Arsenal to thwart Liverpool’s Champions League dreamsFollowing the international break, the Barclays Premier League returns this weekend and Red Card’s Andy Penders gives his predictions

With only eight games remaining in the Premier League and a point separating most of the top teams, the chase for a place in the UEFA Champions League or Europa League is heating up.

We take a look at who is expected to further cement its place in Europe and who will be thwarted.

ArsenAl vs liverpool (4 Apr, 7.45pM)Liverpool aims to return to winning ways in the Barclays Premier League and get its push for a top-four finish back on track, but it’s going to be tough against an Arsenal side that is bang in form at the moment.

Earlier this season, the teams played out a 2-2 draw at Anfield, while in last season’s corresponding fixture, Arsenal claimed a 2-0 win. It seems that the Gunners have the upper hand here, so we will side with the team from North London. Prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool

MAnchester United vs Aston villA (4 Apr, 10pM)Four wins on the spin for Manchester United doesn’t tell the whole story as to what’s happening with Louis van Gaal’s side. It seems as though, through a mixture of good luck, injuries and positional changes, the Red Devils are hitting their best form of the season.

The Villans may have won two of their last three matches but they travel to Old Trafford knowing that last season the Red Devils put four past them, despite them having the lead. Expect something very similar this Saturday. Prediction: Manchester United 3-1 Aston Villa

everton vs soUthAMpton (4 Apr, 10pM)Has Everton turned the corner? Before the last two Premier League games, the Goodison Park outfit had recorded one win in 12 Premier League games. However, wins against Newcastle and QPR have seen Roberto Martinez’s side steady the ship.

Southampton is always dangerous and controls the vast majority of the games it plays, so it makes for a close affair. Last season, Everton won the match 2-1 thanks to a Romelu Lukaku winner and I expect the same to happen this time around.Prediction: Everton 2-1 Southampton

chelseA vs stoke (5 Apr, 12.30AM)You have to love this sort of game. Chelsea had 17 shots at goal in this fixture last season, and was fouled 18 times. Stoke had three efforts to try to trouble goalkeeper Petr Cech. You know this Sunday’s match at Stamford Bridge will take exactly the same pattern.

In Eden Hazard, I believe Chelsea has the player of the season so far and I think the Belgian will be influential once again and get on the score sheet.Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Stoke

crystAl pAlAce vs MAnchester city (7 Apr, 3AM)This Tuesday morning match will be one of the top in this round of fixtures. Alan Pardew has his Crystal Palace side playing with pace and width thanks to Saha and Bolassie, and they should make life very difficult for Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Manchester City’s last away trip ended in defeat against Burnley so Palace will believe that the points are for the taking. However, City is the league’s top goal scoring side, has had the most passes in the league this season, and has had the most shots at goal as well, so I expect plenty of goals in this match.Prediction: Crystal Palace 2-4 Manchester City

portraitsof LKY

With the passing of our nation’s key founding father, We take a look at some shoWs that honour the late mr lee

Lee Kuan Yew – our first Prime Minister and a pillar of modern politics – may have passed on but his legacy remains in many forms.

To further honour him, as well as to commemorate our nation’s milestone of SG50, two upcoming productions immortalise our visionary leader. One in film and one on stage, they will both be released later this year.

And to think they originally wanted Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai to act as Mr Lee!

If you absolutely can’t wait for its release, you can first view Lim’s delivery of this momentous scene in 1965, available on YouTube.

1965 will be released in theatres on Jul 30. More details will be announced soon.

The LKY MusicaL

Announced earlier this year, The LKY Musical will take on a more uplifting tone in remembering our late leader. Starring as Mr Lee Kuan Yew is local thespian Adrian Pang, who many people have said bears surprising resemblance to the former Prime Minister in his younger days.

See the early life of Lee Kuan Yew played out, from surviving the Sook Ching Massacre during the Japanese Occupation to the founding of independent Singapore in 1965.

Big BudgeT ProjecTBrought to stage by Metropolitan Productions (MP), The LKY Musical has been in the making for almost three years. MP’s director, Tan Choon Hiong, revealed that it is built on a multi-million-dollar budget.

Although not a biopic of Lee Kuan Yew, 1965 features our late leader as a prominent figure,

portayed by veteran actor Lim Kay Tong

Lim Kay Tong delivers a spot-on portrayal of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew

in this historical scene depicted in 1965

1965

Last year, Raintree Pictures initiated this project to commemorate Singapore’s Big 50. Executive producer Daniel Yun explained that while it’s not a biopic of Mr Lee, 1965 “will start and end with him”.

The film stars veteran actor Lim Kay Tong as Mr Lee, alongside Qi Yiwu, Joanne Peh and Malaysian actress Deanna Yusoff.

The MosT PoignanT sceneThe film features one of the most iconic moments in Singapore’s history. Announcing Singapore’s separation from Malaysia at a press conference on Aug 9, 1965, Mr Lee suddenly broke from his notes and gazed straight into the camera.

He addressed Singaporeans directly in an anguished speech, revealing a startling emotional side to the stoic leader. Mr Lee also reassured citizens, encouraging them that “many things will go on just as usual” and “everybody will have his place”.

This poignant moment was televised by TV Singapura back then, and can now be viewed on YouTube. It is quite possibly the centrepiece of 1965.

FLawLess deLiverYStarring as Mr Lee in 1965 is veteran actor Lim Kay Tong, who said that the Aug 9 separation telecast was “stuck indelibly” in his mind.

“You see a different side to the man, a very human side. That press conference really defined him in a different way,” said Lim, in a press conference for this film.

Lim’s portayal of Mr Lee is flawless. Apart from appearing just a tad slimmer, Lim successfully channels Mr Lee’s signature accent and mannerisms, right down to the reflexes as he breaks down on screen.

Accompanying the act is acclaimed singer-songwriter Dick Lee, who will belt out a score that is “lyrical, fairly acoustic and passionate”.

He explained, “I wanted it to match the serious subject matter but not for it to be heavy. There’s at the heart of it a very beautiful love story. Some of my best romantic songs are in this show.”

The LKY Musical will be directed by Steven Dexter, who has headed local productions such as Forbidden City, Fried Rice Paradise and Sing to the Dawn. His international musicals, which have been staged from West End to Germany, have won multiple awards.

diFFerenT PorTraYaLs oF Mr LeeWhen asked how he feels about being compared with Lim’s role as Mr Lee in 1965, Pang chuckled and said, “I’m focused on [doing] it as well as I can… But from what I’ve seen, I am sure Kay Tong will do a marvellous job with the role.”

Lim himself looks forward to seeing different representations of Mr Lee. He said, “The more portrayals, the better. It’s our way of paying tribute to [Mr Lee].”

The LKY Musical is expected to begin its show in end-July, and will continue over National Day. More details – including who will play the pivotal role of Mrs Lee, and performance dates and venues – will be announced later this month.

While We’re Young: Let’s be hipsters!

You can never be too old to be a hipster – it might even solve your mid-life crisis. But at what cost?

It must be horrible to realise you’re not cool anymore. Just yesterday you were an energetic 20-something hanging out with your gang but now you suddenly can’t pull off a fashionable fedora without looking shady.

Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts are Josh and Cornelia Srebnick, a middle-aged couple who have fallen into a slump. Josh’s career as a filmmaker hasn’t been very fertile, and neither has their childless marriage.

It doesn’t help that their same-age friends – played by Adam Horovitz (none other than Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys) and Maria Dizzia – always gloat about their parenthood, like baby bragging on Facebook without the “block” option.

HipstErs to tHE rEsCuEBut Josh and Cornelia meet a free-spirited, spontaneous young couple, and their life is turned around. Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried) are always in pursuit of something new: retro board games one day, getting a pet chicken the next.

Jamie fawns over Josh’s classic films, giving the old boy a nice ego boost; Darby brings Cornelia for blood-pumping hip-hop classes. I hope I’ll have such exciting, helpful company when I’m 40 too.

KEEp Your ENEMiEs CLosErJosh and Cornelia now find new meaning and passion in life – as well as new friends. All is well and perfect now. Or is it?

Amidst receiving fanboy praise from Jamie, Josh finds out that his new best friend isn’t as innocent and trustworthy as he thought.

But, as you’ll soon find out, Josh isn’t so faultless either – and he goes to petty yet crazy lengths to prove this. As the two couples spend more time together, they begin to bring out the ugly in each other.

a FrEsH tYpE oF CoMEDYOne thing that’s obvious is that While We’re Young is no sappy, mid-life crisis comedy. It is straightforward about pointing out its issues – such as fears about ageing and being stuck between a yawning generational gap – yet also manages to make silly jokes of them. And leave it to director Noah Baumbach to defy the modern comedy template we’ve grown tired of.

Look out also for Stiller’s signature slapstick gags, and the uncle-like manner in which he delivers witty punchlines.

Reviews hint at an ending that’s clever yet frustrating; something that I’m personally excited about. Something tells me that the sight of two middle-aged hipster-wannabes might be frustratingly hilarious too.

Singapore has chosen its representative in the upcoming Bacardi Global Legacy Cocktail Competition

After an intense final round of pouring and mixing, Peter Chua from 28HKS has been chosen to represent Singapore at the Bacardi Legacy Global Cocktail Competition in Sydney Australia.

In May, Peter will compete with 35 other finalists from all around the world for his cocktail creation to be the next “legacy cocktail”.

Held at the Long Bar Raffles Hotel, the Singapore nationals saw the top five cocktail craftsmen presenting their creation before industry experts.

The judges assessed the cocktails for aroma, balance of flavours, character appeal,

inspiration, story behind the creation of the cocktail and presentation as well as the outcome of the finalists’ marketing efforts over the last three months to prove the “legacy” quality of their cocktail, before making the final decision.

This event showcased highly-interesting designs and collaborations and was interesting for both those who love furniture and those who love design

In conjunction with SingaPlural, the International Furniture Fair Singapore and ASEAN Furniture Show (IFFS & AFS) was just held over the weekend. Featuring a collection of furniture and home accessories from 39 different countries ranging from ASEAN to Europe, it was an eye-opening experience for those who love design or interesting furniture.

The IFFS helps to facilitate conversations and create business opportunities between manufacturers and designers, distributors,

retailers, and hoteliers. It has become an international event that features

the best of furniture and home accessories from prominent manufacturers and designers across the globe.

A few lucky people also purchased personal pieces of these well-made works on the last day of IFFS (on Mar 16) when it was open to the public.

There were other design incentives that made the IFFS/AFS a holistic furniture and design event.

FURNITURE DESIgN AWARD Organised by the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), the Furniture Design Award aims to discover new design talents and to be a reputable showcase for the unique creations of the best creative minds. The award is held in conjunction with the IFFS / AFS, The Décor Show and Hospitality 360°.

The winning entry [to be announced] will win a 12sqm exhibition booth at the IFFS/AFS for the following year.

ASIAN STAR SHOWCASEWith much attention on the Western designs that have impacted the industry, it is now time for the spotlight to move to Asia. There have been a rising number of distinguished achievements by Asian designers over the years that has impacted the industry in Asia.

Printed lighting, to use light as part of the design, is an innovation curated by Singaporean designer Kenny Hong. An example of this innovation is “The Cloud” design installation displayed at the IFFS/AFS. The printed technology has been utilised in more projects such as the iLight@Marina Bay 2014 and National Day Parade 2014.

Indonesian born, Alvin T is another designer that has been getting more attention

recently and impacting the industry with his designs. He hopes to establish a new language of what modern contemporary Indonesian design could be by reinterpreting local tradition infused with a contemporary approach.

Starting in 2005 when he exhibited “Snug” in Design ex Melbourne Australia, Alvin T has now designed a Taffeta chair that is launched by Moooi during Salone del Mobile Milano in 2014.

With more Asian talents in the design industry, as evidenced at IFFS/AFS, it is time to let the spotlight shine on Asia and await their upcoming innovations.

By Rydell Tan

SingaPlural took place from Mar 10-15 at 99 Beach Road, and IFFS/AFS from Mar 13-16 at Singapore Expo Halls 1-6. Look out for more of the featured designs, and for the next edition.

Pared IndustrIalIsmOur popular section continues with more inspiring ideas and home makeovers

Having lived and worked in New York City for over a year, the owner of this 4-room HDB flat returned to Singapore with a strong idea of what she wanted in her new

home. She took reference from the industrial stylings of many apartments in New York but, at the same time, gave the design a minimalist twist that is more appropriate for her lifestyle.

With the help of design firm Meter Square, the home turned out to be a balanced fit for its owner.

Easy stylEThe homeowner emphasised the importance of having a home that requires minimal maintenance. Designer Boyce Tan explains, “She travels a lot for work and there will be long periods of time when no one will be at home. The last thing that she wants is to return home and spend her days cleaning and dusting the rooms.”

As such, the material palette was simplified with clean and low-maintenance surfaces such as laminates, concrete screed and the existing wooden floor. Boyce and his team also pared down their approach to furniture selection, allowing the home to breathe without being too cluttered and busy.

HomE WorksKeeping in mind that the homeowner leads a bit of a nomadic lifestyle, Boyce didn’t want to weigh down the home with bulky furniture. The dining room, for example, has been stripped of any unnecessary feature.

The only addition is a bar counter opposite the dining set. He said, “The owner works on her laptop and she doesn’t like to stay rooted in one spot. So we created different areas around the apartment where she can sit down with her laptop and work.”

BarE BasicsMeter Square replaced the tiling on the floor and walls of the master bathroom, keeping in line with the

pared down industrial vibe of the rest of the home. Boyce and his team also equipped the room with new fixtures and a shower screen.

island amBitionThe kitchen in this resale flat has an unconventional triangular layout, which proved to be a challenge for Boyce and his team. The owner wanted to have an island counter in the middle of the room, which wasn’t easy considering the room’s awkward shape.

However, with a bit of careful space planning, the designers managed to work around the problem and built an island with timber laminates and a granite counter top.

Bathroom talkHome makeover Ideas

Some of the top interior design experts share their ideas and inspirations in creating the dream bathroom space

“There aren’t many options for storage in the bathroom, so cabinets are still ideal. Always try to build them higher so they avoid getting splashed by water and are easier to clean.

I also like to create little niches in the wall, or build concrete ledges in the shower area to hold the bottles.”

– Katy Chong, Senior Designer, Artistroom

“A dream bathroom, for me, is a room with plenty of space and a view to die for. There are few things more decadent and relaxing than lounging in a nice, warm bath with soft music in the background and a lovely view to gaze at.

I would advise homeowners to use wallpaper in the bathroom. As long as the room is well ventilated, you can use wallpaper. Just make sure you keep it in areas that don’t get wet and you consider where the edges of the paper are.”

– Nikki Hunt, Founder & Principal, Design Intervention

“Everyone knows that it’s generally not easy using wood in the bathroom, especially in our humid weather. But that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to use wood surfaces in the bathroom.

I would love the opportunity to design a toilet using specially treated wood on both the walls and floor. I think it’d be amazing to have a forest-theme or a back-to-nature feel in the bathroom.”

– Sheryl Tan, Director, Pavillion Creation

“There are a few tricks you can use to try to maximise the space usage in the bathroom. For example, you can use a semi-recessed washbasin to save a bit more space, or reposition the bathroom entrance so the door won’t take up space when it’s open.

And I suggest forgoing the bathtub as most bathrooms in local homes really can’t afford the space.”

– John Chan, Director, Neu Konceptz

It’s tIme to start plannIng for the mId-year school holIdays – get ahead of the crowd and start bookIng tIckets for some famIly fun

With the mid-year school holidays inching closer and the Travel Revolution fair coming soon, you’ll need some ideas on where to bring the family this June.

Here are some fun places and experiences that you can scope out deals for!

Malaysialegoland Even if you’ve been there before, Legoland Malaysia is always introducing fresh and fascinating segments to its visitors. Running until end-June is an all-new Lego Friends Live show, which features a five-girl cast, original Lego Friends music and an exclusive story written specially for the resort.

Legoland Malaysia is now also offering a special VIP Expedition. This personalised guided tour will let you dine with Lego costume characters, get express access to rides, receive free Legoland merchandise and experience exclusive Lego building sessions with Master Model builders.

You’ll even get to build a mini Lego version of yourself and have it placed in the famous Miniland area! The VIP Expedition is going at RM765 (adults) and RM665 (children). Annual Pass holders and hotel guests are entitled to an RM200 discount.

Hong Kong disneyland You may have heard of Hong Kong Disneyland’s Ironman Experience expansion coming up in 2016. But you don’t have to wait until then to hit this magical land – it already has spectacular new features you’ll want to catch with the kids.

Marvel as your favourite Disney and Pixar movies burst into life in an unforgettable night parade. The mesmerising Disney Paint the Night parade made its debut in Hong Kong Disneyland late last year, illuminating the streets with more than 740,000 individual lights, seven original floats and performers glowing from head to toe.

Featuring the bubbly characters from Monsters, Inc; Cars; The Little Mermaid; and Toy Story, the Paint the Night parade is the first LED parade created by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

And here’s the most exciting part: you’ll be able to interact with the parade with the new Mickey Magic Paint Brush, which changes colours on the floats and performers! You can also pay a visit to the Tomorrowland Bootique and be painted in make-up by professionals before joining the party.

JapanUniversal stUdiosWhy fly all the way to Japan for Universal Studios if we have one here? There are plenty of great reasons why – much bigger park grounds, other exclusive rides and the endless supply of sashimi – but, for me, the biggest draw to visit USJ is for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

Fan of Harry Potter or not, you’ll be astounded by the sheer magnificence of the scale of the Hogwarts castle. The castle grounds are open for you to explore the classrooms and corridors from the movies. Step into Dumbledore's Office and the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, and chat with some moving portraits!

The Flight of the Hippogriff is a family-friendly ride that whisks you away on a bewitching adventure. But if you’re up for something more adrenaline-pumping, take a gander at the award-winning Forbidden Journey, and experience the thrills of flying on a broomstick with a furious dragon hot on your heels!

dUbaiWater parKsForget the usual slip-and-slide into a pool. Atlantis in The Palm’s Aquaventure has a collection of rides that will steal your heart (and your guts).

Take the Leap of Faith off a nine-storey vertical mega-slide and speed into a clear tunnel, surrounded by real sharks and rays. Or step into a capsule and sit tight while you wait for the floor to drop beneath you, plunging you from the top of the tower at a speed of up to 60km/h!

If you’re travelling here on your birthday, you’ll get to spend a whole day at Aquaventure for free.

Atlantis boasts not just wild water coasters; it also has a Dolphin Bay and a Lost Chambers Aquarium, among other attractions, where you can get closer to marine life at a more reasonable pace.

Dubai is also home to insane water park Wild Wadi – just outside The Palm – whose heart-stopping rides appeared in The Amazing Race, The Amazing Race Asia and The Amazing Race Australia.

So, grab your planner (and partner) and start checking these great destinations off your list – the kids will thank you for the unforgettable holiday treat!
