On Thursday, March 1, 2012 we attended the Battle of the Classes. It was an action-filled event that we think everyone who watched enjoyed. All of the teams worked equally hard, throughout the whole competition. During spirit week, the winning results were teachers first, eighth grade second, sixth grade third, and seventh grade last.

The sixth grade came marching out proudly in a sea of red, shouting their chant and showing off their colorful and decorated poster. They were confident that they were going to win. The seventh graders had a very colorful banner and a creative chant. Next, the eighth grade came running out. On their banner, they had a picture of flaming hot fire, superman in his heroic blue, red, and yellow costume, and a wonderful logo that said, “It’s the end of the world and we eighth graders are going out with a BANG!!!” Then, all the teachers made their way out onto the gym floor with their colorful and eye catching banner. In this event, the eighth grade came in first, the sixth second, the seventh third, and the teachers last. Then the real competition started. Everyone was off to a great start! The first contest was a game of sit down volleyball. The first game was the teachers vs. sixth graders. The game of eighth grade vs. seventh was also going on at the same time. The sixth grade lost 6-16. The eighth grade, however had won. Next was twister. The teachers were disqualified because someone reported that one of the teachers had a knee on the ground. Next, the seventh graders went tumbling down. Shortly after that, the sixth graders came plummeting down too. So the remainders were the eighth graders. They got in at first, the sixth grade came in second, and the seventh grade came in third. After that was the sixth grade dance. The dance turned out to be a phenomenon with only a few mistakes. Then there was another round of sit down volleyball with the sixth grade vs. the seventh grade, and the eighth grade vs. teachers. The sixth grade was really close to winning, but lost 16-17, and again, the eighth graders gained victory over the teachers. As a total, the sixth grade ‘sit- down’ volleyball ended up in last place, the seventh graders came in third, the teachers came in second, and the eighth graders came in first. The next was the pie eating competition. Many of us were waiting for this. The contestants had their hands tied behind their back and stuffed their faces into the pie. During this contest, the sixth grade representative backed out! In this event the teachers came in first, regaining some of the points they had lost, the eighth grade came second, and the seventh came in last. Next, there was a competition called ‘horsing around.’ In the end, the teachers came in last, sixth grade ended up third, the seventh graders came in second, gaining twenty points, and the eighth grade came in first, again. The next competition was similar, except they were hopping around in a potato sack from one cone to the other. This was called ‘Hop Potato’. The teachers ended up coming in last; although the sixth grade tried their hardest, they ended up placing third, the seventh grade, second and the eighth grade first. Next contest was ‘Tug o’ War.’ The first round was sixth grade vs. seventh grade. The seventh graders lost and the sixth graders won! But when the sixth grade went against the eighth grade, they lost. They also had the eighth grade vs. the teachers. The last round was eighth grade vs. sixth grade. The eighth grade won that competition with a breeze. Over all, the teachers came in last, the seventh came in third, the sixth came in second, and the eighth came in first, as usual. The next competition was quite interesting. You had a partner, you had to push that partner down to the chair, pop the balloon that is set on the chair, switch positions, and the other person pushes the other back. The sixth grade ended up last, the teachers came in third, the seventh came in second, and the eighth came in first again. The next competition involved throwing a balloon on top of a needle that was on a helmet that someone was wearing, and popping it. Even though sixth grade tried hard, they

still ended up in last place. The teachers were third, the eighth graders were second, and the seventh graders were first, winning thirty points. The second to last competition was called Squirm Chains. It involved a chain of people connected with one hand under their leg, and reaching out to the other person’s hand, and walk down to the cone and around. Sadly, the seventh graders and the teachers were disqualified because they let go of a partner’s hands. So the eighth graders came in first, and the sixth graders came in second. The last competition was the relay. It the first part of the relay, you had to shoot down three cups out of five cups on a wooden platform with a Nerf gun. Then the next two people had to blow a piece of cotton with a straw to the red line. When they were finished with that, the next two people had to do the wheel barrow to the white line on the other side. When they got there, one person had to put every single item on in the crate next to them (a pair of fins, a cape, a pair of swimming goggles, and a pair of boxing gloves), and try to shoot three baskets. The sixth grade ended up last, the seventh grade third, the teachers second, and the eighth grade, again, came in first. This year, it happened to be the eighth graders who were crowned as champions of 2012. Congratulations eighth graders! Although the teachers came in second, we thought that they showed the most team spirit. The seventh graders came in third, but they tried really hard. The sixth graders came in last, but this was only their first year in participating in the BOTC event. Good luck to the teachers, seventh grade, and sixth grade next year.

Run For Your Life! Peter Wu In a recent episode in The Discovery Channel there was a talk about the 2012 Mayan Apocalypse, the supposed end of the world. But one must wonder, exactly how are we going to die, if we’re even going to die at all? For those who have watched the movie 2012, it is about the world ending by mutated “neutrinos” which make tectonic plates smash together, and then massive volcanoes begin. The governments try to build arks, which will protect the people that can pay, and the rest are left to die.Some claim that a somewhat mutated planet, hypothetically named planet X will either have so much of a gravitational effect that it could trigger planetary- killing solar flares, and would be able to knock Earth on a different rotation pattern. But luckily, such a planet that would have such an effect does not exist. If it did, it would’ve been spotted a long time ago.Others have said that a super volcanic blast will rip through the Earth, and will have enough energy to alter the course of the planet itself. But if that were to really happen, the energy needed to cause such an explosion would instantly vaporize us before the flaming meteors and such would even reach us. The other idea was coming from a scientist called Charles Hapgood, who believed that the Earth had indeed did this many times before. His idea came from the fact that under the earth, there is a layer of very soft rock. And when they smash together, earthquakes are formed. He believed that a large enough imbalance could make the entire crust, which is the part we live on sliding all over the place. It would be very undesirable to be on the sliding crust at that time. Tidal waves would be formed, as would massive volcanoes. This has gotten a couple of apocalyptic believing, catastrophic- phobic fanatics already preparing for the worst. April Showers Bring May Flowers Melissa Yang The spring season is here, and so are the rainy days, and flowers! (Gardening can be manly, to all those boys out there that are currently saying “eww”) Spring can bring the common tulips, daffodils, dandelions, and much more, but everyone knows about those. I want to introduce to you all a variety of interesting spring blossoms!Crocus- a genus in the iris family. This lavender, white, and yellow flower has 80 different species, and it grows to about 20 cm high. Although it is very attractive, this most of the species of this plant are poisonous, even though it some can be used to treat rheumatism. Crocus sativa (Saffron) was a common source of yellow dye in the Roman times and is still used for medicinal purposes, dye, and also a food coloring today. In a book called The Poetry of Flowers, as the symbol of “Smiles”, on page 212 Miss H. F. Gould beautifully writes this poem: “Down in my solitude under the snow,Where nothing cheering can reach me;Here, without light to see how to grow,I’ll trust to nature to teach me.

This year’s spring came early on March 20, 2012 with the suddenly warm weather. But the question is… why? The weather is claimed to be the effect of a “blocking pattern” over the country. The heat is actually causing a lot of trouble: it is thought to be causing Michigan’s tornado outbreak, early thunderstorms, wreaking havoc with some wildlife-early flowers are victims of late frost, giving the birds and insects less to eat, weakening the food chain, and the lack of snow is going to cause not as much floods, but great droughts. How to be Smart Nithish Selvaraj Have your grades suffered in the past marking periods? And no matter how much you study you just can’t do it? Well, if that’s the case, please continue to read. The best method to becoming smart is to think that you are smart. Yes, it may sound a little stupid, but it has been tested on kids of all races. In a college, a group of students were asked to take a test. Afterwards, they convinced those students that they were smart enough to do anything! So, these people gave the test again to the students after their ‘pep talk’ and their findings were that the average score on the test was higher than before! If that doesn’t work, you can always try one of these methods:

Tutors

Just ask someone, like your parents or friends, if they could help you study a certain subject. If that doesn’t work, try going to a tutoring company, such as Sylvan or Kumon.

After-School Help

Ask a teacher for some help in some area of study. They can give you a pass, so you can visit them when you have help. Also, you can sign up for a club, like Ms. Jasper’s Math Club to help.

So, you may be saying, “Well, I can’t do it.” YES, YOU CAN! Don’t be so down on yourself. Others can try to bring you down, but it only matters if you bring yourself down. Just try and think that you are so smart that… that… that you can move things with your mind! Just keep your head in the game, fellow WWMS-ers!

The Lorax Movie Review Meghna Srinivasan

Have you read the book The Lorax by Dr. Seuss? Well this new movie based on excellent children’s book starts off with love. An 11 year old boy, Ted falls in love with Audrey, a playful girl. He wants to impress her in some way. One day, he pretended to “accidentally” drop his plane in her yard. She then explains to him how she has been wanting to see these “real” trees. She wants to feel a tuft of a truffulla tree. His grandma who has seen one tells him to go see the Once-ler who knows the story of how these trees disappeared. He goes in search of this “Once-ler.” As you know, there is always a villain involved in removing the main character’s ideas. In this story, it is the famous Mr. O’hare. Trees make their own oxygen and Mr. O’hare, here, creates air and sells it for money. Towards the end, The Once-ler begins to trust Ted and finally gives him a seed of the very last truffulla tree. Ted plants it and The forest once again returns. All the animals including the Lorax return to stay. The moral to this inspiring movie is that instead of worrying about the things you can’t change, try to worry about the things you can change. I think that if we all put forth effort into making our world a better place, we can accomplish it. After all anyone can make a difference. So let’s start fresh and bring ourselves one step closer to making our world a better place!

new to town.” Let me introduce you to Jason.

Jason finds himself, sleeping on a bus, on his way to find out who he really was. All of his memories have been erased but his so-called friends, Piper and Leo, tell him that they’ve known each for six months maybe even longer. But, the very same day a well-trained warrior rescues them and takes them to a safe place called, Camp Half-Blood. This is where Jason finds very important clues from his past memories (which have been erased). The campers, too, learn secrets about the new arrivers. All of these secrets and memories lead to find a new quest for Jason and his friends to solve. Along the way help comes and Jason also learns more about his family members. Knowing the second youngest child of his family members knocks Jason off of his feet. Taking all the pain he could bear, Jason leads his friends to good news and bad news. Now I could say no more because YOU have to read for yourself to find out the shocking most amazing story of “The Lost Hero.”

*Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Book Review

(1st book in the Harry Potter series)

Harry Potter had never imagined himself to be special. With the Dursleys around, he wasn't even regarded as someone. But that all changed when Harry gets a letter to go to Hogwarts because he is a wizard, which completely bewilders him. At Hogwarts, Harry does some things he never did before; wield a magic wand, fly on a broomstick, make different concoctions, and find enemies (besides Dudley). Harry also isn't put at ease when everyone in the school is staring at him while he tries to get to his classes. He also starts to unravel some of his mysterious past, something about You-know-who and his parents. Something is being guarded in Hogwarts, and Harry and his two new best friends, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger, believe that You-know-who is after the guarded item. Together, they set off in an amazing adventure within the school, something that solves a mystery... but brings back another.

I personally think this book is amazing and will make an excellent read for children in middle school who enjoy action and adventure. However, this book may not be suitable for young children because they may get frightened of the situations and people that are in this book. But, going back on track, if you like a good mystery and thriller, this is definitely a book you should read.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Book Review (7th book in the Harry Potter series)

Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger have a difficult year in front of them. Last year (with the help of Professor Dumbledore), they discovered that the way to kill Voldemort (aka You-know-who), is to destroy all of his horcruxes, which contain a piece of his soul in it. As they leave their friends and family behind, they set off on an adventure, which is both dangerous and mysterious. Voldemort is after the Elder Wand, which is said to be the most powerful wand of all. Harry, Ron, and Hermione need to find the wand before Voldemort. When they are collecting the different items, a feud separates the trio. After some time, they reunite, which put everything back on track. When they need to find the last few horcruxes, they go back to the place that they always trusted most: Hogwarts. At Hogwarts, all of their friends insist on helping them and agree to defend the school from Voldemort's gang of helpers: the Death Eaters. As Voldemort and his army barge in, the students and staff bravely defend their school, which buys time for Harry, Ron, and Hermione to try and find the last few horcruxes. Will Harry destroy all of the horcruxes? Will he finally defeat Voldemort and bring peace to the Wizarding World? Will evil be gone forever?

I think that this book is an excellent final sequel to the amazing series. J.K. Rowling certainly won’t disappoint her fans with this astounding book. Again, this book may not be appropriate for young children, who may get frightened of the things and people in the book. But overall, this was a flabbergasting book that really impressed me and won’t disenchant anyone that stumbles upon it.

But now, with the computer, TV, the desk job, and others, our time sitting down has been increased to up to an average of 9.3 hours a day. That’s about 55% of the time spent awake. Those who sit 3 hours or more a day are 64% more likely to die from heart disease. Our bodies weren’t built for that, and now it’s taking its toll. You might want to stand up for this. Sitting 6 or more hours a day makes you 40% likelier to die within 15 years than someone who sits less than three hours. Even if you exercise.

When one steps into “Eataly”, they will at once be surprised at two ambiances blending together in perfect harmony; the restaurant and the marketplace synchronized together. In the market, a buyer, can buy various foodstuffs, including poultry, fresh pastas, cheeses, sweets, and (for adults) a variety of delicious wines including Baladin, Lurisia, and Achillea. Also in the market, “foodies” can sample various delicacies and snack a little.After that, they can go into “Eataly”’s excellent restaurants and sit down to an authentic Italian meal. Though “Eataly” is quite busy, it can still repel crowds because of the long lines that people have to wait in. Even a table can be hard to obtain here because this place does not accept reservations! This is one of the reasons why “Eataly” is a bit off-turning to crowds. But for the people that do have the patience to stay and wait do get to eat the fruits of their labors…and what fruits! In “Eataly”, the Neapolitan pies are made by real Neapolitans and certain pieces of the gold tiled oven are brought from Naples. Plus, the pizzas are made Mario Batali style. For those of you that don’t know who he is, Mario Batali is one of the most successful chefs in the world and holds one of the esteemed titles of Iron chef and makes frequent appearances on ‘Food Network’s’ Iron Chef America.

Eataly is rated from 3 ½ to 4 stars by critics and is a restaurant and market to please. But only those who wish to be pleased.

Out of all the Grammy awards of 2012 there was one that was most memorable. Whitney Houston's death .The singer was 48 years old. A cause of death was not immediately known. Jennifer Hudson was scheduled to perform Houston's biggest hit, a cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," at the Grammy’s as a tribute to the late star. As you can see the 2012 Grammy awards will remain within all the American voices forever.

The World Trade Center is a building that provides a good image in our mind. However, that building was destroyed on September 11, 2001 when two commercial jetliners that were hijacked by stupid terrorists crashed into the Twin Towers. After the tragic loss in New York City, architects have been working 24/7 to get a new building, and builders are trying their very best to construct the 105 story super tall skyscraper. The new WTC looks very different than the old building; it is a different color, height, and shape. So it looks like New Yorkers are working extremely hard to get the skyscraper done.

New Yorkers just don’t want the building for tourism; they need it for office purposes. The World Trade Center is the premier office building in NYC, many people get jobs there. One World Trade Center is not the only building being built. It is being accompanied by 5 other

buildings: Two WTC, Three WTC, four WTC, five WTC, and seven WTC. Every building is under construction except seven WTC. Seven WTC opened on May 23, 2006, almost five years after the attack of 9/11.

The reason the twin towers were built because they represented America’s might in trade and development. That’s why Al-Qaeda brought it down. These new buildings are being built because they are supposed to reiterate that America’s growth and development has not been stunted due to a cowardly attack. The larger message is that “Symbols can be destroyed but not freedom or greatness.” To me, the new World Trade Center is the new temple for freedom and development. May it remain standing forever as a perpetual symbol of America’s indomitable spirit.

You might be wondering how the person who made the flower to the left of this text actually made it. Well, you will be lucky to hear that I know and I am willing to share it with you. If you look carefully at the picture, you will see that the flower is 3-D. The person who made the art below used a form of art called quilling. Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is then glued at the tip and these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns similar to ironwork. Of course after that, it is glued to the paper. The materials used were a quilling tool which

helps roll up the strips of paper, the quilling strips which get rolled up, glue to stick them to the paper, and paper. You may add any extra decoration if you like using any materials like cotton, pompoms, crayons, colored pencils, markers, stamps, stickers and more! Super Bowl XLVI Tejas V.Did everyone enjoy this year’s Super Bowl? I’m sure you did since the New York Giants

won it all in a thriller against the New England Patriots. The final score of 21-17 does not capture the sheer excitement of the game. The Patriots were trailing early until Tom Brady led his team to take a commanding 17-9 lead till well into the midway point of the 3 rd quarter. The Patriots thought they “had it in the bag,” but Eli Manning gathered his troops and made amazing

comeback to finish off New England for good. Despite the Giants lead, the game went to the wire as the Patriots had a possession and

almost pulled off a miracle win when Tom Brady threw a Hail Mary pass that Rob Gronkowski dropped. I had visions of another famous game winning drive from Brady like the 2001 Super Bowl, but this one turned out to be like the futile 2008 drive that the Patriots had against, you guessed, the New York Giants. The Patriots once again had to suffer another heartbreaking loss

as NYG got to celebrate their fourth title.The Giants had a great season, highlighted by Eli Manning becoming one of the elite

quarterbacks in the league, wide receiver Victor Cruz’s breakout season, and the Giants beating the Dallas Cowboys to win the division. I felt a little disappointed when the Giants won the Super Bowl because I’m from the Dallas Ft- Worth area and have been and am a Dallas Cowboys fan. So once again I was a bit disappointed as I wanted the Cowboys to win the Eastern Division, and the Patriots to beat the Giants in the Super Bowl. But it was not to be. While I will forever be disappointed by the Cowboys’ performance, I admire what Eli Manning has achieved.

Claude Monet Pooja Bhate Have you ever heard of Claude Monet? You probably have! Claude Monet was a very famous artist. He was born on November 14th, 1840, in Paris France. He then went to Le Havre, a French art school, and later moved to Académe Suisse when he was 19 years old. Monet was 30 years when he got married to Camille Doncieux who bore him one son, named Jean Monet.The reason why Monet is so famous is because of his wonderful paintings. His father wanted him to be in the grocery business, but Claude wanted to be an artist. He made caricatures and sold them for 10 to 20 francs each. He made about 1,700 paintings in his whole life. Critics say that his later paintings were the best, because they had impressionism. Impressionism is a style of art that uses natural methods of lighting to draw or paint. Monet, and his friends Renoir, Sisley and Bazille all invented and took part in the ‘impressionism moment’ in France. Many say that Monet’s work looked like abstract of the 20th century. His last paintings were painted in a series that depicted Giverny, his home, in different weather conditions and varying light sources. He then called this series Giverny, you can probably tell why! Sadly, Claude Monet died of lung cancer at the old age of 85 years old on December 5th, 1926

and had a very private burial, with only 50 people invited. you can still see him at the Giverny Church Cemetery.
