Anton and Mary’s Story
Mary worked alongside her husband Anton on the farm, in Krk Yugoslavia, while raising their four sons. Anton’s two Uncles, Anton and Josip, had already immigrated to the United States, and spoke highly about all of the great things that America had to offer.
War had broken out in Europe and Anton wanted to move his family to a better and safe place. Anton wanted to move his family to America, and pursue his own American dream.
In 1938, Anton immigrated to America by boat, leaving Mary and their four sons on the farm. Mary had help from her in-laws Nikola and Marija, while Anton was in America making a living, and saving money. Anton was going to send for them when he had a suitable home in America. Upon arriving in America, Anton lived with his Uncle Anton in Astoria, New York.
Anton first started working for the New York City Sanitation Department, and then worked on the waterfront as a long shore man on Pier 40, in New York City. Over the next few years, Anton would send money and packages back to his family on the farm in Yugoslavia. Certain items were hard to get in Yugoslavia at the time, due to the war, so Anton sent things they needed.
Though the family was to rejoin immediately, Mary and her sons were not permitted to leave Yugoslavia at that time due to the war. In September of 1948, Anton paid an armed escort to help his family escape, and take his family to Trieste, Italy. It was fifty miles to Trieste. It took three days, and they only traveled by night, and on foot. At that time, it was very dangerous to try to leave because the country didn’t want any boys or men leaving the country.
Upon arriving in Italy, they had to file their travel papers to come to America. While they waited in Italy, they stayed in a refugee camp for three months. When all the papers were ready, they took a plane to America and met Anton.
When the family reunited, Anton and Mary made a home for their family in Astoria, New York. In 1955, Anton was able to buy a house on 33rd street in Astoria. As they became more successful, they bought a house in Franklin Square, New York, and continued raising their family.
As of today November 5, 2008, Anton and Mary’s children live on Long Island, and are raising families of their own. They are so thankful that their father pursued his dream of coming to America.

The entire Kirincic family gets together and spends Christmas Eve by Uncle Joe an Aunt Rosalie’s house. Great Grandma Mary Kirincic moved in with Uncle Joe and Aunt Rosalie after Great Grandpa Anton passed away, so Christmas Eve by Uncle Joe’s was the best place. Uncle Joe an Aunt Rosalie
always made Christmas Eve special. There was always plenty of food, cooked and brought over by various family members. There was especially plenty of dessert. Everyone loved Maryellen’s cookies, Elaine’s famous chocolate dessert, and Bob’s cheesecake and bread pudding. Aunt Iva’s Calamari and Naomi’s rice and beans were always a hit. Even after Great Grandma Mary passed away, Uncle Joe and Aunt Rosalie carried on the tradition and had Christmas Eve. The family comes together and catches up with each other. It’s especially fun for the grandchildren because Santa Claus makes a stop at the Kirincic house, and delivers some gifts. Thank you Uncle Joe and Aunt Rosalie for being so generous and opening up your home and make Christmas a special time for the family.
