The Four Requirements of A Cloud Era File System
● Not ready for the Distributed Office and Mobile
Worker
● Limited cloud integration
● Unable to scale capacity and performance
independently
● Can’t keep up with new demands of data
protection and DR

George Crump is the founder of Storage Switzerland, the leading storage analyst focused on the subjects of big
data, solid state storage, virtualization, cloud computing and data protection. He is widely recognized for his
articles, white papers, and videos on such current approaches as all-flash arrays, deduplication, SSDs,
software-defined storage, backup appliances, and storage networking. He has over 25 years of experience
designing storage solutions for data centers across the US.

A Quick History of File
Systems
● Purpose
● Phase 1 - Home Directories /
Unstructured Data
● Phase 2 - Business-Critical
Unstructured Data
● Phase 3 - Applications and Virtualization
● Phase 4 - The Cloud
Understanding
the Cloud Era
Changing Use Cases
● Collaboration on files
● Distributed offices
● More mobile users
● Massive increase in capacity
and quantity
More Data Sources and Higher Resolutions
● Video (Surveillance, Aerial Imaging-Drones,
High Res 4K to 8K - and much more of it)
● Medical Scans – 2D to 3D and more of them
● IoT
● Log Data
● Rich Media / Design Files (Adobe)
● File Infrastructure is Ripe for Cloud
Transformation
● Reduces On-Premises Storage
Current File Systems Fall Short
● Struggling to meet capacity and file count
demands
● Struggling to meet distributed use case of
offices and users
● Struggling to meet backup and DR
requirements
● Little to no understanding of the cloud
○ Use it as an archive and maybe a backup
Cloud Becomes
the Backbone for
Global File
Access
● Minimizes need for (and costs of)
MPLS, WAN acceleration
● Changes unstructured data to an
operational expense
● Automatically creates DR Copies
● Eliminates the need for backup
The Requirements for a Cloud Era File System
Global Access● Multi-site enterprises
● Mobile workers
Global Access● Multi-site enterprises
● Mobile workers
Independent
Scaling of
Capacity and
Performance
● Scale performance at the edge
● Scale capacity in the cloud
Low Latency Cloud Integration
● Overcome speed of light issue
● Secure, local access to files
Low Latency Cloud Integration
Near-Zero RPO and RTOs
● Overcome speed of light issue
● Secure, local access to files
● Continuous versions as data changes
● Off-site - stored in the cloud
● Immutable - safe from Ransomware
○ And anything else that could potentially
corrupt files
● Rapid and simple recoveries
Summary
● Enterprises are already in the Cloud Era
● The Cloud is the obvious place to solve
the problem
● Requires a new take on file systems
● Distributed, Global, Cloud-Native
