The returned money recognises the Council’s efforts in mitigating risk and managing individual insurance claims to ensure the best result for the community. This is another example of your Council’s history of sound financial management and the staff’s diligence and expertise in securing the best results on behalf of the community. It should also be noted that City of Ryde has received rebates for risk management initiatives for the past seven years. Showcasing community pride You only have to walk the streets of your neighbourhood to see how much people love their gardens, be they large or small, and take pride in showcasing them for the benefit of the wider community. I recently met a talented bunch of people whose creativity, patience and hard work has resulted in their gardens, balconies, drive ways, courtyards, veggie patches and bushcare sites being worthy of recognition. I’m talking of course about the recipients of our annual Spring Garden Competition Awards that took place last week at a very down-to-earth event at Eden Gardens. These residents, some as young as four, others in their eighties, take tremendous pride and joy in their work and the community is all the richer for it. You can see all the winning entries at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/springgardencompetition An afternoon of Exotic Wonders Another talented and dedicated group are the musicians of the Ryde Hunters Hill Symphony Orchestra, who present Exotic Wonders, their final performance of the year on Sunday 2 November, 3.00pm at the Civic Centre. This concert will be a real crowd-pleaser and features Rodrigo’s famous ‘orange juice’ guitar concerto Aranjeuz, plus Scheherazade (Rimsky-Korsakov), the haunting Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 (Villa-Lobos) and the elegant Pavane by Fauré. If you’re a classical music buff you’ll know these works, but if you’re a new comer, or just curious, this selection is a perfect introduction and the Ryde Civic Centre is a good venue because you get to sit close to the musicians and the music happens all around you. This is an experience you don’t get in the bigger concert halls. The orchestra is made up of professional players and highly-skilled students and is another example of local pride on show. So, let’s get behind them and show them our appreciation. Tickets are $15-35, [email protected] 0457 278 795.
