Janelle McCulloch – writing workshop10.00 am – 1.00 pmJanelle McCulloch has worked as a journalist, writer, and photographer in London, Sydney and Melbourne, although much of her work is now in the US. Her body of work covers both magazines and books on architecture, gardens and design. Janelle was formerly an editor of lifestyle magazines, columnist for Inside Melbourne magazine, travel writer and book editor in London and Europe and a regular freelance writer for many magazines, including Vogue Living and Sunday Life in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. She is the author of more than 20 books, including two memoirs and 15 books about architecture, gardens, travel, style and design. Janelle’s blog, A Library of Design, has an international following.

In this three-hour writing workshop, Janelle will inspire you and guide your writing, whether you are a beginner with the seed of a book that needs assistance, a writer with a work in progress that needs a sense of direction or someone who needs a final push to get your book over the line.

Topics covered include:• Writing a genre you love – the first step to feeling passionate about your work.• Writing a story you feel compelled to tell – whether it’s the story of your family, your

own life or a story you heard somewhere...• How to start – whether your start is a carefully thought-out structure, simple plot line,

great first line or first chapter.• Setting aside the time and finding the discipline to write.• Assessing the publishing market and its current trends. To write, you have to think

like an editor or publisher. What’s selling? What’s likely to sell in the future?• How to pitch a book project to a publisher or editor.• Having a ‘platform’. The brutal truth of publishing in today’s market is that publishers

are looking for authors with an existing social following. How do you navigate this?• Q & A.

Dawn Barker – author of Fractured and Let Her Go2.00 pm – 3.00 pmDr Dawn Barker is a psychiatrist and author.

Her first novel, Fractured, was selected for the 2010 Hachette manuscript development competition. It went on to be one of Australia’s top-selling debut fiction titles in 2013 and was shortlisted for the 2014 Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards.

Her second novel, Let Her Go, was published in July 2014 and has just been published in the UK.

Dawn has written non-fiction on mental health and parenting for various magazines and websites including Good Weekend, Mamamia, Essential Baby, Quartz, Artlink, and The Medical Journal of Australia. Dawn currently lives in Perth with her husband and three young children. She is working on her third novel.

Dawn will talk about her writing journey, from her birthplace of Scotland to her current home in Australia, and from her career as a psychiatrist.

Steven Marcuson – author of The Bunting Quest3.15 pm – 4.15 pmWhen Steven Marcuson was a boy, he loved to visit Grandma and Grandpa Green and read their set of ancient encyclopaedias. The last volume was his favourite, filled with adventures, treasure maps and cannibals on remote South Sea islands. Steven imagined being whisked away on a sailing ship, perched 200 feet up, in the crow’s nest with a telescope, scanning the never-ending ocean for the Jolly Roger, shipwrecks and sharks. This spark of youthful imagination is where The Bunting Quest first evolved.

In 1581, Heinrich Bunting, a Lutheran priest from Magdeburg, published a crude map of the world. The map depicts an outline of Western Australia that is remarkably accurate. However, this is not possible as the Dutch did not ‘discover’ Australia until 1606 and this coastline was not drawn on any reputable map until c.1635. The map fails to show Madagascar and turns the boot of Italy around the wrong way. The map has been discounted as one of any importance by historians and is described as a ‘cartographic curiosity’.

The Bunting Quest features Nick Lawrance, an antique map and chart dealer in London. Nick is caught up in a murder-mystery when the Bunting map is stolen from his gallery.

Bernice Barry – self-publishing today: from writing and designing to the printed book4.30 pm – 5.30 pmIn 2015, after more than 10 years of research, Bernice Barry self-published her book Georgiana Molloy: The Mind That Shines, a new biography of Western Australia’s first internationally successful female botanist. A year later, in 2016, the book was published by Picador (Pan Macmillan ANZ) with the same front cover.

Bernice will share her experiences of self-publishing a print book from the first stages of editing and preparing a manuscript for publication through to marketing, distribution and publicity. She will describe the decisions that had to be made and will share some of what she learnt at each stage of the process.

With a professional background in education, Bernice has worked internationally in the areas of literacy and curriculum innovation. She began writing full-time in 2011 to gather the historical research she had collected since emigrating to Western Australia from the UK in 2001. Her previous publications are all in the field of education, including the use of new media for teaching English. There are two more books on the way.

Janelle McCulloch – evening session5.30 pm – 7.00 pmJoin us as Janelle talks about her two newly-released books.

Beyond the Rock: The Life of Joan Lindsay and the Mystery of Hanging Rock looks at not just the myth of Picnic at Hanging Rock and how it has become part of Australia’s culture but also the story behind it. It examines author Joan Lindsay’s enigmatic life, much of which she kept secret from the world, including her childhood, her complex marriage to Daryl Lindsay (of the famous Lindsay family of artists), their enduring love and unconventional bohemian life and her life at their country home ‘Mulberry Hill’ on the Mornington Peninsula.

London Secrets: Style, Design, Glamour, Gardens features the style and design secrets of London, from glorious little-known gardens to stylish boutique hotels, great design festivals, surprising neighbourhoods, fantastic fashion and design museums, amazing historic houses, beautiful bookshops, gorgeous textile stores, quirky specialty stores, memorable restaurants and other must-see destinations. London Secrets is an elegant guide to one of the world’s most glorious cities, packaged as a beautiful, easy-to-pack format that still feels like a glamorous coffee-table title.
