Coordinator, Huron Pines AmeriCorps, Otsego
Conservation District
By now you are all aware of and hopefully
actively using the five recycling drop-off locations
throughout the county made possible by a millage
passed in November of last year. The Otsego
Conservation District (OCD) is pleased to
announce that the program thus far has been a
huge success!
The most used drop-off site is located in the
City of Gaylord in front of the Discovery Center
and the old Carters building along South Otsego
Avenue. Within a matter of a couple weeks it wasdetermined that both the Mixed Containers and
the Paper, Bags, and Boxes bins would need to be
changed out every other day. The remaining four
sites (located near Hayes Township Hall, in
Vanderbilt by H&H Tube, in Johannesburg at the
Charlton/Chester/Dover Transfer Station, and just
off Old State Road near Waters) are also receiving
regular use necessitating that recycling bins be
pulled and replaced with fresh bins 1-2 times per
week.
And for the most part everyone is doing a great
job of maintaining the sites and ensuring that
only recyclable items are being placed in the
available bins. Otsego County should be proud of
the finesse with which over 140 tons have been
recycled and put back into the economy (as of
August 22).
That said the OCD would like to remind readers
of a few simple guidelines to keep in mind as you
utilize the Otsego County Recycling System:
Styrofoam is not accepted in any of the recy-
cling bins. American Waste/Arrow Sanitation will
recycle Styrofoam for a fee.
When dropping off containers such as plastic
bottles, aluminum cans, or glass, please be sure to
remove these items from any bags.
Plastic bags should be placed in the Paper,
Bags, and Boxes bin and nested within each
other.
If you have a large item that cannot fit into the
window on the recycling bin, please do not leave
it to set at the side of the bin. As long as the item
is not glass, you may break or cut it into smaller
pieces for insertion. Otherwise, contact the OCDfor assistance in finding a proper disposal
method.
Plant plastics such as plant trays and plant
pots are not recyclable at the drop-off sites in
Otsego County. These items can be recycled free
of charge to Otsego County residents at the plant
plastic drop-off site in Emmet County.
Light bulbs are not accepted.
There is a large opening for big pieces of card-
board located to the rear of the Paper, Bags, and
Boxes bin. Please break down your cardboard
boxes before putting them in the bins. It saves
space, fuel, and money!
To learn more about the Otsego County
Recycling Program and what items are accepted,
visit www.otsegorecycling.org. Questions and
comments concerning recycling in Otsego County
can be directed to the Otsego Conservation
District by calling (989) 732-4021 or visiting
www.otsego.org/conservationdistrict and clicking
on Contact Us.

Military Expo Continued...
Last year was the most suc-
cessful year ever for the
Gaylord CROP Hunger Walk,
raising $13,168 of which
$3,200 was given to theOtsego County Food Pantry.
There were 162 walker in the
event, and this years goal is
to have 200 walkers partici-
pate, and if that goal is
reached, an anonymous
donor has committed to give
$500 to the event!
The Annual CROP Hunger
Walk is a community-orient-
ed event sponsored by the
Church World Service, a min-
istry comprised of 36
Christian denominations and
communions joined to do
their part in eradicating
hunger and poverty. Its
about neighbors, families
and friends walking togetherto take a stand against world
hunger.
Some interesting facts;
- Over the past 20 years,
CROP Hunger Walks have
raised more than $294 mil-
lion to help those in need
feed their families.
- $75 can provide emer-
gency food supplies for a
family of five for a month.
- $500 can provide 4,000
pounds of food for a local
food bank or provide up to
400 meals in a soup kitchen. At the Gaylord CROP
Hunger Walk, each walker
has the opportunity to raise
money through individual
donations. Area churches
also hold events such as bake
sales and donate those pro-
ceeds to the Walk.
Individuals and businesses
also make donations, and
online giving is a donation
segment that is rapidly grow-
ing as well.
Organizers are asking that
participants bring food dona-
tions to the walk for the Food
Pantry. Items in particular
need include peanut butter,
cereal, tuna and canned fruit.Registration for the walk
will take place at 1:30 pm on
Sunday at the Friendship
Church in Gaylord, located at
415 North Ohio Street. The
CROP Hunger Walk will begin
at 2 pm.

Kellys Antiques & Furniture Barnoffer quality vintage and custom furniture
By Jim Akans
When looking to refurnish, redecorate or
simply revitalize the furniture and accessory
items in your home or cottage, dont miss the
opportunity to check out the amazing selec-
tion of vintage and custom furniture at
Kellys Antiques & Furniture Barn located in
Charlevoix. The fascinating facility encom-
passes over 7,000 square feet of ever chang-
ing vintage furniture and accessories, plus
another 1,500 square feet of custom furni-
ture items. From antique wicker to Early
American and European imports, the vast
selection is sure to tantalize the imagination
of virtually every furniture shopper.
Don Kelly founded his business back in
1985, as he recalls, it was in a small room off
my garage. I loved working with furniture,
and while attending a furniture show I dis-
covered a new type of finish stripper that
worked extremely well. I went home, tried it
out, and started my new business. It kept
expanding and I moved into my current
location in 1990.
Kelly adds, Something we specialize in is
wicker furniture items. This
is a great time of year to look
for wicker furniture, as it is
great addition to porches orsunroom areas during the
warm weather months. We
also sell lots of old pine, oak
and items made from other
woods as well. Vintage fur-
niture is generally made with
sold wood or very good
veneers. The workmanship
and craftsmanship is excel-
lent.
The services offered at
Kellys Antiques & Furniture
Barn also include customizing
the size of furniture to match
the customers needs, and they
will paint, stain and refinish items to match
the customers dcor if they desire.
Kellys Antiques and Furniture Barn is
located at 6176 Old US 31 South in
Charlevoix. They are open Monday through
Friday from 8 am until 4 pm, and Saturday
and Sunday from 9:00 am until 1 pm. For
additional information, please call (231) 547-
