Week One August 29, 2016 Welcome! This week... It will be a wonderfully busy first week of school. We will discuss and practice our rules, routines, and procedures of the classroom and school. We will meet many friends, and become familiar with our classroom community. We will review many skills, including: •Sight words and alphabet activities • Reading at individual levels, including comprehension of text and strategies for reading unknown words. We will read many books about going to school, making good choices, and enjoying new friends. These include: David Goes to School; No, David! Welcome!

This week... It will be a wonderfully busy first week of school. We will discuss and practice our rules, routines, and procedures of the classroom and school. We will meet many friends, and become familiar with our classroom community.

We will review many skills, including:

•Sight words and alphabet activities

• Reading at individual levels, including comprehension of text and strategies for reading unknown words.

We will read many books about going to school, making good choices, and enjoying new friends. These include:

Social StudiesThis week we will discuss the school and classroom as a 'community'. This includes:

✦Getting along with others- what it means to be a great classmate

✦The terms 'rule' 'group' and 'school'

✦Why we need to have and follow rules

✦How we work together as a community

MathThis week we will complete the following skills:

✦Counting practice (by 2s, 5s, and 10s)

✦Daily Routines to practice number sense- including, adding numbers to ten, even vs. odd numbers, place value and base 10, writing tally marks, and money (coins)

✦Weather routines

✦Calendar Routines

Homework Information•Homework in math will begin in the first couple weeks of school. They will be in a packet in the red folder. Look for the page number written in your child's agenda to help them complete the correct assignment. Please return the packet daily!

•Baggie Books for Reading will also begin shortly. See the note in Baggie for directions.

•We will generally have homework Monday - Thursday. It will be written in your child's agenda. Also, spelling words will be attached to the agenda on Mondays. There will be an optional spelling assignment due each week by Friday. This is a bonus for students to earn stamps in their cards.

Reminders

• Please check your child's backpack, empty homework folders and read the agenda daily. This is how we can best communicate with each other. You can write any notes in the agenda- I check it daily.

• Don't forget to sign up for Remind! To text, send @24hgah to the # 81010. If you don't text, but have email, send a message to the address [email protected]. This will be my main way to communicate besides agendas.

• You may send in snack whenever you would like. See note in homework folder for details.
