Dear ReadersHappy Halloween!I hope you are about to take part in some sort of the local

activities or events this weekend, as

well as enjoying the forthcoming

Fiestas both in Benidorm and in

Alfaz del Pi. With a record

number of winter visi-

tors returning for some

sun and a warmer cli-

mate, the local towns

are filling up with new

visitors as well as well

recognised friends

from the past.

Now with only 7 days to the

start of the Benidorm and Alfaz Del Pi Fiestas, the highlight

is on the British fancy dress party. This should be the

biggest and the best in the whole of Europe and takes place

on Thursday 13th November.

The Weekly Buzz team will be there to take part in the

famous event and capture photographs of the hundreds of

amazing costumes and celebrations. We have put our focus

on the event with a Fiesta Special 8 page pull out, giving

you all of the event schedules and a run down of the most

popular places to visit.

2013 was one of the best and most visited Fiestas ever and

visitors for the week took the hotel and apartment occupan-

cy to full capacity. We are very likely to see a repeat of these

numbers. They could even be exceeded with the fact that

many local ex pats from around the Costa Blanca and

beyond are visiting. The reason of course being to see how

Benidorm is transformed into Europe's biggest place to

party and is also the place which hosts the best fancy dress

event ever seen anywhere.

Do not forget the shopping days left before Christmas are

sliding away! Before we realise, the next big celebration will

be Christmas Eve. So, the focus for the next 8 weeks

should be looking for the ideal gift idea, or to capture some

great bargains by reading here at the Weekly Buzz each

week.

chance to find out how the Consulate can help and

check that they are properly registered for health-

care.

They will have a stand at the entrance to the stores

in San Javier, Benidorm and Torrevieja with infor-

mation about padrón, residencia, property, health-

care and how to keep in touch with the Embassy via

social media.

The team will be in the following stores on the fol-

lowing days:

• Iceland San Javier Monday 3rd November from 11am-3pm

British Vice Consul Lloyd Milen says: “We are really

grateful to Iceland for giving us the opportunity to

use their stores to talk to British nationals.

hope that as well as doing the weekly shop, Brits

will have a chance to talk to us about what their con-

cerns are and how we can help them.

It’s also a chance for shoppers to check that they

are registered for healthcare and get answers to

any questions they may have about living in Spain.

We hope to see you there!”

BENIDORMS JAKE TAKESTHE PANTO PLUNGE!

JAKE CANUSO is the man who turned down

Kylie Minogue. The dancer-turned-actor, who

plays barman Matteo in ITV's comedy hit

Benidorm, toured the world performing with

the likes of Take That, the Spice Girls and

Prince.

Jake will be performing Aladdin at Billingham

Forum this Christmas.

He has shared his feelings with the team from

the northern echo ...Canuso says: "If I've sur-

vived Splash! I can survive anything," he

jokes. "Of course to start with the idea is terri-

fying. I've been on stage in front of 70,000

people in concerts but panto is a very different

experience. It wasn't part of my experience as

a child although I've seen a lot of them."

Between series of Benidorm he competed in

ITV's diving show Splash! in which celebrities

were mentored by Olympic champion Tom

Daley. He's glad he did it but it was petrifying,

he says. Not least because he was caught up

in the 2004 Boxing Day Thailand tsunami

while holidaying with his sister on a small

island off the coast.

He was on the beach when

the gigantic wave struck

and at one point was

trapped underwater

beneath a fallen tree as he

started to lose conscious-

ness. Eventually the tidal

surge pushed him back to

the surface and he man-

aged to grab hold of some-

thing that was floating. He

found his sister, also

unharmed, after about 40

minutes.

He didn't go back in the

water for several years.

"The first week on Splash brought a lot of

those memories back because all of a sudden

you were deep underwater and memories in

your subconscious come back. I had to con-

centrate so hard on the diving," he says.

Jake will be back for the next season of

Benidorm and before he left he was asked

what it was like to play barman Matteo.

Barman Matteo is "so much fun" to play. "He

gets to do ludicrously silly things and gets to

be very stupid. He's always trying it on with

someone but it never happens. That's part of

his charm – he always fails at everything,"

says Canuso.

His English isn't very good unlike Canuso

who's fluent in five languages. "When I'm in

Spain I'm quite happy rabbiting away in

Spanish. Or I can be in the middle of a con-

versation and slip into German. There's a

funny dynamic with my family because we

speak all these different languages. At Sunday

lunch I might throw some Italian to my par-

ents, Swiss to some of the children and

Spanish to nephews."

622nd- 28th October 2014TRAVEL AROUND

Located just outside of Benidorm on the north

of the Costa BLanca, Villajoyosa (La Villa

Joiosa) is the capital of the Marina Baixa dis-

trict. A delightful and historic town, it stretches

the length of a lovely wide, sandy beach, with

pretty coloured fishing houses running along

the seafront and is encompassed with a back-

drop of mountains.

Situated around 26 kilometres from the city of

Alicante and Alicante International airport,

Villajoyosa is a well-situated destination, ideal

for exploring the rest of the Costa Blanca coast-

line

HistoryVillajoyosa has a rich cultural heritage. It’s his-

tory as a town dates back to the 6th century

and it has been settled by the Greeks,

Phoenicians, the Romans and of course the

Moors, when it actually fell into some decline,

which is unusual for a Moorish occupied town.

The town as it is known today was founded in

1293 by an Admiral who served in the Kingdom

of Aragon’s navy. It’s name Villajoyosa, literally

means Joyful town.

Throughout the centuries Villajoyosa has been

an important trade point along this coastline;

trading in olive oil, cereals and wine, and ship-

building, amongst others. But probably what it

is most famous for is chocolate. During the 19th

century the town started to develop a choco-

late-making industry. Because of its trade con-

nections, it started importing cocoa from

Ecuador and Venezuela and the industry grew

and grew. The chocolate brand, ‘Valor’, which

can be found in most shops and supermarkets

throughout Spain comes from Villajoyosa. If

you visit in July, you can watch the splendid

week-long Moors and Christians fiesta with

mock battles re-enacting the Christians

reclaiming their land from the Moors. Theis fes-

tival is one of the best in the region and many

tourists come back each year n July especially

for this.

MUSEUMS

Villajoyosa MuseumSome outstanding archaeological artefacts

from the Valencia region are housed in the town

museum, which was set up in 1975. For those

interested in finding out more about the history

of the region, you can join one of the museum's

guided tours. As well as the museum, the tours

also visit the old town, chocolate museum and

Barbera Museum. Children can embark on a

pirates' tour or become a Roman for a fun-filled

hour.

Barbera Del Aragones MuseumStep back in time when you walk through the

door of this 17th century palace. You can find

out how people lived in the 17th to 19th cen-

turies. The museum houses many period

pieces from those centuries so you can see

how they entertained one another and cooked.

Valor Chocolate MuseumNo visit to Villajoyosa would be complete with-

out a trip to the Valor Museum. After a short film

explaining how the chocolate is made and

where the cocoa beans come from, you can

see how it is produced. The tour ends in the

Valor chocolate shop where you can sample

the produce before you buy.

Old TownVillajoyosa old town is a delightful place to wan-

der through. Its narrow streets lead to charming

squares where you can enjoy a coffee or a

meal while watching the world go by. The old

town is a Spanish historic heritage site because

it is such an interesting and well-preserved

quarter. Here you can see the colourful houses

hanging over the river Amadorio and cross the

bridge dividing the old and new towns.

Fish MarketA trip to the afternoon fish market should be on

your agenda. It is a chance to see the wide vari-

ety of fish and shellfish caught in the

Mediterranean and brought to shore by

Villajoyosa fishermen.

BeachesVillajoyosa’s beaches are absolutely fantastic.

Up and down the Costa Blanca coast you have

other also very good beaches but Villajoyosa’s

are something special.

All of Villajoyosa’s beaches have the European

Blue Flag awards which indicate a good quality

standard of beach and facilities.

Altea is dominated by it's beautiful land mark church located on top of a steep hill

surrounded by quaint "Old Town" houses in very narrow streets. Many of these houses

have been changed into restaurants and bar cafes.

In it's early tourist days in the early 1960,s attracted many artists, musicians, writers and

craft craftsmen leading to Altea having a Bohemian atmosphere .

VILLA JOYOSA

If you plan on visiting Villa Joyosa, then why not try one of the mostraved about reastaurants in the area, El Maricchi. Here you can try out-

standing authentic mexican cuisine, with all the families favourites!

NEWS 75th - 11th November 2014

What a fantastic location in which to sit down and have a

game or two of chess, by the fountain in Dove Park (Parc

D’Elx ), Old Town, Playa Poniente, Benidorm.

Whatever your ability, from complete beginner to master,

you will be made most welcome and invited to take a

seat and play. People of all ages and all nationalities

come and go as they please throughout the day, in order

to enjoy the game and play different opponents.

The club is named “Ajedrez L’illa de Benidorm” (Chess

Isle of Benidorm) and is run by Andres Rubio. Andres is

a kind and friendly gentleman who can speak extremely

good English, French, Italian and his native Spanish

(both Catalan and Valenciano).

The club also has a president Pedro Del Amo Delgado, a

vice president, secretary and other committee members

(some of whom are shown in the picture in front of the

fountain). All are volunteers who give up their time to

provide something of great value in the community.

In the Summer you will also see long tables set out,

where they invite children to come and to learn, play,

enjoy and improve. It is very important that young people

are taught this interesting and amazing game, which

requires thought and concentration in order to win (and

also sometimes learn to lose gracefully).

At the other end of the scale, I spoke to one of the older

members Ramon Urso Gill who enjoys his games in

Dove Park. He was also very proud to tell me that he

worked for the British Ambassadors in Madrid for 25

years!

The club is totally self-funding and although embraced by

the Town Hall for what it provides, it receives no financial

assistance from them. For this reason, the club has

decided this year to make a very small charge for play-

ing, in order that they can buy things such as a bigger

storage box for the equipment as the club expands. The

Town Hall do provide the club with such things as chairs

and tables, because the council are so pleased to have

the club running in Dove Park.

I don’t think you could get better value as entertainment

and a chance to improve your skills and get to know peo-

ple. The charge is only 1€ WEEKLY! You can stay as

long as you want and play as many times as you want for

this. Ideal for holidaymakers! For residents or long stay-

ers, it can be even better value, as it is only 20€ to

become a member for the whole YEAR!

The club was only started 4 years ago and has already

got 45 members. However, they would very much like

this to increase, especially amongst the English speaking

community.

The club has also got big plans for the future. One very

important event will be to hold a summer chess camp for

children of all ages from all over Europe. This will be

held in July next year, in the Bali Hotel. There will be

Grand Masters as teachers for the children and any of

the parents who wish to play, will be invited to play chess

in the open, whilst their children are safe in the campus.

In addition to this, there should be at least 2/3 tourna-

ments per year. However the club are hoping that

through the Summer, they can have a tournament every

Saturday.

(This does not mean that you cannot come down and just

play for fun).

Chess is played 365 days per year by the fountain in

Dove Park from 10.30 in the morning. This is one of the

best spots to sit during the hot summers, in the shade of

the trees. Even in the winter there is probably only the

need for a sweater. If the weather should be too bad to

sit outside, there is no need to worry, as you are invited

to go along to the Social Centre, C/Limones 24, which is

only a short walk away, to have your game(s).

For more information give Andres a call on 657 136 730,

or simply COME ON DOWN TO DOVE PARK AND JOIN

IN.

HEPBURNS BAR in Albir is a very very

popular and thriving bar. It is such a

friendly place to sit, either inside or on the

terrace and enjoy a drink from their large

selection. It is an ideal place to make

friends or to meet with existing friends.

There is always a nice atmosphere and

nothing is too much trouble for the staff.

The bar is also the ideal place for sports

lovers, with any of your requested sports

being shown. For music lovers, Jane

plays her music video's from all the popu-

lar era's every night. For social lovers,

there are theme nights and games after-

noons.

Whether you are a resident or a holiday-

maker you will be made to feel most wel-

come by the friendly staff and customers

alike.

The owners of the bar Paul and Helen,

would like to thank everyone for their sup-

port since they took over. Regular cus-

tomers will know however that Paul has

also in addition, another career which

involves work contracts overseas. Due to

the amount of this work having increased

over the past months, Paul has decided to

hand over more of the day to day running

of the business to his very capable Bar

Manager Jane. Jane is well known in the

village and has worked in the bar for the

last 2 years. She has also run other bars

in Benidorm and has a most extensive

collection of music and videos from the

past 50 years, which are played all night.

Jane also very much loves football and is

a keen Liverpool supporter.

Jane is well liked by regulars and tourists.

Also very much liked is Lynne, who works

behind the bar throughout the week and

has been there a similar length of time.

Paul and Helen would like to dispel any

rumours that they have sold up or given

up the bar. This is totally not the case and

they cannot stress enough that they will

always be there in the background and

that the bar is staying under their owner-

ship. Paul is still involved in the running in

the background and they will both visit as

often as they can. Basically you will see

as much of them as their other work con-

tracts allow and they are as committed as

ever in keeping Hepburns Bar as the no. 2

in Albir on Trip Adviser - second only to the

lighthouse!

Paul has always said that staff and cus-

tomers like to "take care of each other"

and there is no change here. The bar has

also arranged many charity nights and

fundraising events, as can be evidenced

on their facebook site The New Hepburns

Bar Albir.

Food is not served unless for a special

event. The bar is just a really traditional

watering hole. Dogs are also welcome.

If you are not already a customer, it is time

to find out what this traditional and friendly

bar is about. For a great welcome pay a

visit any day.

10 Nightlife & Entertainment

working for nine years and this year

will e the ten year anniversary of the

Rock and Roll House, Simon Patrick

the number one Elvis Tribute Act told

me “ Im happy here the people are

lovely I get so many e mails asking

when I will be here so they can plan

their holidays.”

From March onwards the season

starts for Simon all the way through to

Christmas. Then he will chill out for a

couple of months to recharge before

the next season.

Simon explained “I have a lot of con-

tacts back home and very soon has

some big shows in Blackpool and

Leeds for three days performing

together with a seven piece band,

then on the 8th November the band

will be flying out here for a week performing

with me for the ninth anniversary of the Rock

and Roll House with a full Vegas Show, the first

time ever that I have done this in Benidorm.”

Simon explained that money being limited

around the venues in Benidorm to pay for live

bands to perform was because that the enter-

tainment was free here, no one charges for

entry and you know most places in the world

offering four acts a night would charge, at

home in the UK you can pay like £10 easily for

a night of entertainment.

So I asked Simon about the Shaky and Elvis

Show “ I have been performing live with Dean

Ryan now for four years we met up and

became buddy’s. His passion is Shaky and so

is mine as well as Elvis so we are both passion-

ate about what we do. I couldn’t do a show with

just anyone it’s a special chemistry we have

and works really well.” “We do 30 minutes indi-

vidually then perform a Rock and Roll party

duo, there is an amazing energy between us

and the public love it”.

Talking about where the customers come

because the venue is almost full every night, so

being situated across form the Flamingo Oasis

hotel, the Melia, and the Levante Club and

being all inclusive doesn’t stop them coming

out.

Simon turned up in Benidorm after making a

decision to perform abroad, “So I said to my

mum Im going to give it ago abroad and decid-

ed I was going to Benidorm.” I put a little money

in my pocket and had with me my backing

tracks and costume, I turned up in Benidorm I

had nowhere to live so I asked around doing a

bit of homework.”

“My First ever show was at the Pig n Whistle

following a performer called Neil St John then I

walked into the Rock and Roll House and said

I will perform for free for half an hour, if you like

me then great!, its actually all been plain sail-

ing.”

“They gave me a chance, I took it and never

looked back”.

I said you are recognised all over the town and

have many many fans that visit from all over

Europe, how do you take that? Simon said “I

really do love it here I have some great friends

and love my fans the people who I meet here

are having fun and enjoying themselves that’s

what Benidorm is all about.”

“Working for the owners here could not be bet-

ter they are my friends and we understand each

other, I respect them we have a great under-

standing I don’t ever let them down and the are

the same with me.”

“I go back home every third

week for a week make sure

my mums ok have a little rest

keep my freshness then come

back feeling great”.

We talked about the Elvis

Fiesta in Benidorm with the

third year coming up in April

2014 this started in Wales

every September it started off

with 200 people and now

attracts thousands there.

can browse the many lovely clothes,

think about tackling one of the busy

shopping malls. The benefit also, is that

you get friendly and local service.

Casper very recently opened its doors on

the main shopping street in Alfaz (on the

right hand side going up). It was the idea

of Milica Valentin and Mocanu Anca, who

are a lovely young couple, originally from

Romania. The layout of the shop and

the decoration is all their own work and it

really does look the business. The shop

is both modern and inviting and looks

very professional. In fact it would not

look out of place in Oxford Street in

London.

There is a choice of good quality ladies

and gents’ fashions, with stock brought it

from around Europe. Some of the cloth-

ing comes from France,

Germany and Poland in

addition to homeland Spain.

Shoes come from Germany,

better! You can have a pre-

The Yorkshire Pride Pubs celebrate 20 years since they

joined the success story of the British Benidorm Fiestas

right from the very beggining.

Talking with the owner Tad he told me "It was in 1994

that the Wooky Hollow had begun the Fiesta Party for

the Brits." "Many people don't know but they were the

original bar that actually started the fiestas in the New

Town area of Benidorm."

Attracting an older generation of British visitors who

have been coming to Benidorm in November for many

years the Fiesta Party seemed to develop as a bigger

event each and every year. Tad said " The Yorkshire

Pride 1 had the first year in 1994 and we experienced

what was the spill over from the Fiesta Party and could

not believe how big the event was."

The Yorkshire Pride 1 is located directly opposite the

Wooky Hollow, Tad continued to say " I was fortunate to

of had the benefit of the massive numbers of people

who were turning up all day on the first Saturday arriv-

ing for an all day party session and then coming back

out at midnight to party right through the night." "There

were too many people for the Wooky to cope with, we

were completely full too". The Fiestas is all weekend

and continues through the next week, it's a non stop

party for five days leading up to the fancy dress day on

Thursday, known as "Brit Day".

The fancy dress costumes are a display of extravagant

ideas, many of which take breath away and look amaz-

ing. The participants spend fortunes on making their

costumes and plan ahead each year trying to come up

with originality and surprise. We have seen all sorts of

themes and ideas from cartoon characters to famous

film stars, last year we had the Queen with Prince

Charles, x Men even a Traffic Cone that was conve-

niently placed in the road allowing passers by to avoid

an obstruction of horse manure.

Many other bars around the area and especially in the

famous English Square joined in with the action with

fancy dress competitions and activities and with live

entertainment every day and night.

Tad told me "the Benidorm fiestas have continued to

grow year after year it's been all down to the people

going home and spreading the word". "Everyone wants

to join in the fun our biggest problem is that you can't

get a flight or a hotel it's all booked up, as soon as peo-

ple get back to the UK they book again for the next

year". The local Police close the road from The Rock

Star End of Calle Gerona down to the Morgans Tavern.

There is also an annual race of waiters carrying a trays

of drinks from the Western Saloon along to Morgans

Tavern. The Mayor of Benidorm will attend for the event

and is normally joined by other local dignitaries

Paco from the

famous Vincent's Corner

Pubs told me he had

started the fiestas in the

first "Vincents" pub situated in the Old Town Benidorm.

He was providing the Brits with live entertainment tradi-

tional music men who went around the Old Town during

the fiestas creating a following and bringing the atmos-

phere back into Vincents pub.

Paco said "I would provide the drinks to the music men

Coffee and Brandy this kept them happy and after a few

years this popular event attracted more and more

British visitors who could actually enjoy themselves and

be part of the annual event."

Year after year it really hit off and Vincents pub was the

meeting place for the British a "Penya" created and this

is where the British Fiesta really started before it

extended into the New Town of Benidorm.

One thing is for sure and that is that the party atmos-

phere of Benidorm Fiestas in the Old Town and the

New Town are equally as vibrant and popular with the

British visitors. It is an amazing place to be and is com-

pletely transformed into a place that oozes with excite-

ment, fun and enjoyment.

Benidorm fiestas has grown even bigger

now with record occupancy levels at

Hotels and Apartments. The original fies-

tas traditionally based around the

"Penyas" where the Spanish groups of

different people from around the area

joined together for five days and nights

of partying in the streets of the old town.

Many local bars and restaurants are

closed to the public and taken over by

the many different "Penyas".

The "Penyas" have been together for

many years although there are a few

more recent one formed. They each

have their own costumes and colours almost

like a club or association.

I spoke to Jaimé owner of the Grill House

Benidorm who was born and bred in

Benidorm. He has been part of a Penya for -

------ years. He enjoys the celebrations each

year together with his friends and family. The

fiesta is a religious celebration of St Jaime

the patron Saint of Benidorm.

Many outside events with live music, tradi-

tional costumes are worn for dancing held

outside the Church, children and families

together take part with dancing.

BENIDORM JOKE SHOPFANCY DRESS TO BUY AND HIRE -NEXT DOOR TO WHY NOT BAR CALLEGERONA

1981 they opened their doors with loads of

different goods imported from the UK, in one

instance their stock was held at Alicante air-

port for smuggling as the weight declared in

Manchester was different from the weight

when arriving at Alicante.

All of the rubber goods that were all made in

China were not allowed into Spain and had

to be sent back because in those days the

goods from China were banned in Spain.

With so much rigmarole and with the open-

ing the business Claire and Ivan were mot so

sure that they had made the right choice by

coming to Spain, even the law said you had

to employee a Spanish person and at this

stage the business really didn't need it.

The business originated in Liverpool with a

Joke Shop with Fancy Dress, Claire's par-

ents were running the business and then the

idea to open abroad. Possibilities were to

open in Ibiza but due to the fact there was no

direct flights from the UK they changed their

plans to Benidorm and came over to find a

premises, it then took 18 months before they

were able to open.

From 1984 the business was very busy with

the visitors of the famous 18-30's groups.

They came along and had regular theme

nights that created a constant stream of

business. Easter was full of Portuguese chil-

dren on school trips aged between 14 & 18

they came for long weekends they liked to

buy things like Wopee Cusions and bangers.

But the kids were causing a lot of problems

stealing, vandalising property and other peti

crimes and eventually with many complaints

from locals the kids vacations from Portugal

were fazed out.

Then came the Russians visiting for their

holidays and being able to buy Jokes was a

novelty unseen in Russia, they loved to

barter on the price.

Claire and Ivan were helpers with "The

Bees" organisation for Entertainment in

Benidorm who started the English Fiestas

with Dany Carr and Jason Kaine from Cafe

Benidorm they supported the Children from

Emaus with donations taken during the fies-

tas from the swear box and other organised

collections.

The entertainers made a show for the

Children at the Fiestas until they stopped

allowing the Children to visit due to changes

in the rules.

33 years on the Benidorm Joke Shop contin-

ues its trade with the same owners and even

more recently were the providers of for the

Benidorm TV Series. You can go along to

see Claire and try before you buy with over

3500 choice of costumes available. You will

be catered for what ever your needs are.

Costumes are available to hire and to buy.

Benidorm Joke Shop are situated in the pas-

sage in front of the Western Saloon leading

down to the Why Not Bar in Calle Gerona.

SELLING A PROPERTY IN SPAIN Selling a property in Spain can be a complicated process, but

there are a number of tools at your disposal that can help you

make sure your property is sold quickly and for its optimum

price.

Make sure you familiarise yourself with the conveyancing

process as well as any implications that could arise from being

a non-resident seller.

We have put together our top tips to get the best out of the

selling process:

Be open to listening to a surveyor It is a good idea to get a good idea of anything that could

affect the sale of your house before you begin the process –

either so that you can fix it before the house goes on the mar-

ket, or so that you are aware of areas that might arise as pos-

sible negotiation points. Make sure that your property is com-

pletely ready for sale.

It is better to sell a property without furniture Prospective buyers will want to build your house into their own

home, and are more likely to want an empty shell.

Presentation is also really important – you need to make sure

you house is tidy at all times, that you de-clutter all areas and

fix those DIY projects you have been meaning to do for a

while.

Don’t sign any exclusivity agreements – contact all the local

agents, as they will all know the area Speak to the agent that

sold you your house as they will have the best knowledge on

how to sell it again. Other local agents will also know the area,

and you want to have as many agents working on promoting

the property as you can as this will optimise the audience that

the property reaches.

Make sure you have all documents ready and prepared Speak to your estate agent and lawyer and make sure you

have all the documents and reports that you are legally obligat-

ed to have in advance – for example, you must have an effi-

ciency energy certificate to confirm the rating of your property.

You will need to pass these on to the estate agent to make

sure that they can answer any and all questions from prospec-

tive buyers. This will also speed up the process once you have

found a suitable buyer.

Be ready for a quick sale Make sure there are no issues before you put the house on

the market, and that anything you haven’t been able to fix is

transparently communicated to prospective buyers. It’s also

really important to make sure you know what you are going to

do when your property is sold – repatriate back to the UK, or

find another home to buy in Spain.

Think about your exchange rate If you are going to repatriate funds from selling your property

back to the UK, you need to be aware that the exchange rate

could fluctuate dramatically between the day you accept an

offer and the day that you complete. Before you put your

house on the market, speak to a currency transfer specialist

such as Smart Currency Exchange, who will be able to talk

you through the best options and offer you a better exchange

rate than your bank. You may also be able to ‘fix’ your rate for

up to a year – ensuring the price of your property in sterling

doesn’t change during the process.

Talk to one of our recommended estate agents for a fullconsultation of their services and advice to sell your prop-

erty - contact is today at Property Plus Tel - 965 020 250

Many people decide to rent a property in Spain in the first

instance and there are a number of reasons why this can be a

good idea. With such amazing deals on offer to rent a property

and with the fact you can get so much more value for your

monthly budget renting it is always a great way to start your new

life living in Spain and whilst you find your feet in your new home

and get used to the way of life, allowing you to search for your

perfect permanent home.

There are a number of rental opportunities from low cost apart-

ments in town centres or to villas by the sea, so you should be

able to find a rental that suits your budget. What’s more, you can

start looking whilst still in the UK, Property Plus not only pro-

vides news and information each week but also displays a host

of available rental properties on line at

www.viatacostablanca.com

There are three main types of rental contracts

Short-term rental – less than three months

Temporary rental – more than three months, but less than one

year

Long-term rental contracts – one-year minimum with the right to

stay up to five years. After the first year, if you wish to end the

contract, you will need to give two months’ notice to the owner

in writing.

Short-term contracts are usually holiday lets and will be charged

by the week. You might find good deals in the winter months, but

be aware that the rents will be far greater during the high sea-

son. Temporary rental contracts are less common, as holiday

rentals bring in higher revenue, but if you are happy to stay for

between three and 11 months, this might be best.

Rents for long-term lets are charged monthly and rental prices

vary from region to region. Rentals are calculated on square

metre. Car parking may be included or available at an extra cost.

You should always view the property before you sign any con-

tract, and if you don’t speak Spanish, try to take an independent

Spanish speaker with you. If it is advertised as furnished, check

what is actually included in the rental. Look carefully at the con-

dition both inside and outside, and ask to see an official gas

safety check certificate, which is issued every five years.

Renting a property in Spain is not very different from renting

elsewhere. You will need to have a Spanish bank account and

your passport, and if you are working, you will need an NIE (tax

identification) number. In these times of economic difficulty,

landlords will require some proof that you have the funds to pay

the rent, and may ask for references.

Spanish Law requires the tenant to give the landlord one

month’s rent in cash as a deposit against damage, and in some

cases more may be legally requested.

Landlords are responsible for any major repair to the property

and its infrastructure. Tenants are expected to pay for small

things, like a washing machine repair; if the machine needs

replacing, the landlord pays.

Literally millions of people rent property in Spain and you can

feel confident that the law is weighted on the side of the tenant

(except in cases of failure to pay the rent). Renting is a good

way to spend time in your chosen area without capital outlay.

Most foreigners go on to purchase a property, but some prefer

to continue renting, as they don’t have to worry about mainte-

nance and have the freedom to move elsewhere without having

to sell their home first.

On a final note all of the above is meant as a guide to the main

points you need to consider when renting in Spain. As with all

matters that are this important, we recommend that you consult

a legal professional before you sign any contracts. We can put

you in touch with a reputable lawyer who you can consult on all

your legal matters. E mail us - [email protected]

MOVING YOUR PETS TO SPAINhe idea of moving to Spain without your pets is unbearable.

Pets are a big part of the family, and many people will do any-

thing so they can to ensure their pet can join on their adven-

ture to a new land!

Spain is a very dog friendly nation and you will see every type

of breed and size of dog, many of the smaller breeds suit

apartments and as the majority of Spanish live in apartments,

all sorts of chihuahuas, dachshunds and toy poodles are to be

seen in the towns and cities.

It is easy to bring your dog to

Spain from the UK with a

pet passport. In fact, you

can bring up to 5 pets into Spain,

providing all have had

the required vaccina-

tions and carry

the right docu-

mentation.

Rabies exists

on the Spanish

peninsular, so

the authorities

consider medical

certificates and

other controls as of

prime importance

when allowing a pet into

the country.

The various terms for pets in

Spain are mascota, animal de

compania or animales domesti-

cos. The EU pet passport allows

you to move your cat, dog or ferret

across all EU borders and it comes in the form of a booklet

which contains required information about the animal, such as

an identification number and proof that it has been vaccinated

against rabies.

You should contact your vet who will be able to explain the

procedure and be sure to allow ample time for vaccinations

before you plan to move to Spain. This pet passport is valid for

the lifetime of your pet, providing that the rabies vaccination is

current or has been renewed accord-

ing to the legal requirements. If you

are bringing rabbits or rodents with

you, they do not need a passport but

you must declare them at the border.

All animals imported into Spain must

be older than 3 months.

Keeping dogs or cats in Spain is not a

problem and you may well get to

know your neighbours when you are

out walking your dog. In the country-

side, most people have both dogs and

cats but often the dogs

will be kept on a

running chain out-

side the house.

Hunting is a

popular pursuit

here and many

farmers and

others keep

hunting dogs in

kennels away from their house.

Sadly, there are a number of abandoned

pets and often expats are tempted to

take them in, especially cats. Be aware

that this can become a costly affair and

once you give an animal a home, it becomes

your responsibility. Vets’ fees in Spain are

cheaper than in the UK, but taking in an animal

that may have an underlying medical problem can become

expensive. Generally vets in Spain offer a very good compre-

hensive service and will be able to microchip any pet you

adopt. You will find vets in almost every town, and some have

a 24 hour emergency service. Please note though, there are

also numerous feral cats and dogs who fend for themselves

and should be left alone.

Horses are amongst the most popular animals in Spain and

you will usually find suitable pasture and stabling should you

wish to bring your horses over, though you should consider the

climate which is different from the UK and which your horse

might find difficult to adapt to… this also applies to cats and

dogs of course.

Pet food is widely available in supermarkets but you might

consider buying in bulk from pet food suppliers. Be sure to

check the ingredients carefully, as you would in the UK, though

you will find high quality pet food available online and from

local outlets.

Your pet will take

time to adapt to their

new surroundings

and terrain, just like

us humans. Make

sure there is shade

outside your home

and try to keep as

much as possible to

its normal routine.

There is no reason

why you and your

pet should not enjoy

a long and happy life

here - many, many

thousands already

La Roca Restaurant

Cami vell del Far, 2, 03581 El Albir

“Wonderful and excellent”Reviewed 25 October 2014Earlier tonight we were at the restaurant La Roca in Albir and

had a meal out of the ordinary everything was absolutely per-

fect from food to waiters , we were 2 norwegian and 4

Englishmen out to eat and we were certainly not disappointed,

we ordered steak with red wine sauce chicken cajun and ribs,

with the recommended chocolate muffin for desert and we can

not brag enough about the food and service thanks to chef

and waiter for a wonderful evening

“Excellent food and service”Reviewed 22 October 2014I go to this restaurant every time I go to Albir and have always

had excellent meals. I generally chose the ribs which just fall

off the bone and are served with roasted vegetables and pota-

toes of your choice. My husband always has steak and says

that it is one of the best ever. The chef always comes out to

ask if we are enjoying our meal and the last time we went he

saw that my husband had eating most of his chips and asked

if he wanted more. We have always had the same waitress

who is lovely and speaks excellent English along with other

languages and they have a good selection of wines and spirits.

The food is very reasonable, something like 12 euros for a

main course maybe 18 for steake and is right on the sea front

so an excellent location.

You can sit outside on warm evenings or inside on chilly

evenings. It is perfect and we highly recommend it

“Ribs To Die For”Reviewed 16 October 2014Once again whilst in Albir we visited La Roca - twice.

Unfortunately, I only ever have the Jamaican spare ribs as

they are to die for. The menu caters for all tastes and one day

I will be adventurous and try the other meals available on the

menu. The service is superb, the location is lovely and the

food out of this world. If you haven't tried it, you don't know

what you are missing.

“Wonderful Restaraunt - JamaicanSuper Ribs Superb”

Reviewed 12 September 2014My partner and I always head to the La Roca Restaraunt

whenever we visit Benidorm / Albir.

The Restaurant serves up the most superb ribs although the

steaks are also to die for.

The great sea views from the terrace and excellent friendly

service only add to an always great experience.

We shall be back on 1 March 2015 :)

Restaurante ClassicaGourmet

Av del Albir,143, El Albir“Excellent”

Reviewed 23 October 2014Very good food, good price . We had the menu of the day

which included wine and all four of us were impressed. Nice

surroundings and we could take the dog on the veranda at the

back. Only thing to be aware of is their prices are quoted before

tax so you need to add ten percent. Unassuming frontage but

don't let that fool you - this is a very nice restaurant. We are

regular visitors to Albir and managed to miss this in the past but

not any more!

“First class meal”Reviewed 2 October 2014This was our first time to this restaurant in Albir, we decided to

go for the fixed menu which started with ali oli and bread this

was followed by 3 more courses complete with wine and fin-

ished with coffee.

“dining out”Reviewed 16 September 2014love, love, love Classica Gourmet .. I live very close and never

tire of the great menu, their bread and garlic mayo´is the best

around :)

“If there was a 3.5 rating......”Reviewed 8 September 2014This place was better than average but I wouldn't quite say it

ticked every box for "very good". The food was nice, the staff

were friendly and you could definitely do worse. I'll still give it a

4 as it was better than average and i'd go back happily but only

after exhausting any other interesting options.

“Lovely”Reviewed 31 August 2014We were taken there by family who live in Almafra and go there

frequently. Lovely warm welcome. The food was tasty and well

cooked. Excellent value for money.

Bar Marianos

Calle Gerona 49, local 8,9,10,Benidorm,

“24 hour munch”Reviewed 20 October 2014Marianos is the place to go at 3 am when you need to eat after

a long night on the town. Eat in or take out - it's up to you.

Portions are massive and are really great value for money. The

garlic bread they put out on the counter as you wait for your

take away is absolutely gorgeous but beware you don't gorge

or you won't have room for your chicken curry, rice and chips :)

“magic marianos”Reviewed 19 October 2014marianos is the place to go morning, noon and night for great

food,me and the two mates went here every night of our 5

night stay, chicken kebabs r brill ,fish and chips yum even had

chips and gravy,delicious,good prices,quick service,polite

staff,try it u wont b dissapointed.

“Little gem”Reviewed 18 October 2014Every body was talking about this place so we gave it a try.

Two euro's for a good English breakfast and fresh orange

juice. They also have a large English/Spanish menu, the serv-

ice was good and you can also buy food to take down to the

beach which is just down the road

“better than it looks”Reviewed 15 October 2014i hope i don't do this place a disservice by saying it looks like a

rough and ready cafe. But the food is very good, massive por-

tions, cheap prices and the service was excellent. I enjoyed

eating here.

“A must if you want food”Reviewed 14 October 2014Staff really quick and helpful. Loved the breakfast for two

euros. Plus its proper bacon which was heaven.

“A little gem.”Reviewed 13 October 2014I'm glad I found this place luckily it was not far from my apts,

the 2 euro breakfast including juice was great value, the serv-

ice was good though sometimes the guys seemed rushed off

their feet but that was down to it being so popular,my wife

thought the chicken off the spit was among the best she's ever

tasted, " that's a great compliment as she's very fussy", I only

wish that I'd tried more of their fare, but that's for another day

as when I'm back over there I certainly will be visiting.

Socially and romantically you're on top form, and you'll pull out all the stops to

make life interesting and rewarding. If you feel that not everyone is on your side,

stand back and see if you can do things differently. If not, who cares? The world

is your oyster now.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

No matter how hard you try and no matter how much you try to accommodate

others, there will always be someone who simply doesn't agree with your opin-

ions or your methods. Maybe its time to do what pleases you. Your tried and

tested methods work. Stick to them.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Your emotional state could have a bearing on decisions you're making this week,

and although your confidence in yourself is growing, there's nothing wrong with

letting others do some of the running. You're on the ball over practical matters,

so display the insight that sets you apart from others.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

You're starting to feel that even the people you rely on the most are avoiding

you. Are they, or are you just being a bit paranoid because things haven't

panned out in the way you'd imagined. Take a step back, take a deep breath

and assess your present position.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Don't allow minor pressures at home to grow into something more. You're going

all out to ring the changes in a positive way, so don't allow distractions to sway

you from the path. See the adventure not the fear when embarking on new chal-

lenges. Think ahead.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

It would be wise to listen more closely to what's being said this week, as reading

between the lines will give you the edge on others when it comes to making deci-

sions over work and money. You have tremendous staying power, which is just

what bosses are looking for.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

Clear the decks for action and set things up personally and professionally.

Certain individuals will be difficult to read this week, but positive thinking pays off

and leaves you feeling calm and focused as opposed to irritated and annoyed.

Enjoy the weekend.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

You're determined to make professional progress this week in the hope you'll

impress bosses enough to give you the promotion you feel you richly deserve.

Focus on your ultimate objectives and it may well be the week where your wish-

es come true. In love too!

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

Although you're more than capable of working alone, being part of a team makes

you feel that you belong and you like the camaraderie it brings. Don't allow slight

delays in your plans for the future to get you down. It's only temporary. Keep

your eye on the brass ring.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

Progress in the career zone will depend on your ability to think along completely

new channels. You're ready for a change so you'll see this as an invitation to go

in a new direction. It's been a swings and roundabout year so far, but it's finally

levelling out.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

Get ready for a busy week at work and an even busier week socially. You don't

feel you're up for change in the career zone, as too many emotional situations in

recent weeks have washed you out, but dealt with correctly, it may be the making

of you. Take it as it comes.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

You've been mulling over the changes you want to make, across the board of

your life, but even thinking about them has worn you out. Attempt things in sec-

tions. Rome wasn't built in a day remember, so slow and steady wins the race.

Start with love the rest will follow.

Breast cancer is one of the most common

forms of cancer in woman and is responsi-

ble for approximately 12,000 deaths in the

UK every year.

The chance of recovery is greatly influenced

by early detection. You can help yourself by

being breast aware – this means getting used

to the normal shape and size of your breasts.

Instead of examining your breasts monthly for

abnormalities, you should do more regular

checks so you become familiar of what is nor-

mal for you. Be aware of their appearance and

texture, and note that these can change

through the menstrual cycle.

Be aware of:

General changes:

• One breast suddenly getsbigger than the other.• Dimpling or puckering ofthe skin.

Breast lumps:

• Any breast lumps, espe-cially those not associatedwith the menstrual cycle.

Nipple changes:

• In-turning of the nipple.• Differences in the position or shape of thenipple.• Colour changes.• Rashes - these are uncommon, though thenipple canbe subject to eczema. A condition calledPaget’s diseasethat is cancerous can also cause a nipplerash. • Discharge.

Should you become aware of any breast

changes, however slight, it is advisable

to see your Family Doctor without

delay.

There may be a simple reason for

these changes (something that can

be easily treated) but prompt

diagnosis can make a massive

difference to prognosis should

any changes be due to breast

cancer.

SLAPPED CHEEKDISEASE

Slapped cheek disease, otherwise known as

fifth disease or erythema infectiosum, is an

infection caused by the parvovirus B19 virus.

It most commonly occurs in children aged 4-

12 years, but anyone can be affected. Some

people, especially adults, have few or no

symptoms. The infectious period is for 4-20

days before the rash appears

Normally the rash looks like a bright red scald

on one or both cheeks. It looks as if the

cheek(s) have been slapped. Sometimes there

are just a blotchy red patches on the face. The

rash is painless.

Sometimes a faint rash will also appear on

the body, arms, and legs. Occasionally, the

rash on the face and body comes and goes

for up to four weeks. It is more usual for the

rash to disappear within a few days.

Although the rash can look quite dramatic, the

illness itself is usually mild. You may have a

headache or mild temperature for a few days

before the rash appears. Occasionally, mild

pain and stiffness develop in one or more

joints for a few days. This is more common in

adults than children.

The illness may become more serious :

• In children with some types of

hereditary anaemia such as sickle cell dis-

ease, beta-thalassaemia and hereditary sphe-

rocytosis. This virus can cause these types of

anaemia to become suddenly much worse.

• In people with a weakened immune

system. If you have leukaemia or cancer, have

had an organ transplant or have HIV infection

then you may develop a more serious illness

with this infection.

• In pregnant women. Most pregnant

women are immune to this virus, or will not be

seriously affected if they become infected by

it. However, like some other viruses, the virus

that causes slapped cheek disease can some-

times harm an unborn child. Miscarriage is

more common in women who are infected with

this virus before 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Therefore, if you are pregnant, keep away

from people who have slapped cheek disease.

If you are pregnant and have been in contact

with a person with the virus then your doctor

may arrange for you to have a blood test.

Where have all the volunteers gone? Coming to the end of September and we havehad a very long hot summer till this last week!Yet throughout the summer the backbone ofour group has always been the volunteers.Without them we cannot do the good work thatsaves the lives of many Spanish dogs. Yet nowthey have just vanished, so where have theygone? Many people who live here don’t evenknow that Benidorm has a dog pound to try tohelp save the lives of the stray and abandoneddogs that would litter the streets. We need tolet you know that you can help. Volunteerscome and walk the dogs and they come frommany places, residents, tourists and peoplejust wanting to do something different and thatperson could be you and help us fill the hugegap that we have in helpers. Many of whom have been students here overthe summer filling in the jobs in your bars andrestaurants and getting the chance to learnEnglish. Now it can be your turn to give a littleback to this community. So what is BenidormDog Homing? Benidorm dog pound is just out-side this popular holiday resort.

A very short taxi ride from the main hotels andwe are always in need of volunteers to walkthe dogs in our care. SPAP Benidorm runs thepound to look after animals and they have apolicy to protect and not destroy animals. However the shelter provides extremely basicfacilities, food is donated from hotels, medicalcare is limited and it is difficult to fully look afterup to 300 or more animals.

Benidorm Dog Homing are the volunteers whowalk the dogs and give vital support. We needyou to spare a bit of your time to help socializethese dogs, take them for a walk and showthem that humans can give love too. It’s notjust about coming walking, let your fingers helpa dog find a home too! Because being a cyber-buddy is a very important job too.

I often get asked what a cyber-buddy has to doand I reply ‘Imagine this was your dog and youhad to search for a new home, where wouldyou try, what would you do and then pleasejust give it a go and keep yourdog’s posts active on BenidormDog Homing and other sites afew times a week’ That is thebasic job description but what itmeans to the dogs is a chance, hope, a future as without acyber-buddy on their side it isharder for them to be noticed

and their posts slip away deep into the pageand they become invisible, forgotten and NoHope!

You can find out more about this vital supportyou can give from anywhere in the world byjoining our Facebook page ‘Benidorm DogHoming’ and looking through all our dogs whoare in need of a Buddy and a home. Just men-tion on the dogs post that you want to be theirbuddy and I will show you all the informationyou need and it only takes a few minutes ofyour time a few days a week. Your help doesmake a difference and at the happy endingtime when a new home is found for your dog,you get to celebrate too! Then the volunteerscan take over and with our many languageskills we can help get a dog passported and offon its travels to a new home. We do need helpand you can make a donation using PayPal [email protected] or contact us onFacebook to find out more about our dogs inneed! You can help with donations usingPayPal to [email protected] or contactus on Facebook to find out more about ourdogs in need! For me walking the dogs gaveme connections in this country and help that Inever knew I needed. SO being a volunteer isnot just about the dogs it’s about us humanstoo. So now it’s your turn to help, here are TheWI!

SaltitosThis loving guy has been with us over 2 years

now and in that time he has had it rough!

He became very ill last winter and fortunately

the volunteers managed to get the money

together to get him tested and treated. Now we

are approaching another cold winter on a con-

crete floor for him andw e are worried!

He has an illness that untreated does kill but

with treatment and just one tablet a day then

this lovely boy can enjoy his walks and loving

times. He is always so happy to see you and

he gets on well with other dogs too, Now is the

time that we really need to find a great foster

home for him and hopefully that ‘forever

home’. With over 300 comments on his face-

book profile he has many fans and friends just

not as yet a loving, caring owner. It could be

Any condition that blockslight from getting to theretina impairs a dog’svision. Corneal diseasesand cataracts fall into thiscategory. Glaucoma, uveitis, and retinal dis-eases are other importantcauses of blindness indogs.

Most causes of blindnesswill not be evident on gen-eral observation of the eyeitself. But there are somesigns that suggest a dogmay not be seeing as wellas before. For example, avisually impaired dog maystep high or with great cau-tion, tread on objects thatnormally are avoided, bump into furniture, andcarry his nose close to the ground. Dogs whonormally catch well may suddenly start to missobjects thrown to them. The inactivity of olderdogs is often attributed simply to old age, butfailing eyesight may also be a cause.Shining abright light into the dog’s eye to test for pupilconstriction is not an accurate test for blind-ness, because the pupil can become smallerfrom a light reflex alone. This doesn’t tell youwhether the dog is able to form a visual image.

One way to test eyesight is to observe the dogin a dark room in which the furniture has beenrearranged. As the dog begins to walk about, see if he moves with confidence or hesitatesand collides with the furniture. Turn on thelights and repeat the test. A completely blinddog will perform the same way on both tests. Adog with some sight will show more confidencewhen the lights are on. Performance testssuch as these give qualitative informationabout eyesight, but the degree of impairmentcan only be determined by veterinary exami-nation.

A diagnosis of blindness or irreversible visionloss is not a catastrophe. The fact is that mostdogs, even those with normal eyesight, do notreally see very well. They rely to a greaterextent on their keen senses of hearing andsmell. These senses take over and actuallybecome more acute as eyesight fails. Thismakes it relatively easy for visually impaireddogs to get around in areas they know. However, a blind dog should not be turnedloose in unfamiliar surroundings or he could beinjured. In the house, try to avoid moving furni-ture, because your dog will have a “mentalmap” of where things are. When left outdoors, confine a visually impaired dog to a fencedyard or run. Walking on a leash is safe exer-cise. The dog learns to rely on his owner as a“seeing-eye person.”

It is important to be aware of impending blind-ness while the dog is still able to see. Thisallows time for retraining in basic commandssuch as “stop,” “stay,” and “come.” When thedog actually does go blind, obedience training

QPR defender Rio Ferdinand has been given a three-match ban and fined £25,000 by the Football

Association over comments he posted on Twitter. The 35-year-old former England captain directed a jibe

containing a derogatory reference to women at a Twitter

follower who criticised him last month.

Ferdinand, who has 5.9million followers on Twitter, has

also been ordered to attend an educational programme

by the FA and will be suspended for games against

Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle.

France's Alexander Levy made the ideal start to his bid fora third European Tour title of the season - and second in

China - in the BMW Masters on Thursday.Levy, who won the Volvo China Open in April and the rain-

shortened Portugal Masters three weeks ago, carded a flawless

opening 65 at a damp Lake Malaren to finish seven under par,

one shot ahead of compatriot Romain Wattel, Belgium's Nicolas

Colsaerts and Argentina's Emiliano Grillo.

Starting from the 10th, Levy birdied his first four holes and

picked up another shot at the par-three 17th to reach the turn in

31, before recording further birdies at the second and ninth.

Overall there were 36 goals,3

this Weeks Alfaz Fantasy

Football League. The ratio of

penalties shot up thanks to

Jonathan Moss who awarded

4 pens in the Champions 4-1

Steve´s Team Cowden Red

Devils have spent 5 Weeks at

the Summit of the Fantasy but

their lead at the top has been

slashed to 10 points by the

high flying Vince´s Team Bars

about the bottom of the Table

them trailing Danny´s Team

MIKE ASHLEY WINS CONTROL AFTER -£2MILLION BAILOUT FOR RANGERS

Rangers Football Club have accepted a £2

million sum from Mike Ashley as the club

attempts to steer itself away from administra-

tion.

The club entered a ‘credit facility agreement’

with Ashley’s MASH Holding, which owns

8.92% of Rangers, which will see Ashley gain

the right to appoint two directors to the

Rangers board in exchange.

Finance director Phillip Nash resigned on

Friday and according to today’s Stock

Exchange, Chief Executive Graham Wallace

has also left the club.

Both of the former directors blocked Ashley’s

funding in exchange for trademark rights last

month and were consequently the expected

casualties from Ashley’s latest cash front.

This paves the way for Ashley’s people to

assume influential positions within Rangers,

with former Newcastle United director, and

close friend of Ashley, Derek Llambias in the

frame for a board position.

Legally, Ashley cannot own both Newcastle

United and Rangers dually. Perhaps Ashley’s

growing influence in Rangers could spell the

beginning of the end to his unpopular and

unsupported Newcastle United tenure.

However, for now, Ashley’s long term inten-

tions remain unclear.

MURRAY GETSINTO LONDON

Andy Murray booked his place in the Barclays

ATP World Tour Finals for a seventh consecu-

tive season after beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-3,

6-3 in the BNP Paribas Masters third round on

Thursday.

The Briton, who lost in straight sets at

Wimbledon, beat the Bulgarian 6-3 6-3 to

reach the quarter-finals.

The 27-year-old Scot, seeking to win his fourth

title in six weeks, needed to reach the last

eight to qualify for the season-ending finals in

London.

Murray joins Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer,

Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic in the elite

eight-man field; the remaining three berths are

still up for grabs.

The world number eight was in such good

form he saw off Dimitrov in 69 minutes - two

minutes faster than his second-round win over

Julien Benneteau - to secure his 20th win in

22 matches.

Murray did not face a break point during the

69-minute encounter with his Bulgarian oppo-

nent, and won 93 per cent of his first-service

points (27 of 29). Murray, seeded eighth in

Paris, will face Novak Djokovic or Gael Monfils

in the last eight in France.

David Ferrer continues his push to qualify for

London with his defeat of fellow Spaniard

Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 6-2 in their third-

round encounter.

Fifth seed Tomas Berdych, who is eighth in

the Race To London standings, will guarantee

his place at the season finale by reaching the

semi-finals this week.

ASHLEY SET TO TAKE CONTROL OFRIGHTS TO FAMOUS EMBLEMS

The Newcastle United supremo

has come under increasing

scrutiny over his influence

at Ibrox after manoeu-

vring to take effective

control of The Rangers

Football Club Ltd (TRFC),

a subsidiary that holds

the club retail rights.

Fans' groups are known to

be angry that Mr Ashley has

been handed increasing power

at Ibrox in exchange for a

£2 million emergency loan to the club,

which has to be paid off in six months.

It has emerged his hold over TRFC

gives him effective control of

Rangers Retail Limited, which has

an exclusive licence to use both

Rangers crests - including the

famous "Ready" logo - on merchan-

dise.

The rights relate to the RFC Scroll

crest and the circular "Ready" crest.

Amended trademark documents reveal the

licence representatives are IBML Legal, part of

Sports Direct's licensing division.

Continued from Back Page...Newcastle United players give RyanTaylor a standing ovation after stunningcomeback

The Scouser was playing his first game for

26 months after a double knee injury shat-

tered his career as United moved into the last

eight of the League Cup.

But after Taylor took part in a TV interview on

the field his team-mates waited behind to

clap him back into the away dressing room.

He said: “It’s a dream come true. Two years

of hard graft has paid off. What a perform-

ance that was.”

Taylor’s appearance was his first since 2012

when he was hurt against Atromitos in the

Europa League.

He added: “All that time in the gym on my

own, there til 4pm from 7am, it’s all worth it.

“To get my pads and boots back on has been

a dream come true.”

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew paid tribute

to Taylor's determination to make a recovery

in his post-match news conference.

"Obviously he was outstanding," he said.

"Professional footballers sometimes get a

bad press for the way they conduct them-

selves and their professionalism, but you are

talking about a guy who, for two years, has

been injured and conducted himself in the

best possible manner.

"He came in with a smile on his face, encour-

aged players in those two years. He got his

reward because of that professionalism. He

has only had one-and-a-half reserve games,

and to play like he did was absolutely out-

standing and a credit to himself.

"Our staff have been very impressed with his

conduct. He is a beacon of light in profes-

sional football."

TAYLOR PRAISED AFTER INJURYNIGHTMARE

TOTTENHAM MAKEQUARTERS

Tottenham booked a CapitalOne Cup quarter-final show-down with Newcastle afterdefeating Brighton 2-0 atWhite Hart Lane thanks togoals from Erik Lamela andHarry Kane.

Lamela, who scored twice in the

Europa League last week, came

off the bench at half-time and

burst on to Roberto Soldado's

pass before firing past keeper

Christian Walton on 54 minutes.

Kane, who went one better than

Lamela against Asteras Tripolis

in Europe, grabbing a hat-trick,

tapped home a second from

Andros Townsend's deflected

cross after Soldado had

smashed a shot against the crossbar.

A much-changed Spurs side bossed the game,

with Brighton's best chance falling to Kazenga

LuaLua in the first half, but his shot sailed high

over the bar from a tight angle.

Only defender Jan Vertonghen survived from

the 2-1 home defeat at home to Newcastle on

Sunday, which has seen Tottenham widely crit-

icised for a lack of passion and mental strength.

But Maurico Pochettino's team, with 10

changes, seemed determined to prove their

doubters wrong and Kane, Aaron Lennon and

Vertonghen all had shots on target blocked in

the opening period.

LuaLua may have done better when he latched

onto a long diagonal pass on 16 minutes and

the same could be said for Danny Holla, who

failed to hit the target with a well-placed free-

kick from distance.

Lamela replaced Lennon, who appeared to

have a knock, at the break and he immediately

looked threatening before finding only his fourth

goal for the club since a £28million move from

Roma in 2013.

Brighton had a decent shout for a penalty when

Federico Fazio looked to have fouled LuaLua

inside the box, but it was waved away by refer-

ee Mark Clattenberg, who gave the same reac-

tion to Soldado's protests shortly after.

But Kane put the game beyond the visitors and

extended his tally as Spurs' top-scorer this sea-

son - tapping home his seventh goal of the

campaign and fourth in three games. CAPITAL ONE CUP DRAWNewcastle will travel to Tottenham in the

Capital One Cup quarter-finals after beating

holders Manchester City on Wednesday.

There will also be a clash between League

leaders as Championship pace-setters Derby

were rewarded for their stunning comeback at

Fulham with a home tie against Chelsea, who

are currently top of the Premier League stand-

ings.

Bournemouth, the third of the non-Premier

League sides left in the competition, dumped

out West Brom and the Championship team

will try to pull off another upset when they play

host to eight-time winners Liverpool at the

Goldsands Stadium.

And the Sheffield United fans will also be hop-

ing for a shock at Bramall Lane, where last

season's FA Cup semi-finalists will play host

to Southampton as they look to reach the last

four of another domestic Cup competition.

Matches to be played in the week commenc-

ing December 15.

Capital One Cup quarter-final draw:

Derby v Chelsea

Tottenham v Newcastle

Bournemouth v Liverpool

Sheffield United v Southampton

Southampton reached the Capital One Cupquarter-finals with a 3-2 victory over Stokeat the Britannia Stadium. This game was much more eventful than

Saturday's 1-0 Premier League victory at St

Mary's, with Graziano Pelle netting his second

two minutes from time to send Saints through.

Saints looked in control at half-time at two up

through Pelle and Shane Long's first for the

club but Stoke levelled through Steven Nzonzi

and Mame Biram Diouf.

However, moments after substitute Peter

Crouch was sent off, Pelle grabbed his second

to earn Southampton their ninth win in 10

games.

Both managers resisted the temptation to

make wholesale changes, with 16 of the play-

ers on show having started at the weekend..

Mark Hughes gave Bojan Krkic a rare start,

the former Barcelona forward appearing for

the first time in nearly a month, while

Saturday's goalscorer, Sadio Mane, missed

out with a knock so Long came in for the visi-

tors.

Despite the strong sides, there were plenty of

empty seats at the Britannia Stadium,

although more than 2,000 Southampton fans

had made the trip

An understrength Newcastle pulled off a bigCapital One Cup shock by beating holders

Manchester City 2-0 to book their place in thequarter-finals.

United boss Alan Pardew fielded an extremelyinexperienced side, featuring six changes fromthe weekend league win at Tottenham, but hewas rewarded with an energetic and committeddisplay from his youthful team.

The win continues Newcastle's recent rejuvina-

tion under Pardew, who has now overseen threesuccessive victories, having previously man-aged just two in the previous nine, both in theLeague Cup.

In contrast, it is worrying times for City, whothrew away a two-goal lead to draw againstCSKA Moscow in the Champions League andlost 2-1 at West Ham in the Premier League intheir two games prior to this defeat.
