Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Readings for Ordinary Time
“Repeat sinners” that is what we are by nature. There exists within
man a selfish desire to have creature comforts, security, long life, and admiration from others coupled with an exalted belief in our own self-worth. These attributes are a result of original sin. The inclination to repeatedly sin, even after forgiveness has been granted, rests in pride, possessions and power – the unholy traits utilized by Satan to bring about the Fall. The reason mankind can so easily deceive himself is due to rationalization. This ability to convince ourselves into doing what is appealing yet self-destructive is based in this Divine gift of love. “If it feels good, do it!” over powers the need for sacrifice for true advancement and true love. Unfortunately, the cure for this weakness is found in a transformation of self that must take place only after repentance and realization that we cannot do it by ourselves. Fortunately, we were created by a Being who is pure Love. This Creator, when approached with repentance, will avert His justified anger and grant forgiveness. Thus, despite our continual failing, the Creator has unceasingly bestowed forgiveness when repentance
occurs and we humbly and sincerely attempt a reformation.
In the Book of Exodus, God’s Chosen People, whom He has delivered from slavery, have reverted to pagan practices by worshipping a golden calf reminiscent of the Egyptian god, Apis. While Moses is talking with God, the ancient Hebrews found themselves abandoning their God. The people rationalize that God was taking too long to give them what they had expected and He had allowed them to endure hardships that were unjustified in their minds. This abandonment of theirs causes the Lord to desire to deliver a just punishment to them and start over; however, Moses intercedes and reasons that the Lord should not waste the effort and abrogate the promises that He had made to Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. Moses argues the innate self-worth that God had bestowed upon them. This intercession was successful and the Chosen People were given another chance for their transformation to take place. Called to repentance, the Chosen People
responded affirmatively and continued their journey with their God.
The wisdom of God giving chances is expressed in the second reading from the 1st Letter of St. Paul to Timothy. Paul reminds Timothy that Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, was himself a blasphemer, persecutor and arrogant human being who had rationalized his own actions. These extremely sinful actions did not stop God from converting him into a disciple that would be influential in spreading the Good News. Paul confirms for Timothy that it was only through the grace, faith and love of Jesus that this transformation took place. The mercy Paul found was available to all who approached God through Jesus, the Lord and Master of all. The Divine desire to extend mercy
only required an effort on the part of the sinner. God would do the rest.
This same attitude of repentance and transformation coupled with the Divine desire to recover and restore His creation to its intended status is the subject of today’s lengthy Gospel selection. In today’s liturgy, Jesus highlights the joy that is found when a sinner repents and is welcomed back by God. Christ begins with an example of a shepherd seeking a lost sheep, follows that example with a woman searching for a lost coin, and culminates his point with the parable of the Prodigal Son. All three parables reflect the Divine Plan to seek and restore that which was lost. Of the three, the Prodigal Son parable epitomizes the Divine desire to reclaim the fallen and restore the lost to their originally
intended status.
In the parable, there are three main characters whose actions demonstrate the problematic situation in which mankind finds himself. It is through careful analysis of all the characters that the Divine desire
to have God’s creation return to Him is unveiled. Using the ancient inheritance tradition, Jesus clearly illustrates the needed attributes for re-establishing the proper relationship with God. In ancient times, sons would be given a portion of the father’s estate upon his death according to the order of birth and the obedience to the father’s will during his lifetime. Interestingly, the youngest son in the story is irresponsible and anxious. He wants his share, now! This is problematic because he is demanding something that cannot easily or justly be determined because the inheritance should be based upon the worth of the estate at the time of death. Despite this illogical request, the father gives the boy his wish. The boy immediately separates himself from his family and lives a life of debauchery and sin. After he wastes his inheritance and experiences extremely bad times, he realizes that he has destroyed his life and that slaves in his father’s house were better off than he was. It is this realization coupled with remorse and repentance that allows him to change his attitude and head home – asking not for reinstatement as a son but rather as a servant. The father, representing God, has allowed his son to experience this hardship in order that he may grow. He unconditionally loves his son and longs for his return. Witnessing the transformation that has taken place, the father welcomes him back and orders a banquet and fine clothing for the boy who had been “lost” to the family. In essence, he restores the boy to his original status without punishment or degradation. However, the eldest and obedient son has a different reaction that plays a pivotable role in the parable. This son, representing people that are obedient to God’s law, learns of the joyful readmittance of the younger to the family and the reinstatement of his status as an equal heir. He becomes jealous and offended by the mercy shown. He refuses to join the banquet because he claims it is unfair, unjust, and an insult to his hard work, dedication and obedience. Despite the pleas of the father, the eldest son hardens his heart and separates himself from the family celebration. He points out the indignity that his younger brother had shown to the family and cul-ture through his selfish and sinful conduct. He claims that a celebration and reinstatement is inappropriate and is not merited. Jesus purposefully does not tell us how this new problem is resolved. Has the tide turned and the elder son, through his own hubris, separated himself from the joys of the family? Or does the son accept the Father’s rationale that, at all times, everything he had was available to him for the asking, causing him to enter the banquet and celebrate? Christ’s point is simple – the Father loves all and will forgive all who repent but so should all in the Kingdom of God because all are in need
of Divine Mercy.
Holy Mother the Church reminds all Christians that a transformation of one’s self must take place in all the children of God. For those who immediately reject their Divine Family and squander their inheritance, they can approach the loving Father and gain readmittance if their repentance and actions reflect the needed change of character. Likewise, followers of Christ must be willing to show that same selflessness and forgiveness to their repentant brothers and sisters in order to experience the joy of recovering the “lost sheep” or the finding the lost coin. Recognizing their own faults and humbly placing themselves at the Will of Father is the only way they will enter the eternal banquet, too. Jesus emphasizes in the Prodigal Son parable that no person can earn their way into God’s graces. His mercy is for Him to bestow and all are loved equally by Him. To be a true Christian requires humility and obedience in order for the love of the Divine to shine brightly. The Children of the Light must focus on their own
transformation in the world and leave the lost to God and His Mercy.

In the nineteenth century, Andrew Kim Taegon,
the son of Christian converts, traveled 1300 miles
from his native Korea to a seminary in China and
became the first native Korean priest. At the time,
Korea refused any contact with the outside world
except China. Christianity found its way into
Korea beforehand and there were very few Catholics. Before St. Andrew's time,
a Chinese priest came to Korea finding only about 4000 Catholics who had never
seen a priest. Back home again in Korea, Andrew was assigned to arrange the
transport of more missionaries into Korea. He was caught, arrested, tortured
and beheaded. Paul, a devout lay apostle, met the same fate. Ninety-eight Korean
Catholics were also tortured and put to death. Pope John Paul II canonized them
during his visit there.
