Week 5, Term 2 19/05/2020 Dear Parents, This week will be our last week of remote learning unless the circumstances regarding Covid-19 change. It has certainly been a huge learning curve for students, staff and parents as we have learnt so many new skills particularly in the area of IT. These skills will not be lost and the students will continue to use many of these skills in their learning when they return to school. Thank you to our parents, who have been abiding by the health regulations and dropping off and picking up their children at the gate. It has been made clear to us by the health authorities that students at school pose very little risk to each other. The most likely cause of infection from Covid-19 is from adults who enter the school which is why we have severely reduced the number of adults who enter our school. After the Covid-19 case being detected in Rockhampton, Health authorities are urging anyone with respiratory symptoms such as a cough, sore throat or shortness of breath to get tested. In light of this advice, one of our staff members, who was experiencing cold like symptoms, was tested for Covid-19 yesterday. She has returned a negative result and will return to school once she is symptom free. It is with much excitement that I can report that the sprinkler system on our oval has now been completed and the students can once again play in this area. We will be planting out some lawn seed and look forward to seeing the area greening up and starting to resemble a decent soccer field. I am hopeful that the basketball court will be completed by the end of the week so that this wonderful new area is available for our students to use when they return next week. In other exciting news, the Charles Family welcome a new baby girl this week. Congratulations to Kathy, Athol, Damon, Tobias, Lincoln and Amie on the arrival of little Roxanna Constance! YEAR P/1 CLASS

Hi everyone, It has been so wonderful to welcome back the P/1 class to Depot Hill. We have noticed an improvement in all students’ letter and sound knowledge so well done to all of our Mums and Dads who have done a wonderful job keeping learning happening at home! We are continuing to look at traditional stories and particularly retelling the beginning, middle and end of a story. We are also asking students to find a part in the story that reminds them of something that has happened to them and to find the message in a story. Our students are all doing a wonderful job with their writing and most are starting to use appropriate initial sounds when trying to write words. Some very clever students can even sound out 3 letter words!

In Mathematics, we continue to use the numbers from 1-10 when counting and are beginning to work on counting backwards from 10-1. Parents might like to count backwards from 10 as you wait for students to complete small jobs such as putting on shoes. We are also classifying objects in different ways eg. colour, size, type.

Our Science unit this term is discussing living and non-living things. We have been having lots of fun looking at insects and discovering all of the different types of insects that there are. I wonder what insects you could discover in your back yard?

I hope you are enjoying reading with your child each night. It is such an important part of your child’s learning journey!

Have a great week. Mrs Elizabeth Jacobson & Mrs Julie Easey

YEAR 1/2 CLASS

Hi everyone, Nearly halfway through the term already! English As you know, our unit this term is on procedures. A procedure tells us how to do something. Last week’s procedure was “How to make a sculpture” (students loved using Plaster of Paris) and this week’s procedure is “How to make playdough”. This will be the final procedure we look at before moving into preparing for the assessment which is “How to make a disgusting sandwich”.

On Friday morning we did our weekly writing session. Students had to say which app was their favourite and why. Here are some of the answers:

“My favourite app is Reading Eggs because it is fun and it helps me learn.” – Halana “My favourite app is IXL because I like going up to 100 and I get badges when we get it right. We move up to 100.” – Maliyah-Rae

“My favourite app is Reading Eggs because I got gold eggs. I got 349 eggs.” –

Jordyn

“My favourite app is Spelling City because I like playing Hang Mouse.” –

Adalita

“My favourite app is Reading Eggs because it has fun games. It is so fun. I have 834 eggs.” – Jayde

Maths We will continue on with reading data and graphs and of course our routine activities on number facts, place value etc. It’s wonderful to see students coming along with their number facts. Students have made lots of progress using IXL – we have now answered 8944 questions – wow!!!

Have wonderful week!

Be Strong…. Be resilient Our New Normal

Following on a little from last week, moving forward to a new normal, let me begin with an interesting fact…. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco can move up to six metres in either direction at its centre. All of its parts including its concrete roadway, steel railing, and crossbeams, are connected from one welded joint to another through the vast cable system to two great towers, then down to a rock foundation beneath the Pacific.

This week I have become aware of how people’s expectations can cause stress and even bring friendships to an end. When we expect something from others, and this expectation is not met, we can become sad, angry, and frustrated, and we will hear ourselves saying “they should or shouldn’t have done that”. Often, we become very stuck and rigid in our thinking, not willing to accept another’s perspective. And, rather than letting go a little (sway like the bridge), we hold tighter to what we think “should be” rather than embrace “what could be”. In other words, our minds and relationships can get stuck, in our normal, as we want to remain in control. During this season, if we want to be like The Golden Gate Bridge, which has survived a century of earthquakes because it was built strong and flexible, maybe we …

Could Let Go a Little of What Should Be & Continue Forward to

A New Normal To Ponder: Intentionally losing a game of rock, paper, scissors is just as hard as trying to win.
