From the PrincipalDear Parents and Guardians,We have just experienced one of the busiest fortnights on this year’s school calendar. The busy-ness is a terrific reflection of the range of activities, experiences and opportunities both offered and willingly taken up by Galen students.

In that time, we have had:• students and staff returning from the East Timor immersion experience• Yr 10 Outdoor Education bushwalk in the high country• Two overnight Year 9 adventure camps on Mount Buffalo• The annual Italian students excursion to the opera in Melbourne• ANZAC Day assemblies at school• Galen staff and students marching in the Wangaratta ANZAC Day ceremony• Yr 8 visiting author program• The annual school musical production of “High School Musical”• The first of our two Year 11 Presentation Balls for 2013• Parents Association meeting• AGM of the Galen Catholic College school board

Whilst it was impossible for me to get to all of these events, there was a very clear and positive spirit amongst the students of those events I did attend. In particular, the two ANZAC Day assemblies that we held this year were reflective, deeply respectful and engaging. Our College Leaders led the ceremonies, the VCE Music class and the Galen Band provided vocal and instrumental support including the performance of the last post, reveille, the national anthem, “I was only 19” and “Heroes of War”.

I was very proud of the way in which our students responded to each of these events. There will be more detailed reports further on from the East Timor experience and the adventure camps. Both outdoor events coped with some rain and near-freezing condi-tions overnight but the reports I have heard back have been full of praise for the commitment and spirit of the students involved.

Similarly, I have heard nothing but praise for the organization and experience of the opera trip. This annual event provides a rich opportunity for our LOTE students to experience the culture, language and theatre associated with Italian opera.

The musical production again this year highlights the extraordinary talent of our young people. The quality of singing, acting, lighting, stage management, set construction, sound and music was exceptional. Once again, the magical work of Ms Julie Nolan and Mr David Ashfield, supported by a huge number of other staff and students, has done us proud.

On your behalf, I offer thanks to the staff who organized and participated in each of these events, most of them involving extensive hours outside of normal working time includ-ing, for quite a few of the staff involved, time away from home and family overnight. In the same way that there is a terrific spirit amongst our students, I am sure you will agree that the same thing applies to our staff who offer their time, expertise and energy so that these opportunities can occur for our children.

Board AGM: The AGM of the Galen Board is in a different category, of course, but this year’s marked the adoption of a new Board constitution, replacing the original constitu-tion of many years. Many thanks to Chair, Tony Lane for leading this process. Tony has been re-elected as Chair for the next year, supported by Deputy Chair, Mr Mark Williams. We formally thanked those Board members who have retired from Board membership and made a small presentation to commemorate their time with the Board. Departing members are Mr Mick Grogan (staff rep), Mr John Pasztor (staff rep), Mr Cameron Butler (community rep), Monsignr John White (Canonical Administrator), and Mr Max Fletcher (CEO rep). We welcomed Ms Angela Killingsworth (CEO rep), and acknowledged the ap-pointment of Mr Darren Hovey as Deputy Principal appointee.

Year 7 (2014) Information Night and school tours: The Information Night for prospective 2014 Year 7 will be held on Tuesday May 8 at Galen in the Max Fletcher auditorium start-ing at 7:00pm. This Information Night is for parents and guardians only.

Organised tours of the school will take place on May 9, 10, 13 and 14. Parents and students are very welcome to attend, but need to call the college to make an appointment as spaces on each tour are limited.

Best wishes, Bernard Neal - Principal

Medication at GalenDear Parents and Students,

Galen is no longer permitted to give Panadol/Paracetemol to students if they have a

headache. If students are feeling unwell, they should still come to the sick bay and parents will be notified, just as we have done in the

past. If needed, students can bring their own Panadol from home for use at school and this

will be kept securely in the sickbay for their personal use.

On Wednesday 24th April, Galen College remembered our Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) who fought during the First World War. Galen had the privilege of being joined by distinguished guests Mr Arthur Bretherton (ANZAC Coordinator, Wangaratta RSL Sub-branch), Mr Norm Fearn (President, Wangaratta RSL Sub-branch), and Mr Kevin Howard (Secretary, Wangaratta RSL Sub-branch). The annual ceremony is often a moving one, and this year was no exception. ANZAC Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, endurance, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.

Galen showcased the talents of our students with performances from the Senior Concert Band and solo’s from Matt Adamo, who sang Redgum’s ‘I was only Nineteen’ and Ben Creed performed ‘Heroes of War’. Both of these excellent solo’s were supported by the Senior Music class. Jacob Trethowan played The Last Post and the Reveille. Both were performed perfectly and caused both staff and students to pause and quietly reflect on those who gave their lives to enable us to live freely today.

Our College Captains, Andrew Mair and Bridie Naughtin, represented Galen at the local Anzac Service on Anzac Day (25th April) and laid a wreath on behalf of the College community at the Wangaratta Cenotaph.

Death of FormerPrincipal of

Champagnat College The college has learned that Brother Austin Redden FMS died in Adelaide recently. Brother Austin was the last principal of Champagnat College, holding this position for 1981-1982. He left Wangaratta at end of 1982, just before the amalgamation of Champagnat College, St. Joseph’s College and the Galen senior college in 1983. The school extends its condolences to the other members of the Marist Brothers in Australia and remembers with gratitude the foundational work of Brother Austin in the education of boys in Wangaratta and the surrounding district.

Words from WellbeingTherese Rodway - Wellbeing & Pastoral Care

Getting the sleep you need

A common complaint of students in wellbeing is that they cannot sleep! Sleep as we know is critical for rest, recovery, and resetting the batteries! Not enough sleep can sometimes lead to depression and feeling anxious. Coming into winter when people can feel more flat then normal, we’ve developed some guidelines to assist you enter slumber land with bliss and ease. Give these strategies a go, and if you have trouble talk to a trusted adult and/or your family GP.

Most people need between 5 to 9 hours sleep a night

but, when it comes down to it, it’s not the total length of sleep that really matters. It’s how good the sleep is for your body and whether you’re getting… “deep sleep” or “dream sleep”.

To induce this deep sleep state remember you can:

1. Prepare for sleep half an hour before you put your head on the pillow (get your uniform ready, pack your bag, set alarm)2. Reduce any factors that might keep you awake (phones, computers, external noises)3. Get any medical conditions under control (asthma, pain etc)4. Reduce stimulants and sedatives (tea, coffee, choco-late, cigarettes, herbal remedies and self medications) don’t drink too much liquid!5. Get plenty of morning sunlight 6. Exercise 4-6 hours before bedtime7. Have a hot shower before bedtime8. Wake up and go to bed at a fixed time every day9. Have a ritual before bed (like reading or listening to calm music)10. If you are worrying about something, set some time aside during the day to problem solve (talk to an adult to share the load)11. Avoid heavy bedding and wear comfy bedclothes 12. Hide your clock/phone so you don’t check the time13. Avoid napping during the day

Those who concentrate best can sleep best!If you can’t sleep:

1. Write a letter2. Write in your journal3. Read a book4. Listen to relaxing music5. Concentrate on your breath6. Try meditation and relaxation techniques (like Mon-day’s session at 1:15 in the drama room7. Make your mind hop from one idea to another (like a great holiday, plans you have, childhood memory, weekend plans)8. Get out of bed and find a space where you can do something for 15-20mins that is distracting (reading, Sudoku, crossword), go back to bed when feeling sleepy, repeat if need be. Adapted from Beyond Blue sleep fact sheet:www.youthbeyondblue.com and The Alfred Hospital Sleep Disorders Centre.

Year 9’s Discover WetlandsYear 9 Discovery has been completing the sustainability unit, Bigfoot, over the last few weeks. As part of this unit we have visited the Wonga Wetlands in Albury and the Winton Wetlands. 9/1 visited the Winton Wetlands and discovered a real treasure right on or door step. The ranger Michael Saunders, an ex Galen student, provided the group with an extensive tour of the wetlands and we were treated to spectacular displays of hundreds of pelicans taking flight. The students were also involved in hand broadcasting mixed acacia seeds and we will hopefully be able to check on their germination and progress later in the year. We hope to establish a partnership with the Winton Wetlands as there is much work to be done to regenerate the site after Lake Mokoan was decommissioned.

At our recent Senior School Assembly, Mrs. Albertson’s homeroom presented the theme of Appreciation. The message strongly promoted that we should appreciate everything that we have in our lives and not to take it for granted. The assembly concluded with the following reflection:

LIFE IS AN OPPORTUNITYLife is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is a beauty, admire it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, overcome it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is life, fight for it!

NAPLAN for Years 7 & 9Dear Parents & Carers,

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2013 tests for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday May 14th, Wednesday May 15th and Thursday May 16th 2013. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in writing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

All students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. During test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days. These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the scheduled test, up to and including Friday May 17th 2013. Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year.

Students may be withdrawn from the NAPLAN by their parent or carer. We encourage all students to participate in the testing. If you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign the Student Exemption / Withdrawal form which was sent home with your child on Friday 26th April.

Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe your child’s particular skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at: www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAPLAN website at www.nap.edu.au.If you have any other concerns please contact Darren Hovey.Email: [email protected]

A Night at the Opera

The annual Galen College Opera trip to see ‘AIDA’ by Verdi involved 94 students this year. Set in ancient Egypt, students were treated to a fantastic display of musical poetry, drama, dance, costume and set design. Definitely the best of Verdi! The costumes and set designs were particularly noteworthy not to mention the emotionally stirring chorus work.

The students took particular pride in the way they dressed for the occasion. This is always a highlight! Members of the public commented on the way our students presented themselves and how comfortable they were with opera ‘etiquette’. It was a very late return home but everyone had a great time and was the better for the cultural experience.

Senior Boys’ SoccerThe Year 12’s played soccer in Myrtleford on Thursday the 18th of April. We played against two Wodonga Schools and one Myrtleford school, we came across the first match against Wodonga and came to a 3.1 loss with Drew Hiskins as goalkeeper, Damian Albertson scoring a goal that lifted the team up but unfortunately was not enough to win. We played Marian Collage next and had a great win with a 7.0 win, Will Keenan demanding the ball for himself to place at the back of the net. At this point for our last match we needed to have a win to be placed in the next round. We played the other Wodonga side that has been undefeated for the day. We held up pretty well in the defence with Jake Murphy, Rob Carnovale, Sean Bartlett and myself until a header from the opposition went past our keeper and in the net. We all knew it was not over yet. 15 minutes later James McClounan hits a long shot near from half way and the keeper had no chance of saving it. That put us in a 1.1 Draw at half time. The second half begins, we came out putting in everything we had left. 10 minutes into the game the opposition gave away a penalty due to a handball, James McClounan was quick enough to claim that he was taking it, and scored putting Galen in the lead 2.1. The game was very intense until they scored a equalizer at 3 minutes to go and left the match at 2.2 draw that wasn’t enough to get through. It was a great day and I hoped the boys enjoyed it. Thanks to Mr Pasztor and Tommy Frawley for being great coaches. Bad luck boys!
