Sustainability of Public Land
Global
-Many Wilderness areas are being used to the point that they are flooded with visitors who create traffic on nearby roads, disturb wildlife, and leave behind massive amounts of garbage.
-Some areas are also threatened by local development such as, logging, oil drilling/refining, air pollution, construction, and off-road vehicle use.
Local
Greystone Nature Preserve:The Greystone nature preserve is doing it’s part through the adopt a highway program. volunteers help maintain a 2 mile stretch of Bear Lake Road outside of the preserve. The College LodgeThe college lodge provides a sustainable haven of nature that caters to the needs of its users. There are many attractions as well as skill building courses
that utilize the surrounding nature
What can we do?
-Following regulations regarding ORV use on public land can reduce conflicts among different demographics of users and provide them all with a satisfactory experience. -If campers and hikers follow Bureau of Land Management land use guidelines this will also reduce damage to public land and help maintain campsites.
- Some of these guidelines are camping only at previously used sites if possible, staying on existing trails, and not chopping live trees for fires.
