Guessing Digit
&
Uncertainty
• What is the difference
between these two measuring
tools?How to:
1. Identify the increment, Ex 0.1 ml
2. Take the increment and divide by 2, Ex. 0.1/2 = 0.05
3. Estimate the meaurement using the graduations (lines) on the tool. You are allowed one guessing digit beyond the place value of the graduation. Thus, it is definitely 2.5 (top ruler) However, you can guess one more digit. Thus, the answer goes to one more place value.

Access via Teams: General: Assignments or via Conversations
Practice: Reading
Measurements
•Activity: Work with a peer on a big
copy of one of these instruments. Write
•Increment
•Uncertainty
•Measurement (with UNITS)
•Assignment: Complete the worksheet
(on One Note or on hard copy)
•DUE: end of class on Thursday
•If necessary, take time at home to complete the assignment.
•Assignment is graded based on
student attempt and corrections.

Significant FiguresMath Concept
Understanding Sig Figs will help you know "where
to round" during calculations using measurements.
Significant Figures
2 Basic Rules
And all other times, each number is
significant to showing the accuracy.
Remember, sig figs help us know
where to round if the measurement
is used in a calculation.
ConversionsMath Concept
Conversions is multiplying what appears to
be "fractions" which we call, equivalents, in
chemistry.
5 Steps to Solving
Conversions
(1) know what are equivalents
(2) know what information is given
(3) identify what to solve for
(4) set up the problem
(5) Solve as if you were multiplying fractions.
However, they need to ROUND their answer using sig figs.
Conversions
• One of the measurements utilized a measuring tape. What units was the measurement in? What SI unit should the unit be converted to?
• HOW do you set up conversions between DIFFERENT units?
• How do you set up conversions between the SAME unit?
Conversions
This is the basic idea to
conversions though
sometimes you may have
multiple steps to get where
you want.
Problem:
How many seconds are
there in a year?
Conversion withIN the same unit.
Conversions between
the SAME unit.
There way and MY way
- make everything equal to 1 meter
NOTE: then the values equal each
other. Ex. 100 cm = 1 m and 0.001
km = 1 m.... thus, 100 cm: 0.001 km
.
