    Johannesburg is hosting its

    16th Farmfest this weekend!

    Farmfest is a laidback music

festival held each year in the

    second weekend of August.

    Taking place in the woods,

the main stage sits at the

    bottom of a beautiful natural

    amphitheater. The stage was

    made from wood from the

barn that used to stand at

    the top of the hill.

    The typical music played

    at Farmfest includes tradi-

    tional folk and bluegrass to

    modern reggae and fold-fla-

    vored rock nroll. Guests are

welcome to camp on site or

    drive out for the day.

    Farmfest 2013 is expected

    to be another record-break-

    ing year. With Drum Kiva,

    Fire Circle Jams, Dance

    Pavilion Events, Parkin Lot

competitive drills and play coordinated by

area tennis pro, Dave Johnson and followed

by refreshments and prize drawings for top

winners of the Alpine Regional Tennis

    Associations raffle.

Shane Cousineau was the first-prize win-

ner of two tickets to the US Open in New

York, including courtside seating in the

USTA presidential box, lunch in the USTA

    presidential suite, travel voucher and

    overnight accommodations. Second Prize

was awarded to Kathy Passiak who will head

    to Cincinnati for the Southern-Western

Open in mid-August, with overnight accom-

    modations provided. Door prizes, generously

donated by MC Sports and Alpine Tavern &

Eatery & Sports Haus Pub, were won by Erin

    Rogers, Dave Leonardson, and Shane

Cousineau. This event raised $10,800 to help

further the mission of the Alpine Regional

    Tennis Association to improve tennis

resources for area youth and adults, and to

eventually build four adjacent courts for

    regional competitive tournaments. Sheila

Simpson, ARTA board member, stated that

tennis is a life long sport, inexpensive, and

ideal for cardio and overall health, thus help-ing reduce childhood obesity. By hosting

future regional tournaments, we can also

improve the health of the economy by draw-

ing people to this wonderful area. ARTA

board members expressed their gratitude to

the USTA for awarding the unique US Open

tickets to raffle, to the Otsego County

Community Foundation, to all who pur-

chased tickets, to Michaywe in Gaylord for

underwriting the tickets, to Dave and Cathy

Johnson for donating the second prize tick-

ets to the Western-Southern Open, and to

the door prize sponsors. Persons wishing to

join ARTA, enroll in tennis individual or

group lessons, or join in Thursday evening

Cardio-Tennis fun, can contact ARTA presi-

dent Laura Hansmann at 989 619 2629 or

Find resale bargains and one-of-kind itemsat the Bergmann Center Resale Shop

    By Jim Akans

    Many Northern Michigan residents are

    familiar with the outstanding opportunities

provided by the ongoing work of the

Bergmann Center in Charlevoix. The staff at

the non-profit Center assists in building life

skills for individuals with developmental dis-

abilities, with programs that include on-site

    job training and employment opportunities,

    volunteer opportunities, community aware-

ness, daily living skills and enrichment class-

    es.

What many may not be aware of is that

starting in August of 2010, The Bergmann

Center opened a fantastic Resale Shop locat-

ed right next to their main facility on Ance

Road, offering terrific bargains on resale

goods ranging from clothing, furniture and

other household items, to one-of-a-kind new

    products created by local individuals.

    The shop has

    many exciting prod-

    ucts made by indi-

    viduals at the

    Bergmann Center;

such as fire startersfrom recycled mate-

    rial, furniture paint-

    ed by a local

    woman artist, gaz-

    ing balls made from

    recycled bowing

    balls adorned with

    donated stained

    glass, items from

    clay, handmade

    jewelry, love lights

    made with clear

    stained glass and

    candles, and much

    more.

In addition to a lot of great merchandise,

the Bergmann Center Resale Shop also offers

a great place for individuals in the Centers

program to learn skills on the job, such as

running a cash register and p rocessing

inventory. These are valuable skills that will

continue to provide rewards for these indi-

    viduals for years to come.

The Bergmann Center Resale Shop is

located at 8888 Ance Road in Charlevoix, and

is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am

to 4 pm, and the staff accepts item donations

    during those hours as well.

For additional information call (231) 547-

    9624 or visit www.bergmanncenter.org and

    follow the Resale Shop link.

You've been wowed with fireworks, you've been awed by

laser light shows, you've sent your wishes aloft on Chinese

lanterns. And now, its time to celebrate the majesty of the

    dark.

The Straits of Mackinac area enjoys the unique and presti-

gious distinction of being home to one of only eight

International Dark Sky Parks in the U.S., and one of just 11 in

the world, at Emmet Countys Headlands park property.

In celebration of protecting the night sky, the communities

of Mackinaw City and St. Ignace are taking part in a friendly

Lights Out Across the Straits! challenge set for Monday,

    Aug. 12, 2013 from 10:30-11:30 p.m.

The challenge? See which community can achieve greater

darkness. The event is timed to coincide with the peak of the

Perseid Meteor Shower on Aug. 12, the most popular meteor

shower of the year. Area residents, guests and business own-

ers can show their support by signing a Lights Out Pledge

and posting their support in residence windows or at the

    entrance to business locations.

The pledge forms and complete information is available at

the Chamber Offices in both Mackinaw City and St. Ignace,

and online at www.emmetcounty.org. Mackinaw Chamber:

226 E. Central Ave., Mackinaw City; St. Ignace Chamber: 560

    N. State St., St. Ignace. The bottom of the forms can be

returned to the chambers or mailed (instructions are on the

    form).

Signing the pledge means you agree to turn out your out-

door lights and inhibit any indoor light from spilling outside

for one hour, from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m., on Monday, August

12, said Mary Stewart Adams, Dark Sky Park Program

Director at the Headlands. Its free, its fraught with good

will, it saves money, and provides a great way to get to know

    your neighbors.

The Lights Out initiative, led by Emmet County, includes

the joint efforts of St. Ignace and Mackinaw City Mayors and

Village Managers, Council Members, both Chambers of

Commerce, Visitors Bureaus, and Downtown DevelopmentAuthorities, as well as the Mackinac Bridge Authority and the

    Michigan Department of Transportation.

Truly it takes the entire community to protect the vast

    and inspiring resource of the

deep, dark night sky that we

    enjoy in the Straits area,

    Adams said.
