Class Objective:

Write a postcard about your vacation.

Warm-up: Have Ss brainstorm on the countries they have known so far due to the use of the NEXT

STOP book series. Tell them that today we are traveling. Do a grouping technique telling students

that we are in an airplane that is about to crash so in order to survive we are going to jump in groups

of # students (according to the number of students in class) in the country they want to visit. Tell them

to agree only on one country.

Ask students to name some of the activities they can do in those countries and write the example

on the board in the gerund form. Tell them that now we are going to do some listening.

A. Travelling. (Pre – Listening) In pairs, students are given pieces of paper with words written on

them: staying raining shining, waiting, taking pictures, lying, enjoying, snowing, they are to infer what

they mean.

(While): The teacher plays the audio from the postcard on page 28 (with books closed); every time

pairs hear the word they were assigned they have to jump; play a second time for Ss to organize the

words in the order they are mentioned.

When they have done so, play again for them to take notes and write a short paragraph telling what

happens in the audio text. After everybody has shared their ideas have them compare their ideas to

the postcard in the Student’s book.

(Post) Have them work in groups of three and ask them to take their cell-phones out. They will select

one place to go on vacation; then they are going to take pictures of themselves simulating they're

doing different activities in that place.

“We’re back in Cali! Let’s talk about what you did!”

B. Reporting about Vacation. (Pre) Present the structure of past continuous by giving examples of

what you were doing yesterday at specific times. "AT 9 o'clock, I was working. And you?" Another

student will answer and will ask the same question and so on until everybody has participated.

Then, have each group from the previous activity select a representative and have these ones go to

other groups and tell how their vacation was. They're to use the past continuous when telling their

experience. When they come back to their original groups, their classmates will tell them about the

vacations they heard. They can take notes to make of this exercise more productive).

(While) Give each student a fake plane ticket and have them complete it thinking of a nice destination

they would like to go to on vacation. Then, play some relaxing background music and ask Ss to close

their eyes. Start narrating what their vacation in the country they chose could be like. We recommend

using open guided statements, as follows:

“Imagine you get to your destination. Imagine you wanna go somewhere interesting in that city, where

would that be? And think of the hotel! Think of the kind of hotel you’d like to stay in. And imagine

you’re hungry… What would you like to eat in there?”

Then present the image from page 28: a postcard. Ask students what a postcard is for and then build

a definition together. Subsequently, analyze the parts of it:

Greeting: brainstorm on different ways to start writing to a person they know or love, like

“Dear…”, “Hello, _____!! How are you?!”

Body

Closure: brainstorm on different ways to end the postcard, e.g. “Love you a lot, _______”

“Hope you’re okay”

Addressee

Mailing Address

City And State

Postal Code

Country

(Post) Give students a piece of paper and magazines, scissors and glue. They are to look for images

in the magazines that illustrate the activities they did during their trip and paste them on one side of

the paper. When done, have them think and write in their notebooks who they’re going to write to,

which if the activities they imagined are worth telling about, and the contact information of their

addressee. Ss will start writing a postcard on the other side telling a relative about their vacation.

Wrap-up: Have Ss exchange postcards. They will impersonate the addressee of the postcard they

get and will reply by asking questions; then exchange again and have Students answer the questions

they were asked by their relatives. Once they are done, have some volunteers share their production

and the conversation they had with their relatives.

Activity: Reporting about Vacation

This time the tool to be used by Ss to design a postcard narrating what their

vacation was like is one integrated to the Windows operative systems: the Paint basic designing program. Once Ss have finished imagining what their vacation was

like with the plane ticket activity and after they have socialized their ideas, here is

what must be done in order to create a postcard using Paint:

1. First of all Ss have to start Paint. They will click on the Windows Inicio (Start) button, then on the menu Accesorios (Accessories), and finally on

Paint. 2. Once the program starts running Ss will be provided with a “canvas” and a

tool bar on the upper part of the window. Before the class, make sure you

get acquainted with these functions and how to use them, so you can help

your Ss shall they need your assistance.

3. Since the final text will be presented as a postcard, the canvas must be

modified to look like one. First, zoom out from the canvas by reducing the

zoom to 50%. Click the zoom out button on the lower right corner of the

window ( ).

4. Now Ss will rotate the canvas 90° for it to be vertically placed. Ss will press

the button Girar (Rotate) from the tool bar and then on Girar 90° grados a la derecha (Rotate 90° to the right). Finally, Ss will now divide the canvas in

two parts by drawing a horizontal line in the middle of the canvas. Remind

Ss that one of those parts will contain images and the other one the

message (no matter if the first one is on the upper part or the lower one and

vice versa).

5. Ss will now select a background color for their postcards. When they have

decided on such color by clicking on it on the color palette in the tool bar,

they will click on the Relleno (Fill with color ). Ss will click on the

sections to be filled with the selected color.

6. Now Ss are free to start designing whether the visual part of their postcards

or their messages. For the visual part, tell Ss to use an internet browser to

look for images that depict the activities they imagined themselves doing

during their trips. When they found them, they’ll right-click on them and then

click on the Copiar Imagen (Copy image) option. Later on Paint they will

click the Pegar (Paste) button, which is located on the upper left part of the

window. When pasted, Ss will be able to modify its size and location in the

postcard.

7. When the visual part of the postcard is ready, on the other part Ss will now

paste a small image representing the country or city they visited as if it were

a stamp.

8. Now it’s time to insert the message. Ss will introduce text by clicking on the

Texto (Text ) button, which will allow them to create a chart where text

will be introduced. Let Ss now start writing their messages taking into

account the elements previously brainstormed. Make sure Ss leave some

space to insert another text chart in which information about the addressee’s

information.

9. Now, have Ss peer-assess by exchanging seats and responding to these

guidelines:

Does your classmate’s postcard contain enough images that describe his or

her vacation?

Is your classmate using the appropriate expressions and vocabulary to

describe what he or she was doing in a specific time in the past?

Do you think this postcard conveys an interesting message for the reader

and the descriptions of the activities are complete?

Ss will make the necessary comments on a Word document on the same

computer for their classmates to read it when they come back. .

10.Ss will now include the addressee’s information.

When done, Ss will click on the Menú (Menu ) button, then on the Guardar (Save), and make sure the postcard is saved on the Escritorio (Desk). Ss must

name it for evaluation (we suggest again given a family names). Get Ss to send it

to you. Respond to their texts through your e-mail too.
