    What’s New with Curriculum?

Band, Student Council and more! Student activities are staying busy with the many activities each club is having on campus! BAND hosted the Winter Guard and Drum Line Competition on March 23rd. Kudos to our Band program, as well as our Director, Mr. Hines, and all the students, on winning Third Place and a job well done. STUCO did a great job with our Spring Assembly as students and teachers put on a great show for our student body. They also hosted a terrific Sadies Dance. With all of the wonderful things our Student Council is doing, our climate and culture here at Desert Pines is improving. The DP SWIM TEAM celebrated a great season by taking a dip in the hot springs!

    Desert Pines ELL Program

Desert Pines created an English Language Learner (ELL) cadre for the 2015-2016 school, which serviced approximately 210 of the 9th and 10th grade ELL students on campus. For the 2016-2017 school year, this group grew to include the 11th and 12th grade ELL students as well.

Desert Pines High School is committed to providing services to English learners to ensure they are acquiring English Language Proficiency and to recoup any academic deficits that may have been incurred in any area of the core curriculum. In order to do that, content area teachers have been selected to teach several sheltered instruction classes. Sheltered Instruction is a teaching style founded on the concept of providing meaningful instruction in the content areas (social studies, math, science, and English) for transitioning Limited English Proficient (LEP) students towards higher academic achievement while they reach English fluency. The dual goals of sheltered instruction are:

1.To provide access to mainstream, grade-level content, and

2.To promote the development of English language proficiency.

The ELL department at Desert Pines High School will ensure that each English learner receives a program of instruction in

Desert Pines is excited to offer this level of support to the ELL students on campus.
