T he catamaran for the 7thContinent expedition sailedinto the port of Gustavia on

May 11, for a short, unexpectedstop to make repairs. The boat hadbroken its mast on the night ofMay 7-8, when it was “Just 200nautical miles from its goal: theSargasso Sea,” explains RomainTiki, second in command. LeavingLe Marin Martinique, on May 5,the boat was heading toward theSargasso Sea, 300 nautical mileseast of Bermuda in order to see oneof the large gyres – giganticwhirlpools – concentrated in themiddle of each ocean with tons oftrash, primarily plastic, decom-posed into particles. Centripetalforce slowly pulls this debristoward the center to form artificialcontinents. At least five such gyres,or spirals, pollute the northern andsouthern parts of the Atlantic andPacific Oceans as well as the Indi-an Ocean. The gyre in the SargassoSea is that which threatens thenorthern Atlantic. “At just 200

miles we started to find these parti-cles of plastic in the water,” indi-cates Tiki. “We got out our scien-tific equipment.”

The goal of the 7th Continent expe-dition is to bring back all the neces-sary proof about these environmen-tal disasters. The leader of the expe-dition is Patrick Deixonne, a formerfire fighter from Guyana, who firstrealized the extent of this pollutionwhen he rowing in the 3rd editionof the Rames Guyane, a race fromFrench Guyana to Senegal, and hesaw this trash pile in the ocean. Hegathered what it took to get his firstexpedition underway in the Pacificlast year. “We could see that this7th continent really existed,”Deixonne told the press. He wasable to convince his sponsors toengage in a second expedition tothe Sargasso Sea, with a team ofscientists as part of the team.

And not just any scientists wereaboard the boat: the 7th Continent

expedition is organized with thesupport of the CNES (FrenchSpace Center) the ESA (EuropeanSpace Agency), the CNRS, and thescientific institution MercatorOcean. “The goal is the collect theparticles to evaluate their volume inthe water,” notes Tiki. “But also toevaluate the plankton as we areafraid it might have ingested theseparticles. Yet the plankton is thebase of the entire food chain in theocean,” adds Tiki. “With the satel-lites from the space agency, we areable to map out these masses oftrash, as well as understand the cur-rents that cause them to converge.”

Arriving in Saint Barth on Sunday,May 11 to make repairs, the boatleft again on May 13 to head backto Guadeloupe to get another boatloaned to them by a company inMartinique, Autremer Concept. They set sail again on Wednesday,May 14, on an expedition toexplore the gyre in the northernAtlantic through May 25.

7TH CONTINENT EXPEDITION STOPS IN ST BARTHPatrick Deixonne’s 7TH Continent expe-dition wants to educate the public aboutthe large concentration of plastic spun tothe middle of the world’s oceans by cen-tripetal force and almost creating actualcontinents of trash and a potential envi-ronmental disaster. The boat was on itsway to the Sargasso Sea when it made atechnical stop in St Barth on May 11.
