Peter’s Official Bulletin
Well it was most interesting to
receive an invitation to attend a
District 9810 Youth Exchange
Program (YEP) presentation,
through fellow RCBMC club member
Geoff Gartly along with his family
including Luiza (from Brazil) to join other returning YEP’s and incoming YEP’s that
was held at the Mulgrave Country Club on Friday 23rd
February 2018.
As RCBMC President it was very enlightening
to join other District 9810 Rotary Clubs and
have returning YEP’s relate their amazing
stories and challenges that they faced with their host families and learning
another language.
For those RCBMC club members that have not been part of the Youth
Exchange Program here is the background, duration and how the program
has change and enhanced those students that have travelled far and wide.
Rotary Youth Exchange Australia provides an opportunity of a lifetime for Australian high school students to live & study abroad Rotary Youth Exchange is registrated with State and Territory Education Authorities to provide Secondary Student Exchange Programs. Each year thousands of young people worldwide are given an opportunity to experience the cultures and accomplishments of people in other countries.
During your exchange, you will grow considerably in self-confidence, tolerance and self-reliance.
You'll also learn to accept greater responsibility in your everyday life.
My youth exchange
year was one of
incredible change and
growth for me. In
addition to seeing so
much of the rest of the
world, and making such
wonderful friends, I

News from Club Meeting Wednesday 21st February 2018 Arrowsmith Program The International Toast by Grant Perry for the meet-
ing on Wednesday 21st February 2018 was to the
Rotary Club of Saint Lucia, District 7030 that was
chartered in 1966.
The President is Joanna Charles
Saint Lucia is an island in the West Indies, part of
the Lesser Antilles group.West Indies comprises of:-
Great Antilles
Lesser Antilles
Lucayan Archipelago (Bahama Archipelago)
The Lesser Antilles sit on the outer edge of the Car-
ibbean Plate. Many of the islands were formed as a
result of the South American plate sinking under the
Caribbean Plate The Rotary Club of Saint Lucia meets at the Sandals Halcyon Choc Kelly’s Dockside on Friday’s
at 12:15pm.
The guest speaker at our club meeting on Wednesday 21st Febru-
ary 2018 was Catherine Green from the Holy Trinity Arrowsmith program that went on to inform club members about the program. TO BEGIN WITH THE OBVIOUS - WHAT IS THE HOLY TRINITY ARROWSMITH PROGRAM? The Holy Trinity parish is comprised of three schools in local area – St Peter’s East Bentleigh, St Paul’s Bentleigh and St Catherine’s Moorabbin.
And the Arrowsmith Program is a pro-gram for people with LDs, which is a com-pletely different, innovative and life changing way of assessing and treating
LDs. SO WHAT IS THE ARROWSMITH PRO-GRAM AND WHY IS IT DIFFERENT? Why are over 70 Australian families currently living in Canada to access this program? - The AP was started 35 years ago in Can-ada by Barbara Arrowsmith Young. She has written a book called ‘The Woman Who Changed Her Brain’ which some of you may have heard of. - The AP is a completely different way to treat LDs and that is because it gets to the root of the problem. It is based on neauro-plasticity – the understanding that the brain is plastic and can be changed. Through
(Continued on page 3)
thorough testing, the AP identifies where the problem is stemming from - literally the weak cognitive areas in the brain that are causing the LD - and then addresses those areas specifically, using repetitive cognitive exer-cises over a long period of time to strengthen those weak areas of the brain. The Arrowsmith classroom does not look like a normal classroom. Each child is working individually, on their own personalized cogni-
tive program, addressing their own specific needs. Some will be wearing an eye patch, some will be tracing green symbols with a red pen, some will be wearing head phones, some will be working on a 6-handed clock on a com-puter screen… None however will be working on traditional academic exercises. The other major difference is that there is 1 Arrowsmith teacher for every 10 students. We are now into the fourth year of running the
program, and significantly this is our first year after successfully completing our three-year pilot. We are now offering a fulltime program for primary students and a part time program
for secondary students and adults and as I have already mentioned, we have moved the entire pro-gram to St Catherine’s Moorabbin
and are reno-vating a dis-cussed part of the school to create a pur-pose build Ar-rowsmith Cen-tre. Pres Peter O’Brien

changed in ways I never knew were possible. Thank you Rotary for the best year of my life!
You will have to adapt to unfamiliar and different surroundings and ways of life that are different from home.
For some this will be the first extended period of separation from their family. This will bring about many trials and tribulations which you will need to overcome and by so doing develop many "survival skills".
To live away from home for the 50 weeks duration of the exchange is a demanding yet rewarding experience. It is not always smooth sailing and requires a great strength of character, tolerance and an understanding of the acceptance personal responsibility.
The exchange provides a unique opportunity for young Australians to experience at first hand the many cultures of a different country, a new way of life and in some instances another language. Often, the friendships they make will be life long and important in achieving the aims of the exchange - the building of goodwill and understanding between countries.
As a Rotary Youth Exchange you'll have:
An opportunity to develop your personal self confidence and maturity
An opportunity to develop a lifetime of international friendships
An opportunity to develop a real understanding of many different cultures
An opportunity to develop new language skills
An opportunity to develop a base for future education and career goals
An opportunity to develop in many ways
