Year 12 In a very short time I will be speaking to Year 12 students and their families at their Graduation Assembly 10am on Thursday 22 September. This will obviously be an extremely significant occasion for all concerned and I look forward to families and friends of our students attending. As usual, our wonderful friends of the combined churches will be hosting a breakfast for Year 12 and teachers prior to the Assembly. This is a very special tradition for Kyogle High School and I thank all those involved to make this happen.

The Farewell to Year 12 Social was held last Monday night and was very well attended. Thankyou to Mr McKee and the SRC for hosting this event.

As we near the end of Year 12 attending school, I do remind our students to uphold our school values and make wise choices concerning their behaviour both in and out of school. It is also a time to finalise the work they have been doing in class and seek sound advice of study schedules and revision before the HSC exams.

Geo-Photography Competition Once again the Geo-photography competition run by Ms Clarkson and Mrs McPherson was an outstanding success with the display at the Roxy Gallery complimented by the community. I congratulate all the students who entered the competition, our sponsors and of course our staff who put so much time and effort into the event.

Facebook Page Keep up to date with the latest announcements and events happening at Kyogle High School with our Facebook page managed by Ms McDonough. Thank you to our community who take the time to like announcements or comment on events that happen at school

State Athletics I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all our students who made the State Athletics squad. It was certainly a huge accolade for both our school and our community. A special thank you to the parents who gave up their time to travel to Sydney with the students and supervise them over the three days – your support is greatly appreciated.

Wishing all of our school community a great fortnight.

Principal’s Report

Welcome to this issue of the KHS newsletter. As Term 3 comes to its conclusion, it is timely to look at the effort the executive of the school has made to include all our valued members in the decision making, planning and development that continues to occur. Our continued collaborative and transparent aim is to develop and implement a best practice model within the school. The traditional areas such as P&C, SRC and school committee teams allow parents/carers, students and teacher the ability to help shape the future of our school. Parents/carers, students and teachers have participated in a number of school based reviews of areas within the school and in surveys, including the Tell Them From Me Semester 2 survey and the Readiness for Change and Improvement survey. All these opportunities give voice and construction to improved outcomes for all students. I encourage parents/carers to participate in the Tell Them From Me Survey online. The link for the TTFM survey is https://www.tellthemfromme.com, and it is open at this time. The generic username and password to use are: username = .\localuser and password = localuser

It remains important to be as involved as possible in the school’s development and to be confident and able to contribute. For all of us, it also becomes not only a right but a responsibility, as members of our school. And the proof of our collective great efforts and challenges has come in KHS very impressive NAPLAN results for 2016. With support and excellent teaching, our Year 9 students have grown their literacy rates at almost double the state average. Well done for all involved.

HSIE Whatsi The HSIE faculty have been busy presenting and completing many whole school activities to enhance the learning of our students. Here is a snapshot of some of the things they have participated in during the busy 2016 school year:

On Tuesday the 16

th August, Week 5, students in Years 7 – 11 participated in the

StartSmart Financial Literacy Roadshow.

Consisting of six different workshops, students were presented with lectures on

choices, earning, saving, spending, investing and enterprise.

It was a successful reconnection with getting all our students financially literate in

making better choices for savings, investments and general habits to

encourage smart decisions.

Kyogle High School has formed a stronger partnership with the Southern Cross

University School of Law and Justice. The school hosted a writing, research and

literacy workshop during Term 2. The aim of this was to improve the literacy of

the group from a Legal Studies perspective.

It was an invaluable opportunity to bring this

workshop to KHS and assist in improving

the skills in research and essay writing for

the Legal Studies classes.

The Year 12 HSC Legal Studies class went

to Southern Cross University with schools

across the Northern Rivers to prepare for

their Higher School Certificate examination

in around 8 weeks time. It was a great day

for the class to see and hear from HSC

markers tips and tricks to tackle the HSC

Legal Studies exam.

Way back in April, 3 of our Legal Studies

girls attended Bond University to participate

in the Bond Mooting competition. We were the only New South Wales School

and incidentally the smallest to compete against public and private schools in the

greater South – East Queensland region. The students had to present legal

arguments around a legal scenario. In this matter, it was an issue of whether or

not an accident was the fault of an operator of an extreme sports park or the rider

themselves who was a young person. It was a tremendous opportunity and

experience and assisted the girls in gaining confidence in public speaking, being

able to think on the spot and articulate points of law.

The Commerce and Business Studies students have also been active this year

and are currently participating in the second Australian Stock Market Schools

Game. Students are given $50 000 and for the next 10 weeks can trade shares.

They can purchase, sell and make a profit or loss choosing stocks from the top

200 listed Australian companies on the ASX.

Yours in Education,

Anthony Quantrill
