Craft project Craft project Craft project group We meet every other THURSDAY at NOON in the Quimby Room, where we’re learning to make the bed mats for homeless folks, being taught us by Shirley Sandlin (here’s a picture), wherein plastic grocery bags are re‐purposed. They are woven into cords and then crocheted to form an attractive, comfortable, water‐proof mat. Each mat takes several weeks to complete but as a group we can make as many of these as possi‐ble. The crochet needle is size K, which can be bought for under $2. How everyone can help is by bringing clean, dry plastic grocery bags to the collection container in

Builder’s Hall. It’s ok if there are holes in the bottom, but no produce bags, please. If you want to work on your own craft project, preferring to do your own thing. Please feel free to bring it. Our group is a comfortable and casual group for our purposes. Bring a sack lunch too so our tummies won’t be growling during our meeting. For more information, e‐mail group organ‐izer Alline Dawson at [email protected]@[email protected], whose co‐leader is Carthel Smejkal at [email protected][email protected][email protected]. Upcoming meetings are THURSDAYS, MARCH 10 & 24, times TBA. For more information on the sleeping mat project, please e‐mail Shirley Sandlin at [email protected]@[email protected]

Our midweek celebrations in the Great Hall feature a talk by Jesse Jennings or a guest (see below), plus live music, poetry, prayer support, fun surprises, and a warm feeling of community! At a time of major transition — overcoming an identity crisis and grief, 800 miles from her home, family, business, and country to begin her ministerial training — Rev. Elle Bratland learned how to use Science of Mind principles to create a wonderful new life. Born and raised in Canada, Elle studied with Dr. Carleton Whitehead in Chicago, where she received her practitioner’s license, then took her ministerial training in California with Drs. Frank and Anita Richelieu.

Then she ministered in the Cape Coral and Boca Raton, Fla. Churches of Religious Science. Come hear her speaks on Open at the top on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 2. Dick Schmelzkopf will also offer some of his original verse.

Each week’s is led by a CLC practitioner, and lasts about 35 minutes, ending in time to comfortably get into the 11:00 celebration. There is music to enhance as you are guided into a

restful state, and inspirational read‐ings to tap into your spiritual center. Most sessions will end with a spiritual mind treatment based on the theme of the readings. Don’t be concerned about being late. There is an easy way to quickly get into the flow. Stand a moment outside the door and bring yourself to complete silence. Maintain that silence as you enter. You’ll find yourself suddenly present in the meditation and all is well. SUNDAYS 10:15‐10:50AM, upstairs in the Learning Center.

With three decades of performing festi‐vals, concert halls, coffeehouses, colleges, and house concerts, along with a half dozen acclaimed CDs, Bernice Lewis is also

a published poet, a producer, and an educator extraordinaire. Lewis — who studied vocal improvisation with Bobby McFerrin, guitar technique with Alex DeGrassi and Guy van Duser, and songwriting with Rosanne Cash and Cris Williamson — has been a featured performer on NPR’s “Mountain Stage” program, as well as at the Kennedy Center. She was a finalist in the prestigious New Folk Songwriting Contest at the Kerrville Folk Festival, where she is a main stage favorite, and her ballad, “Bridges That Hold,” was included in Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Lifelines” video (PBS). She was featured in Yoga Journal for her work with sound and yoga, and has shared the stage with Dar Williams, Dixie Chicks, Patty Griffin, Pete Seeger, Ellis Paul, Rory Block, Livingston Taylor, Odetta, Christine Lavin, Marty Sexton, Patty Larkin, and Catie Curtis, among others. Bernice teaches songwriting at Williams and Colorado Colleges, as well as at schools and retreat centers. She has also been an Artist‐in‐Residence and workshop presenter at the Omega Institute, Kripalu Center, and Esalen Institute. In 2008, she was awarded an Artist‐in‐Residence position by the National Park Service. Bernice is also becom‐ing widely known for her multimedia History Alive presentation about her family’s emigration from Nazi Germany, designed for junior and senior high students. Her song, “Ways to Survive,” won an award from the American Zionist Movement in 1996. Hear her again at both our services on SUNDAY, MARCH 13!

    Singer/songwriter

    Bob Livingston has

    never been a traditional

    country musician living

    the honky‐tonk life,

though he’s spent more than his share of time on the roadhouse

circuit with some of the most colorful music legends In Texas. As a member of Austin’s legendary Lost Gonzo Band for many years, performing and recording with such visionaries as Jerry Jeff Walker, Michael Martin Murphey, and Ray Wylie Hubbard, Livingston played an integral role in creating the music that first earned Austin the designation of “Live Music Capital of the World.” Achieving recognition in their own right, the Gonzo’s self‐titled debut record was name by Rolling Stone “one of the best albums ever to come out of Austin.” Hailing originally from Lub‐bock, Livingston has traveled since the 1980s as a Music Ambassador for the US Dept. of State, taking Texas music to India, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. As Livingston says, “When all else fails, music prevails.” This philosophy earned him the honor of being appointed Austin’s “International Music Ambas‐sador,” in 2010 by the Austin City Council. This world‐traveled view was reflected in his album, Mahatma Gandhi and Sitting Bull, released in 2004 and named by the Austin American‐Statesman one of the year’s top ten CDs. With his Texas Music Award‐winning follow‐up, Gypsy Alibi, co‐produced with Lloyd Maines, Livingston presents a mixed bag of folk‐rock, Americana, country and rockabilly, with an epic or two thrown in. Of this album, the Austin Chronicle said, “Beautifully crafted, world music‐inspired songwriting.” He visits again on SUNDAY, MARCH 20!

Exploring the Power of Dreams,Exploring the Power of Dreams,Exploring the Power of Dreams, Intuition and Imagination Intuition and Imagination Intuition and Imagination class

Attention all dreamers! Come, awaken and develop latent skills to dream, intuit and read the signs and symbols meant for you. Rev. Elle Bratland and Rhonda Toppel, practitioner/R.N./shamanic healer will facilitate this four‐week course where we will tap into nine powers of Dreaming, nine rules of Coincidence and seven secrets of Imagination. We will explore, nurture and expand our relationship with our souls in a highly participatory way,

so buckle up! We will be using the book, The Three Only Things, by Robert Moss, who is famous for his dream work. His exciting primer will guide us to journey into our deeper, magical selves. If you have ever said, “It was only a dream, or only a coincidence, or only a feeling” and yet suspected deeply that it was something more, it was! We have been on a journey with the Divine forever, but some have forgotten, been wounded, disillusioned or lied to. Emerson’s “Spiritual Laws” gives vital navigational guidance for our life journeys. “Each of us has our own vocation. The talent is the call. There is one direction in which all space is open to us... We are like ships in a river; we run against obstructions on every side but one; on that side all obstruction is taken away, and we sweep serenely over a deepening channel into an infinite sea... For the more truly we consult our own powers, the more difference will our work exhibit from the work of any other... Every person has this call of the power to do something unique, and no person has any other call.” The class meets four TUESDAYS, 7:00‐9:30PM, MARCH 8‐29. It’s open to everybody and the cost is $90 if paid the first night, or $25 per class. You’ll need the Moss book and a journal. Please sign up in Builders’ Hall and for more information, please e‐mail [email protected]@[email protected]

Opie Peña grew up in small town of Port LaVaca and at a young age knew that music was the nectar of life.

Starting in church like most singers, she gained a plethora of knowledge from not only fellow musicians within the church but also from studying the popular artists at that time. Start‐ing stage appearances at age 10 she was very comfortable with perform‐ing for 3 people to over 1,000 and gave her all at every performance. She professionally began singing at age 15 and has been involved in multi‐ple cover bands as well as some origi‐nal bands touring all over South and Central Texas. Besides music Opie is also a nurse by day. She has a huge support system composed of her husband Stephen and their children. Her dream? To do what she loves everyday! Opie makes her first visit to Creative Life on EASTER SUNDAY, MARCH 26, performing along with our music director Geoffry Oshman (also from Port Lavaca!) and Peter Trout.

Seniors’ bus trips!Seniors’ bus trips!Seniors’ bus trips! Larry Dines, Ruth Catalogna, and a couple more CLCers are now certified Harris County Precinct 4 trip coordi‐nators, and will be leading day trips for those 50 and over, leaving from and returning to CLC. They can schedule three trips every six months. For trips from May‐October 2016, reservations must be made between March 1‐31. The first trip will be to the Painted Churches in Schulenburg in May. The other two trips will be scheduled shortly, possibly a winery tour, and a trip to a museum and botanical gardens in Orange. Transportation is provided free to persons 50 years and older. This includes fuel and toll charges. Our group would be respon‐sible for parking fees, a meal for the driver when the group stops to eat, and admission charge for the driver to any event the group attends which charges for admission. Obviously each person in the group must pay for their own meal and admission fee. Larry suggests that on every trip our group takes, each individual con‐tributes $5 to a trip fund to cover such charges. This will not be refund‐able, but will accumulate if the entire amount were not used on each trip. That way, attendance to an expensive venue in the future would be covered by the growing fund. The first trip to the Painted Churches requires no fees for parking or admis‐sion, so the only expense will be for lunch for each individual and the driver — some restaurants comp meals for the driver. A total of 15 buses are available for use. For our purposes, either the 14‐ or 20‐passenger bus will fit our needs. In order to reserve either of these busses we are required to have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 people in our group. In the event that our group grows in time, other vehi‐cles can accommodate from 27 to 39 passengers. To participate, please sign up at the display in Builders’ Hall, and with any questions please e‐mail Larry at [email protected]@[email protected]

What we teach our childrenWhat we teach our childrenWhat we teach our children We teach our children that God is Life — the Life within each of them and in all Creation — that all people are children of the One God, and therefore, are all brothers and sisters. ••• We teach that God is all‐inclusive and we are each created in the image of God — Good. ••• We teach that God is Love, and we honor God‐in‐all through love, not fear. ••• We teach that sin is simply a mistake and when we make mistakes, we are punished by them, not by God. ••• We teach that God is Spirit and present everywhere, that this Spirit is within us and speaks to us through our minds when we are willing to listen. ••• We teach that there are spiritual laws that must be understood and followed, just as we follow human laws. ••• We teach that religion is something to be used every day, not just on Sundays. ••• We teach that Religious Science is a religion that can be used at home, at school and at play; that since God is within us, heaven is also within us, that is we learn to live our lives in harmony with God’s Law, we live in heaven now. ••• We teach that keeping the mind focused on good causes a richer experi‐ence of life. ••• We teach that God is truth and beauty, peace and harmony; that as we grow to be more like God, our lives will be filled with health, hap‐piness and success. ••• We teach that nothing is too wonderful to happen, nothing is too good to be true: everything is possible to God through me and you! —adapted from a work by Dorothy Quigley

Featured bookFeatured bookFeatured book ...for March is Alter Your Life, by Emmet Fox. It’s a collection of his shorter essays and pamphlets, and we’ll focus on one chapter, “The Seven Main Aspects of God.”

Grand Parkway opens!Grand Parkway opens!Grand Parkway opens! Those coming to us from the south and west of the enormous greater Houston area will have a much less daunting drive now that the Grand Parkway (State Highway 99) has been completed through our area. Bear in mind it is toll road, so you might consider getting an EZ Tag for your vehicle. Exits approaching from the west include FM 2920, Kuyken‐dahl, Gosling, and the new Spring‐woods Village Parkway. Easiest for you is to exit and turn right onto Gosling, then go to the first light, which is Spring‐Stuebner. Turn left and we'll be on your left after about a block. Go just past our drive and u‐turn through the esplanade to enter our campus. In March the Grand Parkway opens all the way to I‐59 in Porter, too!
