Waiting time at Transantiago’s bus stops as space for information creation and exchange
Presented by José Allard & Sofía GuridiSchool of DesignPontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
“Regrettably, time spent waiting for public transport service has been accorded less attention in public transport studies than in-vehicle travel time, yet it affords a rich field for social and public health research into travel experience” (Russell, 2012, p.82)
Abstract Santiago de Chile public transport system, (Transantiago), has a daily demand of 3 million users who mainly access to the network through one of the eleven thousand bus stops spread throughout the city.
Transantiago´s users satisfaction rate is still low (4,6 in a scale from 1 to 7), and waiting time at bus stop is considerer a main factor in modeling the perception of the system. This project explores how user´s perception of waiting time at bus stop can change designing interventions that trigger participative interaction through different information platforms.
Information generation and its exchange is consider here as a mechanism for adding value to the waiting time experience. So the waiting experience which is usually considered as a lost of time can be transform into an active and valuable action where many activities and inte-raction can occurt.
Through different design methods we will share the observation process of transport users
some interventions and tests, which provided valuable insights for further solutions and applications.

OpportunityHow could we take advantage or add value from the generation and exchange of this information?
Can we approach the bus stop as a channel for public opinion?
Is it possible to transform the bus stop as an opportunity to empower people (citizens) while they wait?
Could we use this information to compensate or rewards transport users for their waiting time?
Proyect description
It is based on information generated by common people while waiting for a bus. Answering questions, users will recieve rewards (points) which will compensate their wanting time.

Partial Conclusions
Through different exercises and interventions we were able to demonstrate a positive change in users disposition towards the generation and exchange of valuable opinions while they were waiting for a bus.
Partial Conclusions
A pilot project will be conducted in order to measure the reduction of time perception and the general evaluation of the transport system through this project/service.
