GAYLORD The North StarLeague recently announcedthe 2011 All-League footballroster and, not surprisingly, undefeated league championMio is well-represented onthe roster along with Atlanta,

which finished 2-3 in theleague and in a third-place

    tie with Arenac Eastern andAuGres-Sims.

Mio senior quarterbackand linebacker Grant Price, one of the most dynamic ath-letes to come through theleague ranks in a while, waschosen as a first-team selec-tion on both sides of the ball.

The 6-foot-1, 205-poundPrice rumbled to 1,356 yardsrushing while scoring 20 ofMios touchdowns and alsoreaching the end zone on 18conversion attempts to scorea whopping 156 points. Pricehelped the Thunderbolts topost a 7-3 mark and earn aplayoff berth this season.

    Price also connected on 82

of 174 passes for 1,234 yardsand 16 more touchdownsthrough the air. He threw justfour interceptions.

Two other Mio players who were recognized as two-wayfirst-team selections for Mio

were senior lineman EliKoslakiewicz andreceiver/safety Tod Rondo.

The 6-foot-1, 260-poundKoslakiewicz was a force inthe trenches on both sides ofthe ball for the Thunderboltsand a repeat first-team pickon defense. The 5-11, 160-pound Rondo was among theteam leaders as a receiver,

grabbing 27 aerials for 520yards and 11 scores, and as asafety, taking part in 75 tack-les with two interceptions.

Other first-team selectionsfrom Mio on offense includ-ed senior Clarence Smith atrunning back along with sen-ior Christian Norum and jun-ior Nick Mangutz on the line.On defense, Mio had six play-ers including senior tackleTravis Ellis, junior linebacker

Aaron Fox and sophomorecornerback Seth Thomey inaddition to Price,Koslakiewicz and Rondo. The5-11, 150-pound Thomey, acandidate for this yearsSuper Sophomore Award

announced annually as partof the Weekly Choice All-AreaTeam, had six interceptionsand two fumble recoveriesduring the season.

Atlanta had four first-teamplayers on the All-League

roster and nine players alltogether, including secondteam and honorable mentionpicks [see full 2011 NSL All-League roster below].

Huskie junior quarterbackGarrett Badgero was themost prolific passer in theleague and one of the mostaccurate throwers in theentire region. Badgero con-

nected on 121-of-188attempts for 1,906 yards innine games with 19 TDs and11 interceptions. He also hadanother 348 yards rushing.

Badgero was also a first-team pick in the SpecialTeams category for hisbooming punts. Badgeropunted 26 times and aver-aged nearly 40 yards perboot, which is quite good forthe high school level.

Senior receivers JustinKlein and Trenton Janiga

were also a first-team picksfor Atlanta. Klein pulled in 37aerials for 683 yards with 10scores and seven conversions

    while Janiga hauled in a

    team-high 44 passes for ateam-high 764 yards and sixTDs.

The versatile Klein wasalso second-team at-largepick on defense, where hehad three interceptions and

three fumble recoveries to go with 50 tackles, and a sec-ond-team special teams pickfor his punt and kick returns.

    Junior Brock Baum was a

first-team selection for theHuskies at linebacker, wherehis explosive hits not onlyaccounted for a whopping115 tackles this season with

an interception and a fumblerecovery, but also six causedfumbles. Baum obviouslyhits with the force of a bomb.

GRAYLING In the end, itwas just too good an oppor-tunity to pass up.

Grayling senior Zane Tobininked his name to a Letter ofIntent last week to play col-lege hoops for Siena HeightsUniversity at the universitysmain campus in Adrian. Theleft-handed 6-foot-4 pointguard with the soft shot andthe hard-nosed style of playchose Siena Heights becausehe liked everything about it:the campus, the youngcoaches, and especially thein-your-face, up-tempo styleof play that is nearly identicalto Grayling.

And the topper was thattwo of his closest buddiesfrom spring AAU ball Fulton Middleton seniorsCory Hungerford and Tyler

Waldon are also planning toplay hoops there.

It was the whole package,Zane said in a phone inter-view on Monday eveningafter practice. The coaching

staff was really welcoming tome when I went down thereand the campus was greatand the whole atmosphere ofthe place. The buildings arenice and the campus is com-pact but spread out at thesame time.

Plus, I like the way theyplay basketball and two ofmy buddies from AAU aregoing there.

Tobin certainly has thetools to be a high-impactplayer for the Saints, who arepart of the NAIA and play inthe highly competitive

    Wolverine-Hoosier AthleticConference along with

Aquinas, Concordia,Cornerstone, Davenport,Madonna, NorthwesternOhio, University ofMichigan-Dearborn andIndiana Tech.

Last year, Zane helpedGrayling post a 19-5 recordand win the schools first dis-trict championship since2005 with his accurate shoot-ing, his pinpoint passing andhis up-close-and-personal

defensive pressure. Tobinsstats reveal a strong, deter-mined all-around player whoknows how to find openspaces to shoot and who alsoknows how to make everyonearound him on the floor bet-ter.

Tobin averaged 14 pointslast season as the startingpoint guard while hitting 48percent of his 2-point shotsand a whopping 41 percentof his 3-point attempts. He

was unselfish, notching 3.3assists per game for the up-tempo Vikings and he waszealous on defense, too, aver-aging 2 steals per game.

Grayling coach Rich Moffitbelieves Tobin is just the kindof player the Saints programis looking for from theirrecruits.

This is a great fit for Zane, both academically and ath-letically, Moffit said. Zanehas spent countless hours inthe gym and its great to seehim rewarded for his hard

    work.Tobin can play shooting

guard and wing as well as thepoint. His most likely role atSiena Heights will be a 2-3combination, allowing him

the opportunity to make thetwine dance from theperimeter and also make thedeadly penetrations to thehole that Viking fans are soaccustomed to seeing.

    Tobin is pumped, ofcourse.

    Its really exciting, he

said. They have youngcoaches there who are reallygood at communicating andtheres a lot of energy in theprogram. Their style is exact-ly like what coach Moffit runs

with in-your-face defenseand pushing the ball downthe floor.

Tobin will have an oppor-tunity to vie for a varsity posi-tion as a freshman, thoughmost freshmen play JV theirfirst year. Either way, Zaneplans to apply himself fromthe start and do whatever isnecessary to keep improving

every facet of his game andput himself in position tohelp when called upon.

As for the coming highschool hoops season, Zane isreally pumped about that, too. With several playersreturning from last yearshighly successful team suchas fellow seniors Steven Enos,Riley Zigila and 6-foot-8 cen-ter Griffin Dean, among oth-ers, there is naturally loads ofoptimism.

The seniors have talked with coach Moffit and ourmain goals are to get the Lake

Michigan championship, repeat as district champs andget back to the regionalfinals, he said. Hopefully

well get the chance to faceCadillac again (in the region-al finals) and get somerevenge.

Tobin says he hasnt set anypersonal goals in terms ofscoring or any other stats.

I dont care how manypoints I score a game as longas we win, he said. My No. 1goal is to lead the team atpoint guard. Its all about the

    wins, not the stats.

    KALKASKA The Inland

Lakes girls ran into a verytough opponent in the Class

C regional semifinals held atKalkaska last Tuesday, Nov.

    8. The Bulldogs, who hadreversed three regular-sea-

son losses and beatJohannesburg-Lewiston to win the district title, faced

Pine River in the regionalround and lost 24-26, 25-15,

    25-20, 25-12.I-Lakes, which finished

    with a 13-21-9 mark,stunned the favored Bucks

in game one of the semifi-

    nals, edging them by two

points. After Pine River cameback to take game two hand-

ily, I-Lakes battled the Bucksto the wire before losing the

critical game three.Pine River improved to 41-

12-5 with the win andadvanced to the regional

finals on Thursday, Nov. 10,against Charlevoix. TheRayders prevailed to earn a

berth in the Class C quarter-finals against Houghton out

    of the U.P.Outside hitter Sandy

Bischoff, who has been inblast mode all season for I-

    Lakes, helped lead the way

in the Pine River match with

five kills. Rebecca Hunt, another chief cog in the

Bulldog wheel of progress in2011, also hammered out

five kills to go with a team-high 21 digs in the back row

and four service aces.Katelynn Brendly aided

the Bulldog cause as well, lacing four kills with threeaces and setter Emily

Griffore generated nineassists. Sarah Bodner cov-

ered the back row like a freshcoat of wax, collecting 16

digs in the match, andBriana Burrus was all over

the place as well, making 13

    digs. Sarah Kolb sent sizzling

    missiles from the stripe dur-

    ing her turns, recording

    three aces on the day.

    I-Lakes coach Stormy

    Dickinson acknowledged

that her team went into the

    tournament as an underdog

but the girls played with pas-

sion and purpose and hadnothing to hang their heads

    about after the season-end-

    ing loss.

The girls set the goal to

    be here (at regionals) and

    they made it, Dickinson

    said. They did well regard-

less of what the score was.

    Grayling volleyball team on

    Tuesday, Nov. 8. The Vikings

    of coach Jessica Szymoniak

    faced host Cadillac in the

Class B regional semifinalsand lost in three games.

It was still a notable seasonfor the Vikings, who captured

    the district title the week

    before with a hard-fought

    victory over Roscommon in

    the finals.

    The 2011 Grayling team

    featured super setter Josie

    Swander with cool Rachel

    Cooper, Cara Miller and

    Cierra Prosser firing missiles

    up front while Elaine

    DesEnfants and Shanley

    How MuchInsulation Do IAlready Have?

    Compliments of Ed Wohlfiel

Look into your attic. We start

with the attic because it is usually

easy to add insulation to an attic.

Look into your walls. It is difficult

to add insulation to existing walls

unless: You are planning to add new

siding to your house, or You plan to

finish unfinished space (like a base-

    ment or bonus room).

If so, you need to know whether

the exterior walls are already insu-

lated or not. One method is to use

an electrical outlet on the wall, but

first be sure to turn off the power to

the outlet. Then remove the coverplate and shine a flashlight into the

crack around the outlet box. You

should be able to see whether or

not insulation is in the wall. Also,

    you should check separate outlets

on the first and second floor, and in

old and new parts of the house,

because wall insulation in one wall

    doesn't necessarily mean that it's

everywhere in the house. An alter-

    native to checking through electri-

cal outlets is to remove and then

replace a small section of the exteri-

    or siding.

Look under your floors. Look at

the underside of any floor over an

unheated space like a garage, base-

    ment, or crawlspace. Inspect and

measure the thickness of any insu-

lation you find there. It will most

likely be a fiberglass batt, so multi-

ply the thickness in inches by 3.2 to

find out the R-value (or the R-value

might be visible on a product label).

If the insulation is a foam board or

    sprayed-on foam, use any visible

    label information or multiply the

thickness in inches by 5 to estimate

    the R-value.

    Look at your ductwork. Don't

overlook another area in your home

where energy can be saved - the

ductwork of the heating and air

conditioning system. If the ducts of

    your heating or air-conditioning

    system run through unheated or

    uncooled spaces in your home,

such as attic or crawlspaces, then

the ducts should be insulated. First

check the ductwork for air leaks.

Repair leaking joints first withmechanical fasteners, then seal any

    remaining leaks with water-soluble

    mastic and embedded fiber glass

mesh. Never use gray cloth duct

    tape because it degrades, cracks,

and loses its bond with age. If a

joint has to be accessible for future

    maintenance, use pressure- or

    heat-sensitive aluminum foil tape.

Then wrap the ducts with duct wrap

insulation of R-6 with a vapor

retarder facing on the outer side. All

    joints where sections of insulation

    meet should have overlapped fac-

ings and be tightly sealed with fiber

    glass tape; but avoid compressing

    the insulation, thus reducing its

    thickness and R-value.

Return air ducts are often locat-

ed inside the heated portion of the

house where they don't need to beinsulated, but they should still be

sealed off from air passageways that

    connect to unheated areas. Drywall

    to ductwork connections should be

    inspected because they are often

poor (or nonexistent) and lead to

    unwanted air flows through wall

cavities. If the return air ducts are

located in an unconditioned part of

the building, they should be insu-

    lated.

Look at your pipes. If water pipes

    run through unheated or uncooled

spaces in your home, such as attic

    or crawlspaces, then the pipes

    should be insulated.

    Real Estate

    By Jim Akans

This is an amazing real estate offering. Located just a few miles

northeast of the town of Johannesburg, this Northern Michigan coun-

try estate features a gorgeous two-story home and a huge pole build-

ing set upon 160 acres of rolling terrain that features a mix woodlandsand open areas.

From the arrival at the gated entry located off a paved country road,

its just a short way down the winding driveway to the vistas that open

into a panorama of rolling hills, open grazing lands, woodlands of

hardwoods and pines, and a beautiful two-story traditional style home

beyond. With a quarter section of land, this is a setting that not only

offers incredible beauty and abundant wildlife, it could easily provide

a lifestyle of self-sufficiency with a limitless supply of wood for heat-

ing, ample areas for grazing livestock and horses (the property is

fenced), and plenty of room left over for vegetable gardening.

The home, which was custom built in 1998, offers over 2,700 square

feet of living space on the main two levels, plus a huge walkout base-

ment, with extra height 13-block walls, that could be finished into

additional living area. There are four bedrooms on the upper level,

including a large master bedroom suite with walk-closet and adjoin-

ing bath featuring a garden style tub and separate shower. Each of the

remaining three bedrooms are generously sized, and there is an addi-

tional full bath on the upper level as well.

The main floor is highlighted by a family room with wood stove, a

formal living room with a gas fed fireplace and hardwood flooring that

extends into the adjoining dining area. The kitchen is open to the din-

ing area, and features cabinetry and appliances with pristine white

finishes, and a convenient main level laundry and utility area located

adjacent to the kitchen space. The main level also includes a full bath-

    room.

Other highlights of this home include beautiful, solid wood six-

panel doors throughout the interior, energy efficient Pella brand win-

dows, a central alarm system, and a covered wrap-around porch the

leads to a huge wrap-around open deck area.

The pole building is absolutely enormous, with plenty of space to

store an RV, vehicles, grounds maintenance equipment, and more.

What an amazing country estate. This beautiful home and expan-

sive property is listed at $758,000.
