Dear Parents, Mastermaze, Dungeons and Dragons, Rubik’s Cube, Rubik’s Snake, Tamiya Radio Controlled cars, BMX, ‘Duncan’ yo-yos…the list goes on of ‘crazes’ that hit me and my classmates when I was growing up at school in the 80s. As a teacher, I have also seen: trainers with flashing lights on the bottom, Heely’s, Tamagotchis, Match Attax, laser pens, Minecraft, bottle flipping, dabbing and all sorts of other things over the years. They all come and go of course but the craze for Spring 2017 has to be what my son Patrick calls, ‘fidgety spinny things’. He has one, his friends all have them and it seems that half of Wetherby Prep and Senior have them as well. As long as common-sense prevails and they are used appropriately, I have no problem with that and they’ll be onto the next thing soon enough. Sometimes boys just need to do something with their hands. My mum would never leave celery out in our house as I would just munch through it, almost non-stop, until it disappeared. Celery is probably the most unsatisfying of all foodstuffs in that you could eat a mountain of it and it still wouldn’t fill you up but I would eat it as it just gave me something to do with my hands. No problem then with ‘fidgety spinny things’, particularly when, at Year 6 lunch this week, I witnessed some very inventive ways that they are being used by Wetherby boys!
My favourite ‘craze’ of all though has to be ‘Darda Cars’, wind up miniature cars that went incredibly fast, and a trip up to Hamley’s to see them race around a track on the ground floor was always such a treat. I had dozens of them, with the Knight Rider one and the Go-Kart my personal favourites. In my enthusiasm for fatherhood, when my boys were barely walking a few years ago, I went on eBay and bought dozens of these cars and loads of the track that had inspired me all those years ago. Sadly though, it was all a bit dated and none of the cars worked very well or went as fast as I remembered. The same can be said for the Tamiya RC ‘Hornet’ that I bought off eBay for a 3 year old Patrick and 1 year old Joseph. Neither were that impressed and neither was I – seemed nowadays to be a lot of faff and hours of charging a battery for barely ten minutes of action. The moral then, not to live my youth through my own children and let them find and be interested in their own ‘crazes’ in the contemporary society they are now part of. I still have my fond memories though!
Have a good weekend…
Old boy help!
An old Wetherby boy, Cameron Nicholson, has been in touch asking if any Wetherby families would like someone to assist with tutoring or helping out with their children during the summer holidays, or indeed before then if required. Last summer he left Winchester College with a good set of IGCSE grades and Pre-U D1, D2, D3, in German, Economics, and Maths. In October he will be going to study German and Czech at St Hugh's College, Oxford. If you are interested please email [email protected]
Citizen of the Week
This week’s Citizen of the Week is Oliver K in 8F. Oliver has shown such a mature and independent approach to preparing himself for Common Entrance, working hard in lessons, clarifying his understanding through intelligent questions and asking to attend Study Skills tuition instead of clubs of a Friday. Add to the above his gentle and warm character and we have a worthy Wetherby Citizen. Well done, Oliver!
Sportsman of the Week
This week’s Sportsman of the Week is Charlie R in 8G. We have enjoyed seeing Charlie develop his skills across all sports over the years here at Wetherby but it his skilful captaincy and advocacy of franchise team, ‘The Buccaneers’, for which Charlie has been nominated this week. His open and approachable nature make him well-suited to this role, something to be proud of. Well done, Charlie!
From the English Department – Russian Revolution exhibition at the British Library
Mrs Trevitt writes… Year 6 are currently enjoying our latest novel, ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell. The boys have been looking in to the role of political satire as well as the genre of fable and making links with the history of the Russian Revolution. The boys have prepared some super presentations on the Russian Revolution so far! Due to the constraints of a jam packed summer term, we are unfortunately unable to take them to the latest exhibition at the British Library - ‘Russian Revolution: Hope, Tragedy, Myths’, which is running until Tuesday 29th August 2017. http://www.bl.uk/events/russian-revolution-hope-tragedy-myths ‘From the fall of Russia’s last Tsar to the rise of the first communist state, this definitive exhibition takes a fresh look at the Russian Revolution 100 years on. With rarely seen items from both sides of the conflict – from a first edition of the Communist Manifesto to anti-Bolshevik propaganda – this is a unique chance to understand the lesser-known personal stories behind the events that changed the world. Also on display for the first time, from the British Library’s own archive: Lenin’s handwritten application for a Reader Pass. Uniting the political and the personal, explore the Russian Revolution’s central characters, most notably Lenin and Trotsky, alongside the tales of ordinary people living through extraordinary times. Did events in Russia in 1917 transform the international landscape forever? Did they shape the world we live in today? Bringing to life the hope, tragedy and myths of this seismic revolution, discover Russia 1917 – the biggest flame in a world on fire.’ – The British Library If you can this summer term, we highly recommend paying a visit to this exhibition for all Year 6 boys: to enrich their learning and provide further insight in to the political, cultural and social context of our class novel.

From Charities - Wetherby’s Got Talent!
Miss Martin writes… Last Friday saw the premier of ‘Wetherby’s Got Talent’ for the Lower School. The wide variety of acts that performed in the competition was particularly impressive and huge congratulations to those boys who took part. We look forward to next year’s competition! The judging panel deliberated long and hard about the overall winner but came up with the following: 3rd place – Saif Meliti and Sami Kymisis who performed a beautiful rendition of Sean Mendes’s ‘Stitches’ 2nd place – Rory McConnon singing ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ 1st place – Zac Shuaib whose dancing impressed the whole room immensely – he could definitely be seen in ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ in the future! A few comments from the judges… Mr Brawn: ‘It is so refreshing to see that ‘talent’ at Wetherby is not restricted to Music. The musical acts were obviously outstanding, but what a variety of talent we have at WPS. Every one of the boys (and staff) who performed had such stage presence and a genuine communication with their audience. Well done to you all.’ Mrs King: ‘It was such great fun being a judge on the ‘Wetherby’s Got Talent’ panel last week- who knew we had such talented boys in the Lower School?! The range of acts were so diverse so it was really hard to choose an overall winner. Massive congratulations to all the boys who took part; I know we all thoroughly enjoyed the event.’ Miss Olney: ‘Wetherby’s Got Talent was a real success last Friday and I was blown away by the talent of the Lower School boys. From rapping to singing to dancing to magic tricks, the boys wowed the judges with their acts. As such, it was a really tough competition to judge and the boys should feel immensely proud of performing in front of the whole Lower School and all their teachers. Well done, boys!’
Miss Phoenix ‘I was completely blown away by all the incredible talent on show at Wetherby's Got Talent. We were treated to spine-tingling singing performances, jaw-dropping magic tricks, phenomenal street dancing, side-splitting comedy and so much more. All of the participants did an amazing job, and they should be very proud. I am already looking forward to Wetherby's Got Talent 2018!’ We also had a home clothes day last Friday, and together, with Wetherby’s Got Talent, we raised over £1200 for our school charities which is a great effort! Well done, boys!

Swimming Gala
Mr Bayes writes.... The Wetherby Swim Team recorded a resounding victory at Caldicott on Thursday evening swimming against some stiff boarding school competition. The squad kicked off the gala with some strong performances in the individual medley section, with Michael Kupsin, Nicholas Finch, Sebastian Moscoso and Joshua Ruimy displaying some sublime skills to take the early lead in the gala. The individual strokes then followed with the team building on their lead with some very close finishes against their main competitor, Ludgrove. With the points narrowly favouring Ludgrove through the medley relay section, Wetherby pulled
out the stops in the front crawl relay to secure a fantastic victory. If ever a team needed to come together as a squad, to encourage and support each other to get over the line, then our boys gasped that opportunity and showed real camaraderie and team spirit to achieve their goal. From a coach’s perspective, it was very satisfying to see so many boys operating at their very best. Final result Wetherby 1st Ludgrove 2nd Caldicott 3rd Horris Hill 4th
Week 27 Fixtures
Well done to all those boys who represented the school recently in the various fixtures, home and away. Playing sports and representing the school is such an important feature of life at Wetherby Prep. As a result, we wanted to reflect this in a motto that we can all share and believe in… Play with vigour, play with pride Play with joy right by your side Be inspired, be the one Know you can, and overcome.

From the Performance Corner – Probiotics, what are they?
Mr McClinton writes…
Consuming a wholesome healthy diet supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria allowing it to flourish. Our body contains roughly 100 trillion bacteria; 10 times the number of cells in our body. Probiotics help support optimal digestion and absorption of nutrients. They also produce vitamins, absorb minerals and aid in the elimination of toxins. The ideal ratio between friendly and unfriendly bacteria in our gut is roughly 85 percent good to 15 percent bad. Being mindful about our diet, avoiding processed foods and considering locally grown organic produce does make a significant difference. Refined, processed sugar actually feeds unfriendly gut flora that may reside in your gut as a result of poor diet and lifestyle choices. An example of poor lifestyle and food choices include:
High sugar/fructose
Refined grains e.g. white pasta
Processed foods
Antibiotics
Unfiltered drinking water
Agricultural chemicals/pesticides
Pollution
The following symptoms suggest unhealthy bacteria may reside in your gut:
Bloating/persistent nausea
constipation/diarrhoea
persistent headaches
persistent fatigue
sugar/refined carb cravings
The gut, brain, immune system connection
80 percent of the immune system is located in the digestive system. The gut quite literally is our second brain. It originates from the same type of tissue as the brain. During foetal development, one part turns into the central nervous system whilst the other develops into the nervous system. These two systems are
connected via the vagus nerve, a cranial nerve running from the brain stem down to the abdomen. The gut and brain work in tandem. Intestinal health can therefore have a profound influence on our mental health.
Optimizing gut flora
Help ensure optimal gut flora by regularly consuming traditionally fermented foods. Healthy options include:
Lassi (Indian yoghurt)
Kefir (fermented raw milk)
Natto (fermented soy)
Tempeh (fermented soybeans)
Kimchee (fermented vegetables) Avoid pasteurized versions. Pasteurization destroys many of the naturally occurring probiotics. They also typically contain added sugars, high fructose corn syrup, dyes and artificial sweeteners. I am happy to answer any questions or address a topic of interest. Do email me with any questions at [email protected].

Lucas (6J) and Joshua (4B) Linnane on an epic trip to China
Lucas Linnane writes… During our trip to China over the school break, we visited a middle school in a small town a few hours’ drive from Shanghai. It was a fun language and cultural exchange. We introduced ourselves in Chinese (with a few mistakes) and they asked us questions in English, which we tried to answer in Chinese with some English mixed in. Their English was definitely better than our Chinese! It really surprised me that they read the same books that we read, such as Harry Potter.
They also knew some History facts we are studying. One boy asked me whether I thought William the Conqueror was a good or bad person. There were so many students wanting to talk to us it was nearly impossible to move. You could tell they were all enjoying themselves. I had an amazing time practising my Chinese with native speakers too! It was quite a humbling experience realizing while we only have to go to school from 8:30am to 4pm, whereas their school day lasts from 6am till 10pm! Despite the long hours, they all looked happy and not at all tired!
Never fear, Felix is here! Last Saturday, Felix W (4K) passed the Junior Lifeguard swim test on Venice Beach with miles of water to spare. He swam the 100 yard test with a PB of 1:34 and has now qualified to be a junior lifeguard this summer at Venice Beach. More than 1000 children took part in the swim test and a great weekend was had by all. After his success in the water, Felix was able to visit his Grandfather and Aunt who live in California. A huge treat for all since they live so far apart. The whole family is now looking forward to summer at the beach and are all very proud of Felix. Well, done Felix!
In form time this week, lucky 4K heard all about Felix’s amazing trip and his swimming test success. Thanks, Felix!
