GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
July 29, 2018 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever wanted to be part of something bigger? Even the most independent among us likes to make changes and have an impact on others. In this Sun-day's Gospel reading, Jesus demonstrates one of his most iconic miracles - the multiplication of the loaves. It is a sign of the institution of the Eucharist, when we are fed not by bread but by the Body of Christ. In the stories of ancient pagan gods, mighty deeds were done entirely under the gods' own power. Mor-tals may have offered sacrifices to start the chain of events, but they played little role in the miraculous works themselves. Jesus is entirely different. The mul-tiplication of the loaves is a prime example not only of Jesus' power over nature, but of the way he equips his disciples. First, Jesus asks Philip a question "to test him." Jesus has seen the crowds and "he himself knew what he was going to do," but he wants his disciples to start thinking about the problem and its solution. Andrew offers a suggestion, though he isn't confident in it. "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?" Jesus honors Andrew's suggestion, takes the offered loaves, and delegates the Apostles to bring order to the crowd. When the crowd has been fed, the Apostles "gather the fragments left over." In the process, they discover with wonder that bread has been produced in super abun-dance. In the sacraments, God works through simple matter to make grace real in our lives. He works in and through us as well. Are you facing problems that could have spiritual solutions? Is there a need in your parish or community that you could meet? Whatever our hesitancies, Jesus honors our simple loaves and fishes. He invites us to participate in his generous work of redemption, just as we are.
2018-2019 Faith Formation
Registration has begun! We are looking for more religious education teachers. If you are a practicing Catholic, who attends mass each week, and would like to share your faith with our youth, and be a positive role model and cate-chist, please prayerfully consider being a religious education teacher / catechist. We will supply the ma-terials needed. Depending on the number of registrations and teacher availability, we would like to expand our Sun-day morning program grades 1-5 in both churches.
Do you know someone who is homebound and would like Holy Communion brought to them? Please let us know by calling the office. 617-479-9200
Please Pray for Our Parish! That many people will return to the practice of the faith and discipleship of the Lord!
Adopt a Garden—I’m looking for an individual or family to adopt each one of the small gardens around the Churches to take care of them. Please contact the office if you would like to help make a difference- plant/weed/water for the Lord!
Note from the Pastor, It is good to be back in the swing of things, we have already met with all the religious educa-tion catechists this summer and started prepar-ing for the fall. Much work has been done at Our Lady of Good Counsel hall to prepare for another religious ed. season, and soon Eddy Beck and other volunteers will be working on St. Thomas Aguinas hall, putting a new finish on the floor. I plan to do some work on the bathrooms, as well as doing some work in both Sacristies of Most Blessed Sacrament Church. I am very grateful to all the volunteers who serve our parish so well. This year we will have a 5pm Sunday Mass as part of the Confirmation program and meet af-terward in the Hall. The high schoolers have gone on their mission trip (and will have returned by the time you read this), as I write this I am preparing to join them for a couple days. Please pray for me, and for an increase in the practice of the faith in our parish. Blessings to all—Fr. Martin
