Pronouns
Pronouns are words used to replace a noun. Without pronouns, spoken and written English would be very repetitive.
Sam heard a noise from the cave. There was definitelysomething inside it.
Nicola loves to play golf. She finds it very relaxing.
‘She’ was used instead of saying Nicola again.
‘it’ refers to the cave instead of ‘There was definitely something inside the cave.’

Tuesday 9th June 2020LI: to write the first main paragraph including a relative clause
Success CriteriaI can explain what a relative clause is.I can write about the Amazon rainforest using relative clauses.I can write my first main paragraph following my plan.I know to start with a general comment then to specific.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Relative Clauses
A relative clause can be used to give additional information about a noun. They are introduced by a relative pronoun like 'that', 'which', 'who', 'whose', 'where' and 'when’.
For example:I won’t stand by the man who smells of slime.
In this example, the relative clause is ‘who smells of slime’. It provides more information about the man. The relative pronoun, ‘who’, is used to connect these clauses in the sentence.
A relative clause is a type of subordinate clause which adapts, describes or modifies a noun by using a relative pronoun. Relative clauses are used to create complex sentences, and they avoid using the same pronoun twice in two separate sentences.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Let’s start with a simple sentence.
Matthew was playing the guitar.
Not very interesting, is it? Why don’t we add some extra information?
Matthew was playing the guitar. He was in his bedroom.
How could we improve this even further?
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Let’s make it a complex sentence
Matthew, who was in his bedroom, was playing the guitar.
The second sentence adds a bit of non-vital information to the first one, so we can drop it in as a relative clause, like this…
Matthew was playing the guitar. He was in his bedroom.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
We’ve dropped in a relative clause!
Matthew, who was in his bedroom, was playing the guitar.
The main clause could be a sentence by itself and still make sense:
main clause subordinate clause
Matthew was playing the guitar.
However, the second sentence is now a subordinate clause, which doesn’t make any sense by itself:
Who was in his bedroom.
The subordinate clause has to be stapled into the sentence with commas.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
We’ve replaced the pronoun in the second sentence with a relative pronoun. Can you spot it?
Matthew was playing the guitar. He was in his bedroom.
Matthew, who was in his bedroom, was playing the guitar.
Who is the relative pronoun we use to replace ‘people’ nouns/pronouns.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
We are going to write the first main paragraph of our non-chronological reports today.
We know that it does not have to be in any order but have a think about how the report will flow. For example, my subheadings are • Plants and animals• Why is it important?• The Amazon River
My research shows plants and animals link to both other subheadings so it would be a good idea to have it in the middle. I will write about the Amazon River first, then go on to write about plants and animals – since some are living in the river! – then write about why the rainforest is important. This linksto plants as they are very helpful to us.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
This sentence has been taken from my introduction as an example of how you can create sentences with relative clauses.
The Amazon Rainforest is mostly in Brazil.
How can we add more information? Let’s include info about its size.
The Amazon Rainforest is mostly in Brazil. The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world.
We can rearrange this to include a relative clause
The Amazon Rainforest, which is mostly in Brazil, is the largest tropical rainforest in the world.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Writing the 1st main paragraph
You should try to include a sentence with a relative clause in the
paragraph that you will be writing today.
It is a good idea to start with the general idea or point and then develop those with more specific details.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
The Amazon River, which is the second longest river in the world, flows through
the rainforest itself, meandering through the same nine countries. It is a
whopping 6400km long, that is about 18.5 times the length of the River Thames.
However, unlike the River Thames, there are no bridges that cross the Amazon.
This is because there is no need as the majority of the river runs through
rainforests, not roads or cities. The Amazon River has over 3000 known species of
fish with more being discovered. It is home to the piranha which is a meat-eating
type of fish! Did you know, in 2007, a Slovenian athlete swam 5268km of the
river in 66 days! This gave him his fourth Guinness World Record.

To link your paragraphs together, you can use conjunctions and adverbials. Look at these examples of conjunctions and adverbials that can be used
at the start of a paragraph.

Can you think of anymore?
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Some useful conjunctions. Choose carefully as not all of them would be used in a formal report.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
An adverbial is a word or phrase that is used as an adverb to modify a verb or clause. They can be used in different places within a sentence to create different effects.
Adverbials are used to explain how, where or when something happened; they are like adverbs made up of more than one word.
With some of the tallest trees, the Amazon Rainforest does not get a lot of light reaching the ground.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
The paragraphs in a report are the body of information. Each new paragraph is a new idea or information about the report topic. In non-fiction text like a non-chronological report, we can use subheadings before each paragraph.
Remember, each paragraph has a main idea, it can start with a conjunction or adverbial and the
paragraph includes supporting sentences with further detail.
You can use some of these words and phrases to link your sentences together.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
Write the next 2 paragraphs of your non-chronological
report.
Make sure you follow your plan.
If you need to add more information, you can always do
a quick search online.
Your paragraphs should have subheadings and include
relative clauses and appropriate conjunctions and
adverbial phrases.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
The Amazon Rainforest is important for many different reasons
with the most important being its production of oxygen. It is
referred to as the ‘Lungs of the Planet’ because it produces
more than 20% of the world’s oxygen. Thousands and
thousands of plants and trees take in the carbon dioxide and
release oxygen back into the air. In addition, the Amazon is also
important because it provides us with medicines. Plants from all
over the world have medicinal qualities. There are plants which
are known to have anti-cancer properties, 70% of these are
found in the rainforest. Amazon natives use the plants regularly,
but it is estimated 90% of the ones they use have not yet been
studied by modern science.
What could be improved?
Is it interesting enough?
Does is include detailed information?
What is missing?

Thursday 11th June 2020LI: to write the final paragraph and create a glossary
Success CriteriaI have read through my report so far.I can summarise my report in one paragraph.I can create a glossary of key words used in the text.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
The final paragraph is called the conclusion. The purpose of this paragraph is to sum up the main points of the report. This is a summary of what you want your reader to remember the most.
In conclusion, the Amazon Rainforest has many uses to everyone all around the world including providing oxygen, food and medicine. It is important that we continue to look after it and do everything we can to help the environment, after all, the rainforest does a lot for us!
Before you write the conclusion, read through what you have written so far. This will help you summariseyour main points.
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
A short glossary is always helpful in a non-chronological report, especially if the reader is not familiar with the topic.
Pick out key words from your whole report to write a definition for.
Remember these are words that the reader may not know.
Your glossary does not need to be very long. You will probably have about 5 key words that will need explaining.
Glossary Writing
Kidbrooke Park Primary School – Home Learning
This is another example of a glossary. This one is about the Amazon Rainforest.Remember to only include words from the text in your glossary. If you have not written about orchids then it should not be in theglossary. This may confuse your reader.
