As human-centered designers, its important to embrace your beginners mind; toapproach problems as a novice even when you already know a lot about them. Yourbeginners mind is eager to learn and willing to experiment! Take a ew minutes to answerthe questions below and then discuss your answers with your team. Be sure to tap intoyour beginners mind or the last question below.
1) What is your name?
2) Where do you work?
3) Why are you taking this course?
4) What would you like to learn during the course?
5) What would you like to be doing in 5 years?
6) Tell a story about the last activity that you tried or the rst time? Was it exciting or scary? How did being a novice help you?

Each workshop is scheduled to last two
hours. Youll have about 1-2 hours o
readings each week in advance o the
Workshop. Ater Weeks 2+4, youll have
homework assignments as you prac tice
the human-centered design process in
your community.
Cd
Plot the workshop sessions on a
calendar. Mark dates that membersmight miss and plan accordingly or
reschedule. You will be conducting
community research in Weeks 2 and 4.
Weekend meetings might be best or
these two sessions.
SpcTry to secure a meeting space or the
ull 5 weeks o the workshop. Can you
hold the weekly workshop at someones
house, your school, oce, church?
ldship
Each week, a member o your team
will serve as the Weekly Leader. This
person will lead the weekly discussion
and acilitate the various activities. They
are also responsible or coordinating
with team members to bring required
supplies.
S gud us
We recommend that your group takes
a moment to set a ew rules or normsor how you would like the weekly
workshops to unction. Here are some
questions to get you going:
- How can you structure the weekly
workshop to ensure that an
environment o mutual trust and
respect is created?
- How should eedback (both positive
and negative) be communicated so
that each individual and the group get
the most out o it?
- Are there other rules that you canthink o which will make the weekly
workshops run more smoothly?
Suppis
Each team member should print out the
Workshop Guide and bring it to each
meeting. Remember, it isn't necessary
to print out the Weekly Readings, just
the Workshop Guide.
The Weekly Leader will be responsible
or organizing with the team to provide:
- Pens, pencils, markers, blank paper
- Post-it notes i theyre available;
i not, cut scrap paper into squares andbring tape to stick them on
the wall.
During Weeks 4+5, your team will
need to gather and bring protoptyping
supplies to the meeting. You'll get more
details later on this.

We've created a Google+ Community

design. The second reading ("Design-Thinking or

as well as the third reading ("Clean Team Case Study")
provided you with specic examples o how the
human-centered design process has been used to

The best way to begin learning the human-centered design process is to do it ourselves. Divideinto groups o two people. I your workshop team has an odd number o people, one group canhave three people. Interview your partner and then switch. Someone should be keeping track otime and keeping the group on schedule with each portion o the activity.

Congratulations on designing a great solution! Normally, you would continue to iterate on youridea, reconsidering elements o your design based on eedback you receive rom the community.Because time is growing short in this week's workshop, let's take a ew minutes to refect on what youlearned during this mini-challenge and during Week 1 as a whole.
rfTake 5 minutes to individually refect on the
ollowing questions and write your responses down
quickly in your notebook or on some Post-it notes:
What eedback did you get rom the other design
team during the "Reality Check"? Did your design
change as a result?
Based upon your experience during this mini
design challenge, why might the human-centered
design process be a useul problem solving
methodology or tackling larger social sector
challenges?
Acumen has a practice o sharing Ahas on
a regular basis. It is a way to refect on an
experience and gain more insight into both
the world around you and yoursel. "Ahas" can
be key takeaways, new perspectives on an issue,
memorable comments or questions, surprises,
challenges, or parting thoughts rom thisworkshop. Write down a ew Ahas.
shaNow come together with your ull workshop group:
Share your prototype with the group. Do you have
ideas or urther rening your idea based upon
the eedback you received?
Share and discuss your Ahas with the group.
Were there similar or dierent takeaways?
