Today …

A very warm Welcome to all who are

worshipping with us … especially if you

are visiting Napier or at the Cathedral

for the first time … you are invited to

join us for morning tea (or coffee!)

served at the back of the Cathedral fol-

lowing the 10am service.

2

Stillpoint Wednesday 26 July

12.00 - 12.55pm A time to stop and be still,

starting with Mid-day Prayer and a reflective reading,

followed by a time of silence, closing with a final reflection;

in the Resurrection Chapel. For more details contact the

Rev’ds Dorothy Brooker (TSSF), or Erice Fairbrother (Benedictine).

Te Hakari Tapu (Holy Communion / Eucharist)

The clergy team have explored a variety of options for scheduling Te Hakari Tapu into our rosters ... this year it has been decided to designate the fifth Sunday 10am service as Te Hakari Tapu (when we’re not celebrating significant feast days). We’ll use the New Zealand Prayer Book Eucharistic Liturgy of Thanksgiving and Praise which commences on page 476 - this diglot liturgy uses the same page numbers for the left (te reo Maori) page and the interpretation on the right (English) page. Come join us on Sunday 30 July at 10am.

Napier Community Foodbank

is currently short of jam, soap, flour and

sugar. Many thanks for your

ongoing support.

Today’s Order of Service

This morning’s service follows the Eucharistic Liturgy ‘Thanksgiving and Praise’ commencing on page 476 in the red New Zealand Anglican Prayer Book; the tunes for the hymns may be found in Common Praise, the blue hymn book in the pews;

Presider: Rev’d David van Oeveren Preacher: Rev’d Erice Fairbrother Liturgist: Elisabeth Paterson Organist: Anthony Tattersall

Opening Hymn: Alleluia, sing to Jesus.

Alleluia, sing to Jesus! his the sceptre, his the throne; alleluia, his the triumph, his the victory alone: Hear the songs of holy Zion thunder like a mighty flood; ‘Jesus out of every nation has redeemed us by his blood!’ Alleluia, not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; alleluia, he is near us; faith believes, but knows not how: though the cloud from sight received him, whom the angels now adore, shall our hearts forget his promise, ‘I am with you evermore’?

Alleluia, bread of heaven, here on earth our food, our stay; alleluia, here the sinful come to you from day to day: Intercessor, friend of sinners, earth’s redeemer, plead for me, where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea. Alleluia, king eternal, you, the Lord of lords we own; alleluia, born of Mary, earth your footstool, heaven your throne: you, within the veil have entered, robed in flesh, our great high priest; yours the blood and yours the body, in our Eucharistic feast.

Welcome: Rev’d David van Oeveren

NZPB page: 476 The Gathering of the People

NZPB page: 478 Song of Praise

NZPB page: 478-9 Confession / Forgiveness / Absolution Sentence: The words you have spoken are spirit and life, O Lord; you have the words of eternal life. John 6: 63, 68

Collect: O God, whose good soil brings forth a hundredfold of grain. May we be that soil; vibrant, deep and teeming with life. This we ask in God’s name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who live and reign, one God now and forever. Amen

Reading: Isaiah 55: 10-13 Hugo Powrie

Reading: Romans 8: 1-11 Pam Medcalf

Gradual Hymn: Love divine, all loves excelling.

Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down: fix in us your humble dwelling, all your faithful mercies crown. Jesus, you are all compassion, boundless love that makes us whole: visit us with your salvation, enter every trembling soul. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all your grace receive: suddenly return, and never, never more your temple leave.

You we would be always blessing, serve you as your hosts above, pray, and praise you without ceasing, glory in your perfect love. Finish then your new creation: pure and sinless let us be; let us see your great salvation, perfect in eternity. Changed from glory into glory till in heaven we take our place, there to cast our crowns before you, lost in wonder, love and praise!

Gospel Reading: Matthew 13: 1-9, 18-23 Rev’d David van Oeveren

The Sermon: Rev’d Erice Fairbrother

NZPB page: 481 The Affirmation of Faith

NZPB page: 482 The Prayers of the People Elisabeth Paterson

NZPB page: 485 The Peace

We greet the people near us, saying ‘Peace be with you’ / ‘Kia tau te rangimarie’. During the next hymn the bread and wine, symbols of Christ’s life, are brought to the altar; our offerings of money that support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral are collected and brought forward also.

Offertory Hymn: Now to your table spread.

NZPB page: 485 The Preparation of the Gifts

NZPB page: 485 The Great Thanksgiving

NZPB page: 488 Te Inoi a te Ariki (The Lord’s Prayer)

Now to your table spread we come, each one, in faith that you alone provide the words of life and death: in wine and bread, in promised food we find your loving heart, O God. Hands of the world stretched out, your mystery to touch in longing to believe a truth beyond our reach, to sing in joy, to cry in grief, to know the meaning for our life.

Here is our common wealth in sharing what is good, as though all humankind around one table stood, this bread to break, this wine to taste - one people in the name of Christ.

NZPB page: 489 The Invitation

All are welcome to share the bread and wine of Christ’s life, or to receive a blessing - please come to the altar rails via the centre aisle and then return to your seats via the side aisles. Please advise an usher if you need to have communion served in your seat.

NZPB page: 490 Prayer after Communion

The Blessing: Rev’d David van Oeveren We share notices and news

Closing Hymn: We have a gospel to proclaim. SG 331.

The Dismissal: Haere i runga i te aroha. Haere i runga i te rangimārie. Go now to love and serve the Lord. Go in peace. Āmine. Ka haere mātou i runga i te ingoa o te Karaiti. Korōria ki te Atua. Amen. We go in the name of Christ.

We have a gospel to proclaim, good news for all throughout the earth; the gospel of a saviour’s name: we sing his glory, tell his worth. Tell of his birth at Bethlehem, not in a royal house or hall but in a stable dark and dim: the Word made flesh, a light for all. Tell of his death at Calvary, hated by those he came to save; in lonely suffering on the cross for all he love, his life he gave.

Tell of that glorious Easter morn: empty the tome, for he was free; he broke the power of death and hell that we might share his victory. Tell of his reign at God’s right hand, by all creation glorified; he sends his Spirit on his church to live for him, the lamb who died.
