelphia. May Our Lady of Guadalupe who has been a source of grace and inspiration for the people there be the same for us.

Artistic Expression of Our Lady of Guadalupe – Features of the Statue

Su pport angel underneath the crescent moon - signifies Mary’s role as a messenger sent by God

Crescent Moon - as the moon reflects sunlight, Mary reflects light of her son, Jesus, the Light of the World

Limbus or gold border on her mantle - signifies nobility

Rose or pale-red color of Mary’s dress - signifies color of dawn, symbolizing the beginning of a new era

Stars - a sign that a new civilization or era is beginning

Gold-encircled cross brooch under Mary’s neck - symbol of sanctity

Eyes - Mary’s eyes are looking down, a position of humility

Face - shows great compassion and beauty. The Indians felt that the face was the window of the inner person,a means by which one could read who a person was – the way a person would act.

Sun rays - Behind the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe are sun rays. The sun was important to the Mexican Indians. The Mexican people knew the sun had power to provide light, to warm the earth and to make things grow. The sun played a key role in their civilization. Mary blocks the sun by standing in front of it. She hides the sun and only the rays can be seen. This told the Mexican Indians that God is more powerful than the sun. God is the creator of life. God has the power to make all creation grow. God has the power to make love and peace grow.

Mantel - color is turquoise, blue-green – the color of a cactus plant, the fibers of which were used by the

Astec Indians to make clothing. By wearing it, Mary identified herself with the Astecs.#1-016Dear Parishioners,

MystagogyAs a Church we continue to celebrate Easter.

We do so for 50 days. Throughout this Easter Season we are called to reflect upon our experience of how Jesus has graced us with forgiveness, recovery, Easter and New life. These recollections are meant to reassure us that Jesus, who has been with us in the past, will be with us in the future.

The questions to ask yourself daily during the Easter Season are, “How has Jesus been at work in my life?” “How did Jesus grace my life during Lent with forgiveness, healing, recovery, Easter, and new life?”

May your recollections grace you with a heightened awareness that Jesus is indeed risen, alive and at work in your life. It is no wonder that Christians, aware of the faith, love and goodness that Jesus has brought to life in them, proclaim ALLELUIA over and over again throughout these 50 days.

1 st Holy Communion This weekend, 84 children in our Parish

received their first Holy Communion. May the love, joy, and faith that are so alive

within our children and their families at this time continue to grow and remain healthy and alive within them. May they always remain in communion with Jesus who will nourish, strengthen and energize a spirit of faith, hope, and love in them.

I am most grateful to all who helped prepare our children for their 1st Communion. I am grateful for the parents, guardians, teachers and catechists Mrs. Milligan, Ms. Markowski, Mrs. Carroll, and Mrs. Clark. Thank you, Mrs. Leonetti, for enabling our children to sing with such joy and love.

Eucharistic Ministers – Evening of ReflectionOn Thursday evening (May 8th) at 7:00 PM,

in the Spirituality Center, there will be an evening of reflection for Eucharistic Ministers. All are invited. During this Easter season of Mystagogy, let us reflect on how and why our Risen Lord is present in the Eucharist. Let us also reflect on the ministry entrusted to us as we serve our worshipping community, the homebound, the residents at Delaware Valley Veterans Home and the patients at ARIA Hospital. May our reverence and rituals express our reverence and devotion for the Eucharistic presence of Jesus.

Financial Concerns

Our Finance Committee, Business Manager, and I continue to focus and review this fiscal year’s operating costs as well as the budget for next year. As of April 23rd, the projected deficit for the current year is $97,142. We need our Race for Education, Carnival, and Baseball Mania to be successful fundraisers. I thank all for the work they are doing to make them so. Increase giving is needed in our Sunday collections. Our inactive and non contributing parishioners need to know that their presence and financial support are wanted and needed.

The Finance Committee continues its work on balancing the budget for next year by cutting costs and considering ways to generate more income. Suggestions and comments on how to do this are most welcome. Please submit them in writing to the Finance Council.

Wedding Anniversaries

Invitations have been sent to married couples who are celebrating 65, 60, 55, 50, 25, years of marriage in 2014 to attend our annual Wedding Anniversary Mass and Breakfast on Sunday, May 18th. If you are celebrating one of these significant wedding anniversaries in 2014 and you did not receive an invitation, please call the Parish Center so we can update our records and send you an invitation.

Art Display – Saint Anselm School StudentsOn Wednesday evening, May 7th, at our

Home and School meeting the art work of our school students will be displayed. All are welcome.

Ms. Bilotta, our Art Teacher, enables our students to be so creative and artistic. I am always fascinated with their work.

Mother’s Day Mass IntentionsAll Masses on Mother’s Day will be offered

for our mothers, living and deceased. On the tables with the bulletins, there are cards and envelopes for you to enroll your mother. Please use a large envelope for Mothers who are living and a small envelope for Mothers who are deceased. Sellers Needed – Baseball Mania

Sellers are needed for our Baseball Mania. For every 5 tickets a seller sells, the seller earns a chance to win a $150 sellers prize. For every 250 tickets sold by sellers, there will be a $150 sellers’ prize. For example, when sellers sell 500 tickets, there will be two $150 sellers’ prizes; when sellers sell 750 tickets, there will be three $150 sellers, prizes. Sellers will be eligible for each prize offered.

Vincentian Message…

In this Sunday’s Gospel, as we hear the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we also come to know that our daily reaching out to our neighbor is our daily walk with the risen Christ; we recognize him in others.

Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul will show that you are indeed walking with Jesus and recognizing him in the poor and suffering.

BASEBALL ManiaSaint Anselm Parish

We are conducting an exciting fundraiser based on Major League Baseball to benefit Saint Anselm Parish. Baseball Mania is a unique sweepstakes. Each card has an equal chance to win based on the number of runs scored by the baseball teams that are randomly assigned to the card. Each card has a new chance to win for 15 weeks of the MLB season.

Buy 1 card for $20 and play 15 weeks of the MLB season, beginning June 9, 2014 through September 28, 2014. Game cards contain 3 random teams for each of the 15 weeks (you get 3 new teams each week). To play the game, participants simply add up the runs scored by their 3 teams during the week. Every week, the 10 highest scoring game cards, and the 4 lowest scoring game cards all win prizes. No two cards have the same 3 teams in any given week. The total number of runs scored by all your teams that week determines the value of your card. Each card has a minimum 1 in 19.6 chance to win a prize during the season. For more details, please visit the Baseball Mania website at www.charitymania.com.

Weekly and Grand Prizes are based on the sum of all runs scored by the teams on the card. Prizes are awarded weekly and at the end of the season to the cards whose teams score the most and lowest total runs.
