News this week… Ungarie Central School sent two Primary Basketball teams into West Wyalong on Monday. The girls played some fantastic basketball, unfortunately going down in a tough one 23-16. The boys faced incredibly tough opposition and got rolled 81 – 9. Thanks go to Justine Henley for coaching our teams and Mrs Payne for being our team manager. On Tuesday, some lucky students from Years 3 – 6 got to go to Wagga Wagga and watch the Sheffield Shield game between New South Wales and Victoria. From all reports, the game was action packed and even included a hat trick! Our students got to collect a few autographs and get up close to people they would normally see on TV. Awesome!
We also had the Beyond Blue Roadshow come to visit UCS. There were a number of support people there to discuss all things mental health, provide confidential advice and also provide some delicious pancakes! We really value our partnership with Bland Shire Council for making these services available to us! Mr Cattle also took a team of Ungarie swimmers to Lake Cargelligo for some representative swimming. At the time of publishing all results were unknown, but I have heard whispers that Molly and Hugh dominated, Kadee was outstanding and our relay swimmers were very impressive! Advertisements This week we have published our advertisements for our Assistant Principal and Head Teacher positions. These advertisements will be open for 2 weeks. I’m looking forward to getting the best possible staff permanently employed at UCS! See you soon!

Secondary How2Learn Session – Interdependence
On Monday, Years 7-10 gathered in the library to kick off their How2Learn sessions for Term 1. This session was aimed at making students aware of how to use their “interdependence” muscles when completing learning activities. We discussed the meaning of the term, and came up with a group definition, and identified reasons why it is a good muscle to flex when learning. Our activities for this session were outside, with students firstly selecting their own team to be a part of for the activities (making an informed decision about who they will work with best), and then teams tackling the activities together. The activities were chosen to make students think hard about not just teaming up with their friends, but with people who have a specific set of skills that will help their team complete the challenges. The photo’s below show students having a go at the jingly spider web and the lean in/out challenge.

Primary Sport It has been a big week of sport at UCS. On Monday our basketball teams competed against West Wyalong. Both teams played admirably and were gracious in defeat. On Tuesday a group of Year 3-6 students went to Wagga to watch the Sheffield Shield. It was an exciting day with many signatures obtained and some great catches on our side of the field. Congratulations to our swimmers who competed at the LLPSSA Carnival yesterday. From all reports all students tried their best and did us proud. Special congratulations to Hugh Williams and Molly Bryant who were age champions. Fantastic!
The ‘Pop’ test allows students to identify that a chemical
reaction has occurred because a gas has been produced;
this is one of the five signs they are learning to look for.
We created a reaction that produced small amounts of
hydrogen gas, which produces a quick flash of flame and
a shrieking noise when a lit splint is placed in the mouth
of the test tube. Seth and Josh were able to capture the
moment that the gas and flame met using a Slow‐Pro
app on their iPod – otherwise it’s nearly too quick to
see!
Students have been learning all about physical and chemical changes this term. We have
looked at the differences between a physical and a chemical change, and have performed
experiments to observe these differences. This week, our focus has been on identifying a
chemical change. We have had some fun with this concept, performing the ‘pop’ test
several times, as well as setting up an experiment to observe which factors have the most
impact on the rusting of steel wool.
