Physical Geography of Canada MexicoSummary

• Made up of ten provinces and three Territories.

• Canada is the second-largest country in area in the world after Russia.

• More than 5,000 miles (8,050 km) of undefended border with the US. About 80percent of Canada’s population lives within 100 miles of the US-Canadianborder.

Physical Geography of Canada MexicoLandforms

• The western third of Canada is mountainous. Collisions between tectonic plates millions of years ago thrust up a series of sharp-peaked mountains called the Pacific Ranges.

• The Rocky Mountains link the United States and Canada, stretching more than 3,000 miles (4,828 km) from New Mexico to Alaska.

• East of the Rockies, the land falls in elevation and flattens into the Great Plainsand Interior Lowlands, which extend across the center of the region and south into the United States.

Physical Geography of Canada MexicoLandforms Pt. 2

• At the eastern edge of the Interior Lowlands lies the Canadian Shield. The Canadian Shield is a giant core of rock anchoring the continent and centered on Hudson Bay and James Bay.

• Erosion and glacial ice from the last ice age have smoothed the surface and created lakes, rivers, and streams.

• The heavily eroded Appalachian Mountains are North America’s oldest mountains. They extend from Canada’s Maritime Provinces south through the eastern United States to the state of Alabama.

Physical Geography of CanadaWater Systems

• Canada’s plentiful freshwater lakes and rivers support the needs of people and industries in both cities and rural areas.

• The St. Lawrence River is one of Canada's most important rivers and forms part of the border between the United States and Canada.

• The Niagara Falls, also on the border, is a key source of hydroelectric power, which is electricity generated from flowing or falling water

Niagara FallsNiagara Falls• Niagara Falls span the international border between the Canadian province

of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. They are known for their scenicbeauty and are used for hydroelectric power.

• The Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls provide the most scenic view of Niagara Falls. About 90 percent of all the water flowing in the Niagara Riverplunges about 170 feet (54 m) down these falls. The falling water creates a thunderous noise that echoes along the Niagara Gorge.

Physical Geography of CanadaClimate, Biomes, and Resources

• Canada is rarely affected by natural weather hazards. The waters off the Pacific and Atlantic coasts are too cold to support hurricanes.

• Ocean currents, like the Gulf Stream and Labrador Current, play a key role in Canada’s large variation in climates.

• Fisheries as well as timber, energy, and minerals are important to Canada's economy.

• The Athabasca Tar Sands make Canada a leading petroleum-producing country. Tar Sands are an underground layer naturally infused with petroleum
