Ovations celebrate Metro Vancouver’s best builders, renovators and designers. Short for the award’s original name “RenOvation,” the honor covers new builds now as well as renovation projects. Kerr Construction, well-known for quality workmanship and intelligent design, has been nominated in two vastly different categories at the 2014 awards – Best Renovated Bathroom: Under $35,000 and Best New Custom Home: $750,000-$1.5 million. The company’s bathroom reno nomination is a North Vancouver project that boasts their trademark good design – executed on a small budget. The custom home, located in the middle of a commercial area in False Creek’s Alder Crossing, was the trickier of the two projects, according to Kerr Construction owner Doug Kerr. Kerr Construction focused on giving the home a residential feel, despite its unusual perch atop a multi-storey parking garage. One of their innovations was a year-round “textured” green wall. “What would normally be solid concrete – and solid wall – is now lots of nice greenery,” says Kerr. They used a variety of climbing plants in different colours to achieve visual interest. “It’s not just ivy,” he says. The custom home is also a fully-automated smart house, with lights, irrigation – even green wall plant fertilization – all done automatically. “There’s a lot of cutting-edge stuff in this home,” says Kerr. These fresh nominations are certainly not the first time Kerr Construction’s work has been noticed. The company has been nominated for – and won – several dozen local, provincial and national honors. They held four Ovation Awards – and were listed as finalists for another two – prior to their 2014 wins. While awards are certainly nice, at the end of the day Kerr says what really matters to his company are happy clients. “One of the things that we work hardest on is building trust and getting referrals. This forms immune complexes which deposit in the nasal mucosa and upper respiratory tract,

causing the blood vessels to be more reactive to external allergens (pollens). A simple blood test examines 95 foods and the levels of antibodies (immune cells) that are triggered by these foods. Removal of these foods, along with the proper supplementation, can decrease inflammation and address the cause of the allergies.

What about allergies that are worse during times of stress? Our adrenal glands (we have two) sit on top

of our kidneys and are responsible for regulating blood pressure, blood sugar, sex hormones and stress hormones. If we have been under prolonged periods of stress, the adrenal glands are no longer able to produce adequate hormone levels

to keep inflammation in the body down. At this point, we are more susceptible to colds, flu, allergies, and feeling run down. It is important to choose the right support for the adrenal glands as some supplements can cause elevation in heart rate and blood pressure.

These savoury muffins have a wonderful pizza flavour. They are perfect for lunches or on the go.

Makes 12 servings

INGREDIENTS

1 cup (250 mL) cornmeal 1 cup (250 mL) whole-wheat flour 1 tsp (5 mL) dried oregano 1 ½ tsp (7 mL) baking powder ½ tsp (2 mL) baking soda 2 eggs 1 ½ cups (375 mL) buttermilk or light sour cream 2 tbsp (25 mL) tomato paste, divided ½ cup (125 mL) shredded light old cheddar cheese,

loosely packed, divided Canola cooking spray

DIRECTIONS

• Preheat oven to 400º F (200º C). Spray a muffin tin very lightly with cooking spray. Do not use muffin papers; they will stick.

• In a large bowl, mix together cornmeal, flour, oregano, baking powder and baking soda.

• In a second bowl, combine the eggs, buttermilk, 1 tbsp (15 mL) tomato paste, and 1/3 cup (75 mL) cheese. Add it to the dry ingredients, and mixed until just combined.

• Divide the mixture evenly in a 12 cup muffin tin. Top each muffin with a smear of tomato paste and a little cheese.

• Bake for 20 minutes. Store in an air-tight container for one day or wrap individually and freeze.
