Polling Question
Where are you on your Flash journey?
A) No Flash deployed yet
B) Installed Flash in Server
C) Installed a flash based
server network (VSAN)
D) Installed a Hybrid Array
(HDD and Flash)
E) Installed an All-Flash Array
Polling Question
Where are you on your Flash journey?
Polling Question
What is your top concern about deploying All-
Flash?
A) Price
B) Reliability
C) Network Problems
D) Integrating with Legacy
Storage
E) Security
Polling Question
What is your top concern about deploying All-
Flash?
State of Solid State
Initial Wave
• Point based - solve a specific
problem
• HDD Assistance - a.k.a.
Hybrid
Next Wave… All-Flash
• Shared, Strategic Purchase
• Removes predictability
problem
• Focus is on driving down cost
while maintaining
performance
The ROI of All-Flash
The Hard Disk Performance Problem
• Stuck at 15k RPM for over a
decade
• Performance improvement
achieved by:
● Using lots of HDDs
● Short stroking those drives
● Performance was improved by adding
drives - wasted capacity
● Controllers judged by how many
drives could it sustain
● Lead to scale out architectures
● Increased Complexity
The Flash Advantage
• Capacity and performance are
addressed separately
• Reduction or elimination in HDDs
can sometimes pay for All-Flash
• Cost and Storage System design
becomes key issue
The Flash Advantage
• Features like deduplication and
compression reduce cost per GB
• All-Flash enables data efficiency
with minimal, if any, performance
impact
• Rebuilds from drive failure much
faster
• Performance is predictable, no
cache misses
Net Results: Increases Density of
Everything
• Databases
• VDI
• Virtual Servers
• More users per application or
environment
Driving Down Flash Cost
Hybrid - The Flash Gateway
• Combine small flash area with high
capacity HDDs
• Delivered an effective cost per GB
• But causes some performance
predictability concerns
• Flash area should be super-sized
Data Efficiency
• Compression and Deduplication are
assisted by flash
• Compression and Deduplication
complement each other
• Should be done “in-line” - saves flash
life
• Thin Provisioning, clones also perform
well with flash
• Also could work in a hybrid
environment
All-Flash Arrays Are Cheaper Than
Performance Storage
• Less drive sprawl - performance is
not tied to capacity
• Less storage system sprawl - single
array can handle more workloads
with greater variety
• Data efficiency should work better
All-Flash Arrays Are Cheaper Than
Performance Storage
• Less drive sprawl - performance is
not tied to capacity
• Less storage system sprawl - single
array can handle more workloads
with greater variety
• Data efficiency should work better
• But, All-Flash Arrays are NOT
cheaper than capacity storage
Performance
Data Copy Data,
Archives
Not All Data is Created Equally
• The All-Flash Data Center will be
All-Flash for active data only
• In most data centers this is less
than 15% of the total data set
• Copy data can be as much as 50%
of the total data set
Disk Has A Role To Play in the All-
Flash Data Center
• Inexpensive tier for inactive data
and copy data
• Decision to be made: do you want
to manually move that data or do
you want it automated
All-Flash: Myth or Reality?
• Reality: Data Center will be All-
Flash for production data, HDD for
inactive and secondary data
• Reality: Data Efficiency has a role to
play for both Flash and HDD
• Reality: Many data centers will find
it attractive to start out all-flash and
then add disk later (if the system
supports)
