INSIDERS & OUTSIDERS
• Get into a few small groups at your seats. NO MORE THAN 4 people per group. Someone should volunteer to take notes to post on his/her blog.
• Take a BRIEF inventory of the cultures you belong to.
• In a group discover any “common cultures” that you share (you’re MSU students, but what else are you?). What marks you as “insiders” in that culture? How can you tell when someone is an “outsider”?
• You have 30 minutes.
An artifact:
…is a human-made thing.
…does not have to be old.
…tells us about who we are, who we were, who we might become.
…will be left behind when we are gone, to be interpreted by someone else.
Two Facts:
1. OTHER HUMANS WILL MAKE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT US BASED ON THE ARTIFACTS WE MAKE AND USE (AND UNMAKE AND MISUSE).
2. Writing is an artifact.
ARTIFACTS AND ASSUMPTIONS.
1. What is the context of this artifact? What was going on in the world when this
artifact came into the world?
2. What CAN this artifact be used for?• Not just what it is used for. Not just its primary
purpose. What else can it do? What else can we MAKE it do?
3. What cultures are associated with this artifact?• Who made this and why? Whom did they think
would use it and why? Who ELSE uses it and why? Who was NEVER meant to use it, and why?
4. What assumptions do we make about this artifact?• What do we have to believe about society,
culture, knowledge, technology, ourselves—for this thing to even make sense?
THE KINDLE 2: ARTIFACT ANALYSIS
GROUPS: ASSEMBLE!
Get back into your groups
Your group must answer EACH of these four questions BUT YOU CAN’T REPEAT ANY OTHER GROUP’S ANSWERS!
You may use any of the resources at your disposal in this classroom (your own knowledge, each other, the Internet, me, etc.)
Your answers must have thought behind them! Don’t just write any crap because you saw it online. I will question you on it and you’d better have a good answer.
Be awesome.
Return my markers or there will be consequences.
Use the things we’ve talked about today—and the thinking skills you’ve built--to help you as you begin your rough draft of Project #1.
I expect you to make an effort, think, use your resources, and have your rough draft at least 75% complete by next F2F class time.
On your rough draft, do the best you can with MLA formatting—use your McGraw-Hill Handbook and make good use of things like the index, Table of Contents, etc. to find the info you need.
Check the website this week for info on how to submit your draft.
Good luck, n00bz!
