What is a browser and why is there so many of them?

What is email and what is an email client?

Internet service providers-

What is an ISP and how important are they in accessing the Internet?

I don’t have a telephone line at home can I still access the Internet through a given ISP?

What is downloading and uploading and how is it measured?

Web hosting services-

What is web hosting? How do I get my own personal web address? What is the difference between a .com and a .co.uk?

Web 2.0 & blogging-

What is meant by the meaning Web 2.0? What is blogging and how long has it been happening for? Where can I blog?

Online applicants-

What are online applications? Is this the same as cloud computing? Where can I find online applications?

To access the internet with hardware you will need to setup a broadband connection such as Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or ca-ble, you need a DSL or cable modem. This is usually included as part of the start-up hardware from your ISP when you sign up for a broadband account. For a dial-up connection, you need a dial-up modem. Many computers come with this type of modem already installed.

A proxy server is a something that allows you to improve performance for group us-ers. It does this by saving results of all requests for a certain amount of time. For ex-ample lets say that someone accesses the internet within a business to complete a piece of work. an hour later and someone else within the business goes on the same website because he needs the same information. Because the information has already been accessed once the website will open a lot faster, if you think about this in a massive business with thousands of employees this could make the workplace more efficient.

The difference between the web and proxy is that the web uses HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) servers from the web. The most used web servers are Apache, and Microsoft’s Internet information sever (IIS). Whereas a proxy server is connected to-gether with everyone within the server. mail is also different because it works through a mail transfer agent or MTA. The mail transport agent receives incoming e-mail from local users and remote senders and forwards outgoing e-mail for delivery. Microsoft Exchange, qmail, Exim and sendmail are some of the more common mail server programs.

To connect to the internet you simply need a modem, an ethernet cable, and a high speed internet connection. the connection can be set up by your cable company, phone company, or a private Internet provider. Of course a computer is needed to view the internet but to connect you simply need the three things above. To connect to the internet you need an ip address, a subnet mask and a default gateway

To access the internet you will ne to have win-dows 98/2000/2003/XP/vista or if you have a mac the software you will need to access the internet is Apple Macintosh. You will also need some type of browser downloaded such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google chrome.

A web browser is a software application for re-ceiving, presenting and traversing information re-sources on the web.

Although browsers are primarily intended to ac-cess the World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by web serv-ers in private networks or files in file systems. There are lots of different web browsers because they all offer different things. Firefox in more cus-tomisable than say Google chrome but its been known that Firefox has some problems. Whereas Google chrome is a lot easier to use and Google chrome doesn't have any problems. Internet Ex-plorer is one of the least up to date so a don’t ad-vise using that one.

So there are lots of different web browsers to en-sure that you have the right web browser for you.

An email client or email can be known as mail user agent (MUA). These are computer pro-grammes that are used to manage a users email.

Email Client

Email Email is a new form of commu-nication with computing. It starts with two people having email accounts and these could be with different clients such as yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail for exam-ples. You can send messages between the two account for free. The mail comes quickly and efficiently.

An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is

the component you will need if you want to connect to the internet. Because ISP gives you access to the internet. It does this through a phone line which is found in your house. Examples of ISP_ s are BT, virgin, SKY and others. To be able to connect to the internet you would need to sign up with one of these pro-viders.

There are other ways to connect to

the internet so it doesn't have to be through a telephone line.

ADSL. You don't need any phone lines at all unless you want to make voice calls. You can get ADSL connected, it's cheaper than having a separate phone line to your internet connection so it would be much easier, faster and more convenient too.

Satellite. It's possible to get broad-band satellite Internet connected. It doesn’t require a phone line as long as you have a two way satellite. It’s a very fast speed internet. But it’s very ex-pensive.

When downloading and/or up-loading it is measured in either kbps (Kilobits per second) or mbps (Megabits per second).

Web hosting is a simple way to get users and organisa-tions to form their own website onto the internet. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as Provid-ing Internet connectivity.

To get your own personal web address you firstly would need to pay a small fee for some domain names (domain names are a series of strings separated by periods like for e.g. www.oup-usa.org). You then will need to find a web host. When you have found a web host its about designing on some software like Dreamweaver.

The differences between the two internet addresses .uk and .com are .uk are .uk is for United Kingdom and .com is American.

The Web 2.0 is a term given to describe

a second generation of the World Wide Web. It’s focused on the ability to let us-ers share information online.

Blogs are made by different people all over the world. There all about different commentary, descriptions of events, or anything else like video or graphics.

Blogging is massive worldwide and its been going on since the 1990’s. So to this date blogging has been going on for around 20 years. It’s also been found that as of 16 February 2011, there is over 156 million public blogs.

Anyone can blog from any blogging website. There are lots of different blogging websites but some of the most common ones are Blogger, twitter and Facebook.

With online applications the functionality and data continues on a server which is accessed over the internet, so you’ll only need an internet connection and a web browser to access them.

Online applications make it easier for lots of companies that try to keep organised. They allow the website to collect the data quickly and efficiently.

Cloud computing is an online form of computing that when users want to up-load an application it is installed and stored on a server. This is a whole new way of computing and is allowing thou-sands of users all around the world to access files without having to download and install anything on their own com-puters. With cloud computing it doesn't need to be processed through software and hardware.

Online application can be found on a big verity of websites but some of the more common ones are recruitment websites, billing websites (PayPal for e.g.) and online shopping.
