Hello! I’m excited to welcome you to the 2018-2019 professional season at the George Daily Auditorium. If I were to identify an underlying theme in our season’s offerings, it would be the intermingling of the old and the new. For example, some of our favorite companies in recent memory are returning with brand new material in Artrageous! and The Headless Hessian of Sleepy Hollow. We’ll also salute the music of Glen Campbell and John Denver and revisit the ancient legend of King Arthur and the recent children’s classic, Junie B. Jones.

You may remember that last year we celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the Auditorium. 2019 brings our twentieth consecutive year of community youth performing with Missoula Children’s Theatre and the two decade marker for the Youth Theatre program. As we celebrate these milestones and contemplate the many Friends of the Auditorium, sponsors, volunteers, youth directors, staff members, families, students, and community members who have made them possible, let’s also take time to imagine what comes next. What legacy do we want the performing arts to have in our community? Who will make up the next generation of arts supporters in Mahaska County? Why does it matter?

In the Education Department, we are keenly aware of our mission: we are a theatre education program that uses theatre as a tool to strengthen citizenship and personal growth. We believe that theatre offers unique educational experiences that focus on practicing empathy, creative thinking, problem-solving, goal setting, and collaboration skills while operating within a “team” atmosphere that is focused on tackling the challenges of a production, not beating an opposing team.

These beliefs, and our genuine love of the arts, inspire us to instill a lifelong love of theatre and arts support in our students. Most importantly, we hope that the training students receive in our program will prepare them to be creative, proactive citizens in their communities and future places of employment. The challenges that communities like ours will face in the coming years may be very stiff, but the thoughtful, wildly intelligent, energetic students I’ve worked with over the past six years in the George Daily Youth Theatre and Music Studio leave me looking forward to what our collective future holds. Thank you so much for your support -- with your help, the George Daily Auditorium is working to uphold our community’s past, present, and future.

George Daily grew up in a poor family. His father, John, was frequently absent, working as a traveling house painter. Although times were tough, John sometimes purchased small pieces of land in tax sales during his travels. Through a stroke of luck, a piece of land John purchased in Louisiana turned out to be rich with oil. George later inherited this land.

Although George regularly received checks from an oil company for this rich land, he lived as a poor man. He never cashed the checks because he wanted nothing to do with the father who was so often absent in his life. No one knew about George’s money until the oil company sent someone to investigate why the property taxes weren’t being paid and the checks they were sending weren’t being cashed.

Before George died in 1993, he established a will leaving his entire estate in trust for the benefit of the Oskaloosa community.

The George Daily Auditorium was made possible through the legacy of its namesake, who left his estate for the betterment of the Oskaloosa Community. What began as “A Seed for Growth,” the motto of the George Daily Family Trust, has grown into a venue for high-caliber performances and educational opportunities equal to those of big cities.

Since opening its doors in 1997, the auditorium has provided the Oskaloosa community with a place to foster the arts and enrichment activities of all sorts. The venue includes state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, a full orchestra pit, seating for 696 patrons, an intimate black box theater, a community meeting room, and a small kitchen. It also serves as one of the few large group recording studios in Iowa.

On any given day, the auditorium plays host to educational children’s theater workshops, high school play rehearsals, professional touring productions, regional dance competitions, business conferences, artist receptions, public interest lectures, school assemblies, concerts, and so much more. The auditorium is also home to the Oskaloosa Symphony Orchestra. Each year brings new opportunities to the George Daily Auditorium. Join us this season to experience firsthand some of the many ways Daily makes a difference.
