Good Afternoon Parents:
It was another great week of learning at SCMS. It is great to see the number of students attending classes and being engaged. I am
so proud of our students and teachers for what they have been able to accomplish during this time of virtual learning. Although
not easy, all have risen to the task. Our teachers are working tirelessly to prepare the right lessons at the right time for your
student(s). I will say this each week probably because it is needed at this time more than ever. Please thank a teacher. My goal is
to try to help them with self-care and the need to take care of their families too while they are wonderfully teaching your great
student(s).
Most importantly, this week I want to mention something which is necessary for our school to continue to prosper and for your
students to always have what they need to receive the epitome of learning at SCMS. Although we have been teaching and learning
in a virtual format, it still does not erase the fact we need money to support the programs we use for instruction. Although the
students are not physically here, we need the same amount of money as we always have so we can supplement state and local
dollars for instructional materials/programs/etc. As many of you know, the
Capital Campaign sponsored by our great PTO is the main source of funding for the supplemental money we need. All
money is used for programs that support ALL students. In years past, it has supported our technology initiative and sent teachers
to the Technology conference in Florida to learn how to maximize our current technology and add more cutting edge
programs. This money has updated our library catalog and continues to provide monies so we remain the library students
gravitate toward due to an up to date catalog of books, e-books and more. Furniture for the library has been purchased which is
conducive to middle school students as they learn. These are just a few things this money has helped us buy in the past few
years. Please support the Capital Campaign. We have received to date the lowest amount of money in ten years at this point in
the year. We currently have collected only $8,000.00 of our $30,000 goal. Please understand we know families may be in different
situations financially this year due to the pandemic; however, if you can give, please do so. We are appreciative of the State and
Local funding given to us; however, it does not cover the instructional materials we need so our students can rank at the top as
they have for many years. I appreciate in advance your contribution.
Please remember Monday September 28th is a workday for teachers. Students receive a well-deserved holiday.
I hope you and your student(s) have a wonderful long weekend. As always, thank you for allowing us to serve them. They are
truly the best!
Kindest Regards,
Lisa Bailes

CMS families are encouraged to have their children immunized for the 2020-2021 school year. Vaccines and health assessments are required by the state for
children to attend school. On Aug. 11, N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper extended the compliance deadline for immunizations and health assessments to Oct. 31.
Vaccinations are required for students entering kindergarten, seventh grade and 12th grade. Families may receive more information from their doctor, school nurse or the Mecklenburg County Public Health Department, 704-336-6500,
which has vaccine-only appointments.
SCMS Parents! Now that school is in full swing there are a few areas in which we could use
volunteers. Please consider joining a committee to help throughout the year. The lead
Committee Chairs will email you before events and you can decide at that time whether you
can help out or not. Most of these things are simply sending in sweets or other treats.
Thank you so much for helping as we work through this very unpredictable year!

Box Tops For
Education
Please send in any clipped Box Tops coupons you have at home. Two ways to submit
Box Tops: 1) Drop them off at the front office
2) Download the Box Tops for
Education App. Link the App to SCMS, scan the receipt and done.
Any BoxTops products on the receipt will automatically be
credited to SCMS. Soon, the app will be the only way to submit. In the meantime, Box Tops is allowing double the credit from the
scanning of the receipt and clipping of the coupon. Let’s all take advantage and double our earnings for our school.
Funds raised are used by the PTO to better our school in many ways. Thank you so much to all the families who continue to
support our school through the Box Tops for Education

Dear SCMS
Families,
We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to
educate the children in our school this year. We value input from our community,
and we need to hear from your child(ren)! They are important partners as we work to
improve their overall experience and support their needs.
In order to learn more about student experiences, we will be asking for your child’s
feedback via an online survey on October 1, 2020. The survey shouldn’t take more
than 20-30 minutes to complete.
We are asking that all of our students participate in the survey, as their feedback will
provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how to improve and adapt our
school to their needs. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to
answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether.
The survey content will ask students to self-reflect on their own social emotional
learning skills, like self-management and self-efficacy. Please notify us if you would
like your child to opt out of taking the surveys by emailing your child's
SEL/Homeroom teacher.
We thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions about the survey
administration, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Lisa Bailes

Online School Payments (OSP) - CMS has provided us with the opportunity to accept payments for
school events on-line. It is much like Athletics Pay-to-Play, comes with a fee (4%), and allows you to
pay at your convenience. If you choose to pay on-line, it also relieves our teachers from the time
taken to do the paperwork and to receipt and turn in money or checks. Teachers will continue to take
cash and checks as they always have.
Just sign in to: osp.osmsinc.com/CMS
Choose your student’s event and homeroom teacher, and make payment.
The teacher and Financial Secretary are sent advisements of your payment.
We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. Through the year, events will be
added including field trips, textbooks, fees, and other payments.
