Headmaster OCGA Art Exhibition and Sale The 13th Old Camberwell Grammarians’ Art Exhibition and Sale will once again celebrate the artistic talents of members of the Camberwell Grammar School community. Old Boys, families connected to the school in any way, current and past parents, current and past staff will be exhibiting. This year we are excited to stage this event in a new display space – the lower floor in the McDonald Building. Our Gala Opening will be on Wednesday 1 June from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. The Exhibition and Sale will be open for viewing from 10.00am to 4.00pm Monday 30 May to Thursday 3 June 2016. For further details please refer to the invitation attached to this Bulletin. All Year 11 students who are studying a Unit 3 and 4 VCE subject, other than CISCO, will be sitting the VCE General Achievement Test (GAT) on Tuesday 7 June from 10.00am to 1.15pm. Students who are not studying a Unit 3 and 4 subject will sit for a Practice GAT at the same time. Year 11 students return to School for normal classes on Wednesday 15 June. Please refer to the flyer attached to this Bulletin for timetables for the coming examination/assessment period. Students are only required to attend school for their particular exams or practice exams, but while attending school, full school uniform is to be worn. There are no scheduled sports fixtures on Saturday 11 June due to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. I wish all of our students the very best as they face these summative assessments and encourage them to use this time as a learning period. The tests are a chance to display what has been learned, and also to identify areas for future learning. Student Presentation High standards of dress and appearance are part of our overall commitment to excellence in everything we do, and I do thank all parents for the strong support they give to the school in ensuring that our student’s appearance is neat, tidy and appropriate at all times. From time to time, though, we need to remind some students about our expectations. These are printed in our School Diary, which provides a useful reference guide. Hairstyles, in particular, should be smart and moderate. Extremes of styles are not permitted. Hair must not touch the collar, nor be styled in such a way that it is capable of falling forwards towards the eyes or face. Undercuts of any kind are not permitted, nor may hair be shaved at the back or sides. Students should not gel or dye their hair, nor use any spray or substance to artificially hold it in place. Sideburns, irrespective of length, are not permitted. I also ask your support in ensuring that your son is clean-shaven. I do thank all parents for their support in these matters. Our insistence on these things is designed to encourage the students to take pride in their appearance, and to present themselves as the capable young men that they are. Middle SchoolStudent Free DayIt has certainly been a busy few weeks for our students; however, there is a well-earned break on the horizon. On Friday 3 June we have a student free day, as teachers will be involved in marking and report writing. The following week sees the boys involved in the special Week 9 Program, which provides a wonderful opportunity for learning beyond the classroom structure.

Projec10 FundraiserOn Wednesday morning Ms Sally Treacy from Projec10 spoke to Year 8 students about an exciting combined fundraising initiative. You might recall that we raised money for Projec10 last year, and the boys came up with a wonderful array of food stalls and other initiatives. Projec10 supports the Youth Apprenticeship Program in Ghana and revolves around students developing their own enterprises to raise money. Later this term we will be joined by students from Camberwell Girls’ Grammar, PLC and Fintona, and project teams will be created with members from across the schools. The students will work together to raise money for this fantastic cause. All interested boys were able to sign up over the past few days and we can now look forward to working with our partner schools on Thursday 16 June, when we will host the students from the girls’ schools to launch the event. The combined nature of the project provides the students with a wonderful opportunity to form connections and friendships across the schools. Year 8 students from Camberwell Girls’, Fintona and PLC are also invited to the Term 4 Year 8 Social, which is always a wonderful event.

da Vinci DecathlonOur team that advanced to Tuesday’s State Final at MLC performed admirably against strong opposition. The boys placed first in Engineering, third in English and fourth in Cartography, to claim sixth place overall. The team now advances to the National Championships in Sydney at the end of this term. Well done to Isaac Hui, Cameron Lee, Phillip Ma, Andrew Ho, Ken Weeraratne, James Pittard, Ethan To and Benjamin Chen (all Year 7).

Science and Geography CompetitionsNext Tuesday all Middle School boys will participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Science competition. Results will be available next term. Selected Year 8 students were also involved in the Rio Tinto ‘Big Science’ competition this week. Last week most of our Year 8 boys elected to participate in the Australian Geographic Competition, run by the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland. I congratulate all boys who participated and wish them well for the pending results.

Rob French, Head of Middle School

SportSport training and matches will be somewhat disrupted over the next few weeks with camps, excursions and exams taking front stage at school. Please refer to the list below for further information.

Congratulations to the Junior Squash Team, consisting of Arman Cakmakcioglu, Oliver Powell (both Year 8), Christopher Miller and Yuvraj Pandher (both Year 7) who came second in the Eastern Victorian Squash Championships last Wednesday. They now move on to the state finals in August at MSAC. A reminder also to all parents that if your son has any outside sporting achievements to please contact the Sport Department at [email protected] 8 Training as normal – Saturday 4 June Round 6Week 9 No training (no Saturday match due to the long weekend)Week 10 Middle School Tuesday/Senior School Wednesday onwards – Saturday 18 June, Round 7Week 11 No training (no Saturday match due to the holidays)Week 11 Summer Sport Change of Preference Week. This is the only time students are allowed to change their Summer Sport for the following Season (2016/2017).

Sport Report - Winter Round 4The First Hockey Team had a solid performance from the start of the match to the end, winning 6-0 against Marcellin. The ball movement, that was lacking from last weekend’s match against PEGS, returned. Patrick Emmett (Year 10) had another strong match scoring an unbelievable goal in the second half. Not to be outdone Charlie Harper (Year 9) also scored an amazing goal just moments later. William Camfield (Year 9) also tapped in a nice goal after being in the right position on the post. Tim Edney (Year 11) was once again solid all over the field while James Sampson (Year 9) was solid in defence. The First XVIII Football match against Yarra Valley was a close contest from the outset. The team came out ready to play; playing accountable football and scores even as the team headed into the first break. In the second quarter the team lost focus and allowed Yarra Valley to get their running game going, kicking five goals to our one. The third quarter saw an improvement in the way the team used the ball, outscoring the opposition and clawing their way back into the game. Unfortunately, the intensity and defensive game dropped off in the last ten minutes, allowing Yarra Valley to kick away. Riley Verbi (Year 12) played magnificently, winning the ball all over the ground. Jake Purcell (Year 11) fought hard, whilst Harrison Lucas (Year 12) never dropped his head and created an honest contest every time the ball went into our back line. The First XI Soccer match saw both teams come out strong in the first half with the Camberwell forward line creating numerous scoring opportunities, which eventually resulted in a goal from George Kalas (Year 11). However, Yarra Valley was quick to reply with a goal of their own. Camberwell largely dominated the second half with an opening goal scored from the corner flag by Andres Greensmith (Year 12) followed by two goals from Kaspar Scheiber and one from Kirk Bustin (both Year 12). Notable performances came from Lucas Lewit-Mendes (Year 12) dominating play on the wing as well as Jack Vitinaros and Jesse Ward (both Year 12) who held together the Camberwell defence. The end result was 5-1 to Camberwell. With only 11 players there was a lot of pressure on Fourth Blue Soccer players to step up. Most of the play was in Camberwell’s forward half throughout the match, putting Trinity on the defensive right from the start. Numerous shots for goal by a number of Camberwell players eventuated in successful goals from Aden Stitz, Benny Yuan and Je-Rome Cheong (all Year 11). Persistence, fitness and great skills certainly paid off.The annual Mitre Cup Football match is being held on Saturday 4 June, at Gordon Barnard Reserve. The game starts at 11.30am and it would be great to get as many students down to support the team as possible. We are aiming to retain the prestigious award for the second year in a row. Those that attended the game last year saw a great match against the school’s archrival and this year will be no different. Please get down to the game after your own Saturday sport.

CGS Hockey – Polar Fleece Jackets

In an effort to find a warm alternative for those winter mornings waiting for the game to start or while

the boys are on the bench, Friends of Hockey have organised for the bonded polar fleece zip jackets

to be made up with the school emblem. We have sizes M, L and XL in stock.

This polar fleece is the heaviest fabric we have been able to source (350gsm), it will provide a lot of

warmth and it should also offer a degree of wind protection. They will be available for $40.00 each

which is below cost as Friends of Hockey are paying for the embroidery and set-up.

The sizing is shown in the table below, however from the samples we have received so far the size is

not overly generous. The chest measurement is directly under the arms and is the exact size of the

jacket, so it is therefore worth taking into account that the boys will be wearing tops underneath. The

length is from the top of the collar to the bottom of the jacket.

The jackets will be at the Development Office. You are welcome to try a sample to determine the

required size.
