The SWAC welcomes two new head coaches in 2010, and with the departure of Southern’s Pete Richardson, Anthony Jones at Alabama A&M now becomes the “dean” of SWAC coaches as the longest tenured head coach in the conference. Jones is entering his 9th season with the Bulldogs.

Replacing Richardson at Southern is Stump Mitchell, and replacing Willie Totten at Mississippi Valley State is Karl Morgan.

Grambling defensive end Christian Anthony has been named national Peseason Defensive Player of the year by College Sporting News for NCAA Div. I-FCS. The selection was made prior to Anthony’s heart attack that has his playing status in question for 2010, but CSN is honoring its choice. The MEAC / SWAC Challenge, pre-sented by Disney is an annual foot-ball game between the two histori-cally black college conferences that are NCAA Division I-FCS members, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwestern Ath-letic Conference (SWAC). This year’s Labor Day weekend event pitting Delaware State against Southern in Orlando’s Florida Citrus Bowl.

The game will be carried live on ESPN on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 11:00 a.m. (CT). Alabama A&M’s Ulysses Banks, who led the SWAC with 1123 yards as a senior in 2009, is the only top rusher not back in 2010.

• Prairie View’s current eight-game winning streak is tied with Penn for the second longest in the nation. Only Villanova’s nine-game streak is longer entering the 2010 season.

• Seven of last season’s top 10 attended games in NCAA I-FCS featured SWAC teams. Five of those seven top games were conference games. • Grambling’s Christian An-thony is the career leader among current NCAA I-FCS players in fumbles forced. Anthony has 12 career forces, which is three more than any other player in the nation.

• Prairie View A&M quarterback K.J. Black is the career leader among current NCAA I-FCS play-ers in passing efficiency. Black’s rating of 153.87 for his career is less than a point ahead of Mon-tana’s Andrew Selle.

• UAPB’s Mareo Howard led the nation last year averaging 31.0 yards per kickoff return.

• Southern’s Jason House led the nation last year averaging .91 interceptions per game.

• Alcorn State is the only SWAC school playing an opponent this week that is not making its season debut. Langston de-feated Incarnate Word 28-10 in its season opener Saturday. The Lions made the NAIA playoffs a year ago.
