Driving Innovation
What is the Technology Strategy Board?
• We are the UK’s Innovation Agency• A national body set up in 2007 to invest in business
innovation• We work across business, universities and
government• We mostly come from business
– 130 people with over 1700 years of business experience
• We have a budget of over £300m/year
Driving Innovation
Context: The Digital programme
• Mission: to help innovative businesses unlock the economic potential of digital technology, by identifying and addressing systemic challenges and resolving tensions between people, processes and technology.
Driving Innovation
Our priority challenges
• Moving towards a world of pervasive digital services • Building the case for investment in emerging digital
infrastructure and platforms• Enabling new business models and opportunities in a world of
connected objects • Increasing trust and resilience in a rapidly changing, connected
world • Improving people’s lives and experiences in the digital world• Harnessing the economic value of information and content• Enabling and creating business opportunities in and across
new digital value networks and communities

THE CHALLENGE
Driving Innovation
“Internet of Things”
‘Things that have more and more information associated with them, and are beginning to sense, communicate, network and produce new information”
Driving Innovation
• Pervasive Internet• Connected Environments• Smart Places• Smart Cities• Connected Cars• Ubiquitous• Computing, Everyware • Connected World
• Physical Internet• Smart Homes• Smart Meters • Wireless Sensor Networks• Ambient Intelligence• Machine to Machine• Web of Things• The Future Internet• ............
IoT: also know as .....
Driving Innovation
The challenge
• Help the UK gain an early advantage in Internet of Things adoption, applications and services development
• Focus on the enablers of and barriers to the ecosystem of applications and services of the Internet of Things
Driving Innovation

Driving Innovation
Objectives of this competition• A broad-based learning on compelling internet of things
converged scenarios• Understanding of compelling use cases and business
opportunities • Envisage a route to an IoT marketplace of application and
services• Wide dissemination of the results of you projects• Help define the £4m demonstrator activity • Preparing organizations (funded and non-funded) for
bidding for the demonstrator activity
Driving Innovation
Competition key facts• Opens on Oct 11th• Up to £50k contracts for 4-month projects covering full
costs• Must be business-led• Contracts awarded to one company only
– Subcontractor very welcome & it’s likely you need them– Universities very welcome
• ALL projects MUST start and finish together • Funded projects must attend 3 workshops,
one of which an open showcase/workshop.• Key deliverable: project work report

SCOPE
Driving Innovation
“Internet of Things”‘Things that have more and more information associated with them, and are beginning to sense, communicate, network and produce new information”
For this competition we take a data value-chain view:from “things” through applications and services to end users
Driving Innovation
Scope
1. A data-centric IoT convergence scenario2. An in-depth study of the scenario, end-to-end3. A real/realistic context in which the applicants
will carry out the study
Driving Innovation
IoT Convergence: A definition
• Increased accessibility to data from or about ‘things’
• easy and harmonised access (across organisation, application domain or sector boundaries)
• Data and Information “value chains”
Driving Innovation
IoT Convergence scenario
• End-to-end example of convergence– Contexts (City? Buildings? Transport? Transport+ Energy?
Entertainment?)
– “Things”– Data – Data & Information value chains– Applications and Services on the top of that– End users (B & C)
Driving Innovation
Topics that projects could address• Data value chains from the “things” trough application/services to end user• Services, service design, including information flows• Disincentives (including liabilities), incentives, costs, and benefits analysis for organization to make more data
available • Business models for data, services and applications• People-centred design and value cases for users• Legal, regulatory and ethical considerations, including liabilities • Privacy, security, trust • Monetization and billing mechanisms• Integration between data sets to generate more value• Service level agreements between parties in the data/service value chain• Incentives to invest further in infrastructure (nodes, networks) based on information flows• Interoperability at the data and services layer• Coping with large quantities of data • Data/Information brokerage solutions, local hubs, gateways, including cloud based • Data usage, rights, provenance • Disintermediation between the infrastructure and the application/services developers• ..........

ELIGIBILITY & ASSESSMENT
Driving Innovation
Eligibility criteria
1. Competition specific– See gateway question
2. General criteria (see guideline for applicants)– Company or charity to lead
– Must be a legal entity & trading – Passing financial health check (See
section 4.1)
Driving Innovation
Gateway question (see: application form)• The convergence scenario
– how it is centred on data – Why you believe it is in scope for the competition.
• The data from “things”– that are being used or considered for the study.
• The actual context of the study – why it is a real or realistic context for the scenario that will be explored in
the study.
• The plan for dissemination of the outcomes of the study– Must be consistent with competition’s objectives
Driving Innovation
Overview of assessment criteria
• Realism of the scenario and the business and/or operational context of the study.
• Clarity and credibility of the project plan• The business relevance of the project and potential
learning • The relevance and potential of the outcomes to other
communities and the definition of the £4m convergence demonstrator
• Value for money

Driving Innovation
Convergence scenarios ....
• Think about where we should all get to with the IoT in a few years – Or equally what is working well now, and could be
extended elsewhere
• What data-centric scenarios can we see?• Work your way back
– What are the convergence scenarios for my organization and value network?
– What is my role? What have I got? What do I need? – What’s the “angle” of the project?
Driving Innovation
Starting points....
Users,Customers
Business models, opportunities
Technology
Driving Innovation
Springboards....• Where are the connected “things”? Where is the data from “things”? Is it
something I can control/access/work with?• Which ones have untapped potential? And what is it?• How can access to that data be made easier and more harmonized?
What are the (your?) barriers to achieving that?• Where are the blockages to data and information value chains?• What would happen as a result? Are there applications and services that
can be developed with that data? Where are the cross-sector/domain opportunities?
• Who needs them?• How could they scale up to become more than prototypes?• Where is the money?

THE PROJECTS
Driving Innovation
Key activities and deliverables
• In-depth analysis of the scenario– & deliver on the plan you got funded for– Remember it’s a contract, not a grant
• Interact with other funded projects via the workshops (and in other ways you like)
• High-level contribution to the final open closeout workshop
• A final report to the TSB for dissemination• Dissemination post-project
Driving Innovation
Final report
• Revolve around in depth answers to 5 key questions
• The work needs to be done in a real/realistic IoT scenario
• The report is a summary of the findings!• Will be used by the TSB to share the learning
and results with other projects and the wider community
Driving Innovation
Summary of the 5 key questions1. The convergence scenario
• What is it, state of play, economic potential and roles, incentives and barriers of key stakeholders, why not happening, etc
2. Application and services• that could be developed in such scenario: enablers, gaps and barriers, use cases,
stakeholders, facilitating the formation of an ecosystem of developers, business models and potential and costs vs benefit, etc.
3. Data and Information Value Chains • Challenges to easier and harmonized access to data from ‘things” and the
establishment of data and information value chains
4. Plans and Strategies • For your organization or peers to move towards the converged scenario being
considered
5. Demonstrator • What UK demonstration facilities would help to move forward to with that scenario
