The Chimes Vol. XXXIX No. 6 Web Edition June 2013 Dear Friends, The arrival of summer always feels to the church staff as though we have crested a hill and don’t have to pedal quite as hard for a couple of months. There are fewer classes to teach and meetings to attend. The choirs, Church School, and Preschool take a summer break. Colleagues may be gone on vacation or sabbaticals (this year it is Kim McNeill’s and John Rogers’ turn), and more than a few church families seem to take their own summer sabbaticals from worship. In another sense, however, we don’t do less; we simply divert energy to other tasks – Vacation Church School, the Appalachia Service Project, the Montreat Worship and Music Conference, and the Youth Conference there. Our coffee hour becomes Punch on the Porch. We look toward a summer educational series, and the summer months afford us opportunities to develop longer preaching series. This summer, the focus of our preaching will be on the spiritual practices that define us as Christian (including gathering, repentance, forgiveness, prayer, work, rest, eating, thankfulness, and welcome). We will have one guest preacher this summer. The Rev. Katie Owen, Presbyterian Campus Minister at Duke University, will be in the pulpit on Sunday, June 16. Katie is an excellent preacher, and I know we will all benefit from hearing her. We have also been joined this summer by a summer pastoral intern, Katy Walters, who has just completed her second year in the Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Practical Theology dual-degree program at Columbia Theological Seminary. A native of Texas and a 2007 graduate of Austin College, Katy has extended experience in youth ministry in three different congregations and will help with youth trips to Montreat and Appalachia; she will also offer regular leadership in worship and preaching, and will help with pastoral care and education. I hope you will help us extend to Katy a warm UPC welcome. I hope we will see you regularly through the summer months, and I pray that your summer will provide you opportunities for rest, reflection and restoration. Grace and peace, Robert E. The Chimes Vol. XXXIX No. 6 Web Edition June 2013

Dear Friends,

The arrival of summer always feels to the church staff as though we have crested a hill and don’t have to pedal quite as hard for a couple of months.

I hope you will help us extend to Katy a warm UPC welcome.

I hope we will see you regularly through the summer months, and I pray that your summer will provide you opportunities for rest, reflection and restoration.

Grace and peace,

Robert E. Dunham

In May, University Presbyterian Church welcomed the following new members into the life of the church.

We Celebra te Our New Members

Aaron and Heidi Cook (Adrienne and Megan)—We wel-come the Cook family to UPC, Aaron by reaffirmation of his faith and Heidi by affirmation of her faith. Aaron and Heidi met at St. Lawrence University in NY when they were both undergraduate students. Heidi attended dental school at Tufts and is now a dentist with Piedmont Health Services, a comprehensive community health organization. Aaron is a doctoral student at UNC in the areas of biochemistry and biophysics. Aaron and Heidi have two daughters. Adrienne, age five, attends Sounds and Colors preschool and is already active in the Children’s Choir. Megan is thirteen months old and loves watching her sister sing in the choir. Heidi, Adri-enne, and Megan all received the sacrament of baptism on May 12, 2013.

It was an interesting last week as we closed out the year at PCM with a wonderful senior reception for our twenty-one graduat-ing seniors. During this time, I was also busy moving out of a house and getting ready to depart for England. After these past few weeks, I am more than ready to be walking across Hadrian’s Wall with our students as I begin my Sabbatical to renew, re-fresh, and study.

I am grateful to UPC for your generosity in allowing me this opportunity to honor the ritual of rest that God has called us to honor. I am looking forward to both the time on pilgrimage in England and Scotland with the students, as well as time in Italy to visit and learn about the culture while immersed in Paul’s epistle to the church in Rome. It is my hope that in this study and time away, I will see how the Gospel has a way of coming to life uniquely in many settings.

I will also be spending some time working on a grant proposal from the Lilly Endowment for their new Theological Exploration of Vocation for Campus Ministries Initiative 2013. It will be a great way to take a step back and look at what we have been doing in campus ministry at UNC PCM, as well as to dream of new ways to be faithful in this ministry in service to our college students and their vocational discernment.

I will look forward to coming back on August 12 and putting all engines in the water for the flurry of activities that happen at the beginning of the academic year. Again, my sincerest thanks to you for upholding the practice of rest and renewal for your professional staff. It is a real gift. See you in August. Ciao Grazie!

2012-2013 Conf i rma t ion Class

Our 2012-2013 Confirmation class was Confirmed on Sunday, May 19. This class spent this past school year studying scripture,

the history of the Church, Presbyterian polity and governance, as well as exploring their own foundation of faith.

A day-long retreat in August started the year off by encouraging youth to think about why being part of a church family is so

important. A service retreat in the winter helped our confirmands put their faith in action.

Finally, writing their Statements of Faith this spring helped them put what they believe into words. This has been an out-

standing class and these youth will be leaders here at UPC and wherever their faith journey takes them.

Adul t Educa t ion Summer Oppor tuni ty This summer, adults at University Presbyterian Church will have the opportunity to experience a different rhythm in the sched-ule of educational opportunities.

Making God’s Mission Your Mission… You Do Make a Difference!

Come learn more about the mission God invites us to join through a series of seven modules developed by the faculty at Union Presbyterian Seminary. Guided by a variety of individual UPC members and the DVD created by Union, this series explores and engages participants in a deeper understanding of the mission of the church. The series will rely heavily on the three books that guide the work of the PC(USA): The Bible, the Book of Confessions and The Book of Order.

Each topic stands alone; however, if you wish to understand the uniqueness of being a member of the PC(USA), you will not want to miss a Sunday! The classes will begin June 23 and continue through August 11 (there will be no class on July 7). Childcare will be available each Sunday morning. We hope you will join us for this special summer opportunity in adult education at UPC!

This class will be held from 9:45-10:45 a.m. in Vance Barron Hall on the following Sundays this summer:

June 23 – The Mission of God, led by Katy Walters

June 30 – The Mission of the Church, led by Katy Walters

July 7 – NO CLASS

July 14 – The Mission of the Members, led by Heather Ferguson

July 21 – The Mission of the Members in Ordered Ministries, led by Katy Walters

July 28 – A Worshipping Community, led by Katy Walters

August 4 – A Responsible Church, leader TBA

August 11 – A Serving Church, leader TBA

Members of the program staff have put together a summer reading list for our members and friends of UPC.

We Look Forward to This Year ’s

Vaca t ion Church School ! Thanks so much to everyone who will be volunteering at this summer’s vacation church

school from June 24-28. We have an incredible week planned thanks to the great leadership

of our VCS Chair, Karen Vandersea, Laura Baxley, who has been the VCS Volunteer Coor-

dinator, and all of the planning team members.

We are still in need of a few volunteers, adults and youth, during our week out at Camp

New Hope. If you would like to help by volunteering, even at the last minute, we would

love to have you! Please contact Heather Ferguson at [email protected] or Laura Baxley

at [email protected] to see how you can support our children and youth during this

year’s vacation church school.

Upcoming Class : “Discover ing the B ible” This fall, we will begin a full-year Church School class entitled “Discovering the Bible.” Written by Boyd Lien and published by Kerygma, this is a:

Basic, comprehensive introduction to the Bible as a whole. The phrase “the Bible as a whole” is used to convey a concern for more than learning about each book and its contents. It seeks to underscore an interest in seeing the inter-connections among the many party of the entire Bible, as it speaks to us of God and faith and people. Through a process of reading, reflection, discussion and creative expression you will discover people, events, and places and encounter a variety of biblical ideas. While the focus of the course is to provide an introduction to the Bible as a whole, our hope and expectation is that you will move beyond learning details about people, events, and places to new understandings and experiences of faith and life.

This class is for:

• those who have been reading the Bible for years and would like to know more;

• those who have always wanted to learn about the Bible but weren’t sure how to start;

• those who know who wrote the book of Acts; and

• those who aren’t sure if Proverbs is in the Old or the New Testament.

What you need to participate is a willingness to learn, listen and at least two hours a week, one hour for the class and another

hour for class preparation (aka, homework!).

The entire class is 30 weeks long, but we will be dividing it into two sections. You are welcome to sign up for just one section or both. In the fall (September 8 - December 22), the fifteen lessons will focus on the Old Testament. In 2014, (January 5 - April 27) the fifteen lessons will focus on the New Testament.

With occasional substitutions, I’ll be teaching and leading these Sunday mornings classes. Sign-ups will begin in July, but if you have any questions, please get in touch! I can be reached by email at [email protected] or by calling the church office at (919) 929-2102.

I look forward to taking this journey with you!

In 1991, a group of five caring women, Bonnie Davis, Shirley Marshall, Chris Nutter, Jean Nuzum and Judy Stewart, came together to help clients of the Orange County Department of Social Services (DSS) in need. They realized that there were many families in our community in desperate need of assis-tance that fell outside the range of services that DSS was able to offer.

By 1992, they had secured non-profit status for FRIENDS of the Orange County Department of Social Services. For more than twenty years, FRIENDS has been an all volunteer work-ing board committed to helping social workers with requests for their clients that range from securing water, gas and elec-tricity services to helping prevent utility shutoffs. We also pro-vide cribs for babies who are co-sleeping with siblings or par-ents, as well as providing beds for children and adults who are sleeping on the floor.

We fund a summer enrichment program for Orange County youth, some of whom have never been out of Orange County. We assist with rent payments, provide funds for emergency medicines and replace broken appliances. We are occasionally called on to completely furnish a household for women and children leaving homeless situations. We supply new back-packs full of school supplies for children in foster care and others identified by the social workers in Orange County

schools. We rescue and distribute food from the NC Food Bank, help with holiday gifts for the Orange County Toy Chest and children in foster care and assist in many other ways throughout the community.

Did you know that a person working forty hours per week at a minimum wage job, after taxes, brings home just $921 per month? You can see that after paying for rent and utilities, there is little money available for food and medicine, let alone to deal with daily living situations which can quickly lead to emergencies. FRIENDS is often the last hope for families struggling to keep their homes and children safe and secure.

Last year, we delivered more than $40,000 in emergency and nonemergency funds in support of DSS clients. More than 94 percent of the funds we raised went to direct services. We count on the support of individuals and congregations such as University Presbyterian Church to accomplish these goals. You have always been generous to FRIENDS and we thank you so much for your continued support.

If you have questions or suggestions for our organization, please contact us at FRIENDS of Orange County DSS, P.O. Box 1272 Hillsborough, NC 27278, or feel free to email us at [email protected].

Funding in the amount of $2400 was provided for FRIENDS last year in addition to $1165 collected at the Alternative Gift Market.

Orange County is fortunate to have FRIENDS.

Presbyter ian Women Spr ing Dinner Upda te Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Presbyterian Women Spring Dinner on May 14! We had a lovely evening learn-ing more about the women of our congregation through fun, fellowship and song. We would also like to thank our guest speaker, Margot Starbuck, who did a wonderful job speaking at the dinner. We can’t wait until next year!

Univers i ty Presbyter ian Preschool UPPS wrapped up another successful year, nurturing and guiding the early school lives of the preschool children of this church and the surrounding community. Highlights of our year included the hundreds of books read and explored, the many art projects carefully produced and proudly brought home and hours and hours of playing in the sand, on the play-scape and in the classrooms. We capped off our year with our oldest chil-dren spending their last school week out at Camp New Hope, where we found lots of tadpoles and sang memorable songs around the campfire.

On behalf of the UPPS teachers, I would like to thank UPC for their con-tinuing support of our program and mission!

Peace,

~ Ellen Parker, UPPS Director

The Mental Health Task Force met Sunday, May 5, to review what had been accomplished this past year and to also take a look at plans for the coming year. We have been busy and wanted to share our accomplishments with you and also solicit your input.

During January and February of 2013, we held a series of six presentations on Faith, Mental Illness and Movies. The series was planned and presented by Jay and Elinor Williams with help from Dot Cansler. Each of the sessions focused on a par-ticular type of mental illness with a focus on facts, movies re-lated to the illness and the personal story of a family member with firsthand experience with the illness and the role that their faith played in their journey. The class drew many mem-bers from UPC, as well as other people from local churches. A survey was sent out at the end of the series of classes, and the response indicated a need for additional education about men-tal illness and highlighted the need for further class participa-tion and discussion by those attending.

On Sunday evening, May 5, the task force also sponsored a special presentation for church members and PYC parents on depression and suicide. The presentation was planned by Mellicent Blythe and done by Jodi Flick, from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work. Participants enjoyed a light supper while Jodi gave an excellent presentation on “Understanding and Preventing Suicide.”

The third accomplishment of the Task force was to recruit a group to participate in the National Alliance for Mental Illness Walk on May 5 at Dorothea Dix Campus in Raleigh. Dana Greenwood and Dot Cansler were co-captains of the walk. The team raised $2800 dollars for NAMI, with a portion of the money being directed to the Orange County Chapter.

Last of all, Dana Greenwood completed a course on Family to Family which is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Dana will be teaching the Family to Family course some time during the coming year. You can learn more about what this course has to offer in terms of education and sup-port of mental illness from Dana in an article in The July edi-tion of The Chimes.

We are currently making plans for the coming year and invite your participation and/or feedback. Our goal is to raise the awareness of mental illness among the church community by providing education and support. The stigma of mental illness creates yet another hurdle for those who seek help and accep-tance. Please join our conversation by sharing your ideas, your needs and your stories.

For more information, you may contact Dot Cansler at (919) 918-3680 or [email protected] or Susan Pegg at (919) 408-0127 or [email protected].
