In her career, Twitty has 1,127 kills, 69 service aces, 791 digs, 187 total blocks and 1,305.5 points.

Twitty entered the season having been named to the MW Preseason Team and has been named to the Northern Colorado Classic and Borderland Invitational All-Tournament Teams.

    INSTANT CONTRIBUTOR

After transferring from Memphis, outside hitter Tai Bierria made an immediate impact for the Lobos in 2018, finishing with the second-highest kill total as well as point total on the team behind Twitty.

Bierria had 359 kills and 377.0 points, appearing in 120 sets, starting in 24 of the 30 matches, and registered double-digit kills in 22 matches.

This season, Bierria is second on the team in kills (174), points (205), digs (163) and service aces (18) with three double-doubles and has recorded a service ace in 11 matches including at least one in eight of the last 10. She had a career-high four against Kansas State. The Georgia native has also tallied double-digit kills in nine matches, including four of the last five.

    REPLACING KEY PIECES

Twitty and Bierria are the only two returning starters from a season ago as UNM lost starters to graduation in leading blockers Victoria Spragg and Mariessa Carrasco as well as libero Mercedes Pacheco and outside hitter Carly Beddingfield.

Starting setter Sabrina Bianco transferred to Memphis, leaving UNM with one returning setter in Jaclyn Inclan and a newcomer in Maddie Freiwald, a graduate transfer from Butler. Freiwald, a Colorado native,

played a total of 128 sets in 61 matches, recording 582 assists, 10 service aces, 46 kills,108 digs and 55 total blocks for the Bulldogs.

    INCLAN CAN DO IT ALL

Jaclyn Inclan, a redshirt-sophomore setter, is averaging 5.72 assists a set, tallying a team-high 389 this season. She also contributed with 16 kills, 152 digs, five blocks (one solo) and 12 service aces. She had a career-high 42 assists against GCU and has had five matches with 30 or more assists. The Arizona native has also registered six double-doubles.

AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE (OI, OI, OI!)

Middle blocker Yasmin Tan is finding her role in the starting lineup and making an impact at the net. The junior has started in all 18 matches and played in all but one set. The Melbourne, Australia native is currently second on the team in blocks with 44 (three solo) and fifth in kills with 50 and points (78.5). Nineteen matches in, the junior has already surpassed her season-high totals in total blocks and service aces (five).

    LONG TIME GONE

Of the first 18 matches of the season, UNM has played on the road in all but three.

The Lobos spent their first four weekends of the 2019 season on the road in non-conference tournaments and opened the conference schedule at Colorado State before opening at home on Saturday, Sept. 28 against Wyoming.

During the non-conference portion of the schedule, UNM travelled to Greeley, Colo., Las Cruces, Seattle, Wash., and Denton, Texas for its four tournaments, a total distance of 2779.61 miles (5559.22 roundtrip).

    GOING THE DISTANCE

Eighteen matches in to the season, the Lobos have already played six, five-set matches, continuing a trend from 2018.

In 2018, the Lobos played a total of 12 five-set matches, the most five-set matches in a single season in program history, surpassing the precedent of 10 set in 2012.

Among those five-set matches, the Lobos staged a comeback against North Florida to force a fifth set and ended the season with a victory over MW champion Colorado State.

UNM had its most success in four-set matches, winning six of eight. However, this season the Lobos have played just three four-set matches, playing nine, three-set matches and six, five-set matches.

    NEW START IN NEW MEXICO

First-year head coach Jon Newman-Gonchar picked up his first win as a head coach on Aug. 30 in a three-set win over Rutgers (25-17, 25-12, 25-22).

Joining him on the bench are assistant coaches Jesse Tupac and April Sanchez with Ariel Sanchez serving as director of volleyball operations who are all in their first year at UNM.

    FROM COAST TO COAST

The Lobos represent 11 states spanning from all regions of the country as well as spanning across the globe in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia and Sweden.

Arizona has the largest representation with four in Nicolette Clark, Jaclyn Inclan, Danica Rowan and Morgan Schreckler.

Lobos Picked SEVENTH in MW preseason coaches’ poll

The Lobos were selected to finish seventh in the Mountain West this season, as voted by the league’s 11 coaches in the MW Preseason Coaches’ Poll released August 14.

Colorado State collected 10 first-place votes for 100 points, while Wyoming received the other first-place vote and 91 points.New Mexico received 50 points, six points behind Fresno State and nine points ahead of SDSU.
