From the Pastor March 1, 2020
This week we begin an examination of the ages of the interior life and the place of contemplation within them according to two doctors of the Church—St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. The first of these three ages of the interior life is called the purgative. This is
the stage one enters after first conversion. What is meant by first conversion? Many of us were baptized as infants and raised in the Faith. We may even continue practicing the faith into adulthood, going to Mass and confession regularly. However, to enter into the purgative way, something more is needed. Granted, by baptism we are marked by God and given the initial gift of the Spirit, sanctifying grace. However, it is possible for this gift to remain dormant, even for one’s entire life. To progress in the interior life, there is the need for a spiritual awakening, a quickening within the soul, a fanning to flame of the ember of God’s grace within us. This awakening can come in various ways: a retreat, going on a mission, an encounter with a faith filled Christian, a book, or even a traumatic experience. It is an encounter that God uses to awaken within the soul a new desire—a desire for divine intimacy. This is not a desire to avoid hell or attain heaven, but for union with God—a desire that the soul dwell in Him and He in the soul. This interior awakening is marked by three exterior signs: dedication to prayer, rooting out sin, and charitable works. Those who embark on the purgative way begin to take prayer very seriously. They dedicate substantial time to daily prayer (generally periods of 30 minutes or more). The prayer of the purgative stage is primarily vocal (memorized or spontaneous prayers) and
meditation. Meditation is an active form of prayer—we must expend effort. It can begin with sensible things or with concepts/ideas. If it begins with sensible things, we may ponder the beauty of creation and how it reveals the Creator. We may pray the rosary and imagine the various scenes of salvation history, perhaps even placing ourselves with the Holy Family in the manager or with Mary at the foot of the Cross. If meditation begins with ideas, then we might ponder Jesus being fully God and fully man, the one God in three Persons, the manner in which the Spirit dwells within our souls, or the way we can see the hand of God at work in our own lives. This intense dedication to prayer leads to a initial knowledge of self and of God. One becomes acutely aware of one’s own sinfulness, dependence on God, and God’s goodness. Therefore, where one may have previously tolerated sin in one’s life with equanimity, the soul now becomes concerned with rooting out all sin—especially any grievous sin. Finally, the soul will begin to seek opportunities to serve God. One will look for opportunities to volunteer in the parish, to serve the poor in the community, to mentor children/youth, to help teach the faith, and the like. This threefold manifestation of initial conversion is an exciting time for an individual. Prayer is easy and delightful, the avoidance of sin is evident, and there is a joy in service not previously experienced. Though this is all good and a cause for showing gratitude toward God, the purgative age of the interior life is marked by certain pitfalls as well. We will consider these dangers next week. Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever!
In Christ,
Fr. Nicks

Mission Statement: The Ti-parish Catholic Social Concerns Ministry is made up of parishioners from St. Patrick, St. Francis and Assumption parishes, who strive, in the light of Gospel values, to raise awareness of and address social concerns in our community and society through word and deed.
LENT IS HERE! Three traditional practices Catholics do, especially during Lent, are: alms giving, prayer, fasting. Catholic Relief Services helps us with each of those practices. CRS carries out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas, through their work with organizations around the world to help those in need overcome emergencies, earn a living through agriculture and access affordable health care. ACT GLOBALLY Each year CRS offers OPERATION RICE BOWL to parishes dudring Lent, to encourage Catholics grow deeper in their faith, through giving alms to CRS, fasting in solidarity with those in need, and praying for and with those overseas who are struggling. 75% of money donated to CRS Operation Rice Bowl is used in overseas programs, while the remaining 25% is given to our diocese to be used locally. The money you put in your rice bowl each week goes to help so many around the world. Pick up your Rice Bowl at the door of the church. Please be generous. REMEMBER Week 1 of Lent: Catholic Social Teaching Principle 1: Sacredness and Dignity of the Human Person. Created in the image of God, all human life is sacred and possesses a dignity from our creation not from any action of our own. REFLECT HUNGER IN OUR WORLD: When Jesus fed the 5,000, he said, “give them some food yourselves.” Reflect on the challenge of global hunger. How can you support the hungry throughout the world and in your community? Visit crsricebowl.org for more info. ACT LOCALLY Not everyone in our community has a place to call home. Some people are left facing the rain, snow or cold nights on the streets. The SLEEP CENTER IN WALLA WALLA provides shelter in personal huts, that offers a stable and safe place to have a roof over their heads when they go to sleep at night. You can provide help in three ways: volunteering (541-203-0122), donate money or donate supplies to the Sleep Center at 15th & W. Rees between 6 & 10 p.m. (or bring to the St. Patrick office). Items needed: FOOD: Coffee, creamer, instant oatmeal, sugar, instant soups CLOTHING: gloves, rain ponchos, socks, warm coats (L & XL) TOILETRIES: body wash, conditioner, shampoo, razors, shaving cream, toothbrushes/ toothpaste BEDDING: blankets, sleeping bags, washable pillows OTHER: AA, AAA batteries, cold medicine, hand warmers PRAY Dear Lord, Help us to respond to your call to be members of one family. Guide us to feel constant, peaceful concern for our sisters and brothers throughout the world. Make us mindful of the needs of those who must endure, day by day, the injustice of hunger and poverty. Bless us all this Lenten season, that we may live in unity with others. Renew our Christian commitment to our global family.

Saint Katharine Drexel was born into great wealth. She had always been interested in the plight of the Indians, having been appalled by what she read in Helen Hunt Jackson’s A Century of Dishonor. While on a European tour, she met Pope Leo XIII and asked him to send more missionaries to Wyoming for her friend Bishop James O’Connor. The pope replied, “Why don’t you become a missionary?” After much discussion
with Bishop O’Connor, she wrote in 1889, “The feast of Saint Joseph brought me the grace to give the remainder of my life to the Indians and the Colored.” Newspaper headlines screamed “Gives Up Seven Million!” Mother Drexel and her first band of nuns—Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored established 50 missions in 16 states. After a heart attack at 77 she spent 20 quiet years in prayer & contemplation dying at age 96.

CARTA DEL PARROCO 1 DE MARZO DE 2020
Esta semana
comenzamos con
un examen de las
edades de la vida
interior y el
lugar de
contemplación
dentro de ellas
de acuerdo a dos
doctors de la
Iglesia- Santa
Teresa de Avila y
San Juan de la
Cruz.
debemos gastar esfuerzo. Puede comenzar con
cosas sensibles o conceptos /ideas. Si comienza con
cosas sensibles,
Padre Nicks
