Sue and Jim Waddington

In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven and Tom ThomsonSue and Jim have been on a quest to locate the places that inspired the Group of Seven painters and Tom Thomson. They particularly like to search for sites that can only be reached by canoe and on foot. The talk will compare photographs of some of the 600 painting sites they have found with the corresponding artwork. They will discuss how they find the painting sites and what they have learned about the painters.

Sue is retired nurse. She is also an artist - a traditional rug hooker. Her rug hooking designs have won awards in the Burlington Art Centre and from the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild. In 1977 she was making a rug hooking adapted from A.Y. Jackson’s painting “Hills, Killarney, Ontario (Nellie Lake).” During a canoe trip in Killarney Provincial Park, Sue and Jim paddled to Nellie Lake and were surprised to find that they could locate the exact spot where Jackson had sat when he did the painting. After this initial success, they have continued to search for other painting locations. Since the artists did not keep detailed records of where they worked, each painting represents a puzzle to be solved.

CFUW PERTH & DISTRICT 2016-2017 MONTHLY MEETING DETAILS ALL MEETINGS START AT 6:30PM AND HELD AT THE CANADIAN LEGION,

26 BECKWITH EAST, PERTH, ONFor each of the about 600 places that they have located, they have recorded what the view looks like now and have compared it with the artist’s impression of the same scene.

Jim is a retired physics professor from McMaster University who likes maps and the sport of orienteering. In 2003, he received the McMaster University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has no artistic talent at all.

In their talks Sue and Jim show their photographs alongside art from the beautiful La Cloche hills of Killarney Provincial Park, from Bon Echo Provincial Park, the Georgian Bay islands, the Yukon and Nunavut.

Their book details their search for the sites that inspired the Group of Seven Painters. Many of the 550 painting sites that they have found are illustrated alongside the corresponding artwork. It is published jointly by the Art Gallery of Sudbury and Goose Lane Editions. A description of the book may be found at http://tinyurl.com/nuac2lu. This image of the book cover may be downloaded from http://www.gooselane.com/media/1314.jpg

They have also begun to describe our search for these special places on a Facebook page. You might “like’ it at www.facebook.com/FootstepsGroup7

All of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to the Art Gallery of Sudbury.

February 6 Dr. Shelley Ball, biologist, educator, photographer and environmental storyteller

Homeward Bound Women in Science Leadership Expedition to Antarctica

Westport’s Dr. Shelley Ball - a biologist, photographer, educator and storyteller - will share photos and stories of her recent experience on the Homeward Bound Women In Science Leadership Expedition to Antarctica. In December 2016, the largest-ever all female expedition to Antarctica boarded their ship, headed for the frozen continent. They were seventy-six women with science backgrounds, from around the world, on a mission  to increase the influence and impact of women in science, women who will influence policy and decision making in ways that will lead to a more sustainable future for our planet . Amidst the stunning backdrop of Antarctica, the women spent 20 days on a ship exploring the Antarctic Peninsula, learning about climate change, and antarctic science, all while undergoing leadership development and strategy training as a means of enhancing their own leadership capabilities. This was the inaugural expedition of a 10 year global initiative to aimed at providing transformative leadership development for 1,000 women in science. Come and learn about women’s leadership, women in science and Antarctica.

March 6

March 20

Anita Payne

---------------------

Susan Samila

The first meeting is on March 6 to discuss the CFUW national and provincial resolutions.

CFUW resolutions are important because they are how our organization encourages our governments to implement policies that benefit all citizens.

The Resolutions Meeting will start with pizza, salad and dessert for $5. There will be an alternative for people who do not eat pizza. Please let Anita know by February 28 if you plan to attend and if you have specific food needs.

There are two resolutions this year, with the possibility of us also crafting an emergency resolution regarding the Canada – USA  safe third country agreement.

Discussion leaders should be familiar with the topic of the resolution but you don't have to be an expert. Please read over the resolutions and background information and let Anita know if you would like to lead the discussion of Resolution 1, safe drinking water and sanitation on First Nations Reserves, or Resolution 2, universal pharmacare.

Seniors' Cohousing Initiatives

The Perplexing word “Cohousing”: What is it ! And Why are Seniors attracted to it?

CFUW PERTH & DISTRICT 2016-2017 MONTHLY MEETING DETAILS ALL MEETINGS START AT 6:30PM AND HELD AT THE CANADIAN LEGION,

26 BECKWITH EAST, PERTH, ON

Cohousing is a growing phenomenon in Europe and the United States.   And it is slowly developing in Canada.   In B.C. there are currently over 21 well-established cohousing communities, ranging from urban to agricultural, from seniors to mixed generation, with dwellings from modest apartments to rather elegant dwellings overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The word “cohousing” may sound like communal living, but it is not !

What are Cohousing’s key features?

A grouping of homes or apartments developed and managed by the residents

Fully private, independent but most often smaller than average homes. Homes and site designed to encourage interest and mutuality among

neighbours, to create a sense and experience of community Typically built with sustainability and energy efficiency concerns

Seniors Cohousing, based on a positive and realistic appreciation of aging, is opportunity for

Living independently but in proximity to truly supportive neighbours Being able to participate in the design, development & management of

the place they live in According to individual preference, enjoying social and cultural

gatherings, and weekly dinners in an attractive common area

CFUW PERTH & DISTRICT 2016-2017 MONTHLY MEETING DETAILS ALL MEETINGS START AT 6:30PM AND HELD AT THE CANADIAN LEGION,

26 BECKWITH EAST, PERTH, ON Living with less responsibility for the upkeep of a traditional single-family

home Experiencing less isolation, greater sense of security and safety Knowing that you are important to others, and experiencing how

important others are to you. Continuing to be simulated, grow as thoughtful, caring and fun-loving

human beings Demonstrating a way of living which is an answer to individual, social

and environmental challenges of our time

A 12 Unit cohousing project within walking distance of downtown is being planned for Perth ! Susan Samila and some of the members of the Perth Cohousing Initiative will share their stories, intentions, as well as invite the audience to share their ideas and concerns. Photographs will illustrate the varied design possibilities of such a project.

Bio:

Always interested in the lives and welfare of seniors, Susan Samila is now a senior herself. As a relatively young social worker she was concerned about the security, the well-being, the stimulation and the overall quality of life of seniors living in large cities. Thirty years ago this concern led to the co-founding a seniors’ housing project in Vaughan, north of Toronto, which within a year of its opening was recognised nationally by the CMHC for its Innovations. Cohousing, a later development which began in Denmark, is even more effective at meeting seniors’ desire for a continuing, engaged personal and social life. Since moving to Perth 15 years ago, Susan has seen over and over again local people’s amazing energy and initiative in artistic, environmental and social activities here. She sees Perth Cohousing as just one more way that Perthites are showing how forward-thinking and dynamic they are !
