Death and life is in the power of the tongue. Our words have tremendous power for good or for evil for life or for death. This is because our ability to speak and communicate reflects the divine image we bear. God speaks the world into existence and the church grows as the word of God spreads. In this series we will look at the power of words and how to use them for good.

From Fr. JC Maximilian’s Desk “More Than Words, Week 2:
Words Give Direction to Our Life”
This is the second week in our message series, “More Than Words.” This series is exploring the power of the words we speak. Our words have great power, shaping the way that we look at life, and greatly influencing the people around us.
However, too often we dismiss or diminish the power of words. Often we speak without really thinking about what we are saying because we discount effect of our words. The truth is that words have incredible power. They can hurt us and wound us, damage and destroy. On the other hand, the properly placed word can bring healing and health, refreshment, renewal, and encouragement to the soul. It is only fitting that our words have such power because we are made in the image and likeness of God. In the Book of Genesis, God is described as speaking the universe into existence. God spoke, and it happened. In St. John’s Gospel, Jesus is described as “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Last week, we looked at some of the ways our words can bring death. There is lying and manipulation, gossip and slander, murmuring and complaining and lots of other negative ways we can speak. We noted that these are a reflection of our heart. This week we want to look at how, sometimes, a key word, the right word, a well placed word, remain with us through many seasons of life, can clarify the direction of our life. Today’s message is that instead of allowing other people’s words set the direction of our life, we can choose the words giving direction to our life, specifically we can choose to allow God’s word give our life direction. Today as a Church we celebrate Jesus’ Ascension. Again Jesus is preparing the Apostles for his going away. Instead of the fear and disillusionment that they felt as Jesus prepared them for his crucifixion, now they worship Jesus, in spite of still having some doubts. Before ascending to heaven, Jesus gives the Apostles, and us, some words which will set the direction of their lives, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matt. 28: 19-20). With those words, the Apostles spent the rest of their lives preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ, making disciples of Jesus everywhere they went. And their work continues today through the ministry of the Church. God’s word wants to have that kind of impact in all of our lives. This week, spend some time – 10 to 15 minutes – identifying a verse or story from Scripture that speaks to you helps you to clarify the direction and work of your life or the season of your life you’re in. Words have power. God’s word has God’s power. Use it.

MORE THAN WORDS
Week Two – “Last Words” The Gospel of Matthew depicts the scene of Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. Before Jesus ascends he gathers the 11 remaining loyal apostles and gives them his final instructions. He gives them their mission and their focus. When the Church stays focus on these words, it succeeds but when it forgets them, it goes wrong. The same is true of our lives when we have a few words that clearly define our purpose and our mission. In this week, we will encourage members of the parish to find words or verses from Scripture that are their key verse for their lives that give direction to their lives. What do we want them to know? Words have power to clarify the direction of our lives. They have the power to give us a sense of mission and focus. What do we want them to do? Identify a Scripture verse that will be the focus of their lives

WAYS FAMILIES CAN COPE DURING STAY-AT-HOME ORDERS
When I was younger I loved being active. When my parents needed to discipline me I always dreaded two forms – the belt and being grounded. I figured when I grow up I would never need to worry about either of those forms of discipline. Well, wrong again. Since the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States and each state gradually enforced stay-at-home orders, I feel like a kid who is grounded. Fortunately, there were things I learned to do to make the best of the situation. Today, also, there are things we can do as families to make the best of this situation, which can be very stressful. We can even do things that we may never have done had the pandemic not hit. Dr. Jeffrey Staab, a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist suggested a few ways for families to cope during this stressful time.
1. Stay Connected and Disconnected – Keep up with and stay connected to the Big 3 (Faith,
Family and Friends) . Faith – Celebrate Mass together as a family, pray together, read and
discuss the Bible or other spiritual reading. Family and Friends – Stay connected by calling
or connecting with loved ones through Facetime, Skype or other online methods.
Stay disconnected by setting limits on social media and the news – pick just a few
favorites and limit the time.
2. Maintain healthy habits – Use a planner of some sort and keep a regular schedule
especially for bedtime and sleep, wake times, meals and healthy activity or exercise.
3. Manage your thinking – When feeling stressed ask How? (not Why?) How is this
affecting me? How has this changed me? Pick answers that you can control and take
action. For example, if you are staying up late watching news then this affects your sleep,
mood, production the next day and family life. This is within your power to fix.
4. Mind your manners – Disrespect, uncontrolled anger, frustration and impatience promote
stress. Work on being patient, kind, and helpful. Do a simple act of kindness to a family
member. It’s hard to feel stress when you are trying to do acts of kindness.
Dr. Staab has some insightful suggestions. There are many more too. I hope to share these with you over the next number of weeks. May God Bless you!

Good Counsel Homes was originally founded to address the needs of homeless, pregnant women in New York in 1985. Four homes are currently operational in the New York Metropolitan Area and in South Jersey. Since formation, Good Counsel has had 1,219 babies born to resident moms, 15 just this year so far. Our mothers can stay a year or longer after their baby is born. While in residence mothers have earned their GEDs, and graduated from Nursing School, Culinary School, Real Estate School, and Clinical Nursing Programs. Other Moms have attended community and county colleges, and other work related programs while working part time or full time jobs. Staffed 24/7, Good Counsel provides a family like atmosphere with all residents sharing the responsibilities of taking care of the home. Our mothers participate in a Life Skills Program with weekly classes on nutrition, post/pre-natal education, general parenting, chastity, spirituality, finances, job preparedness, and health and computer skills. The goal of all Good Counsel Homes is to help find the residents full time employment, safe and secure housing and to become financially and physically independent while becoming contributing members of society. If you are interested in contributing to our mission in Pro-life ministry and breaking the cycle of homelessness , please consider becoming a monthly donor by calling 201.795.0637, visit our website www.goodcounselhomes.org. We thank you for your faithful prayerful and financial support as we do what Jesus asks us to do… “to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and shelter the homeless.” God bless you.
