In line with the spirit of National Arbour Week, Transnet Freight Rail CE Siyabonga Gama, together with EXCO members and TFR colleagues braved the cold weather to witness the planting of a tree at TFR’s Parktown Inyanda 2 Building on the 7th September 2012. The National Arbour Week was implemented in 1999 by the South African government; this was an extension of the National Arbour Day first celebrated by the country in 1983. GM Risk Management Mandisa Mondi welcomed guests and said a few words. She thanked everyone present and highlighted on the importance of trees in our lives. “If you look after a tree, the tree will look after you” she said. Mondi further gave the name of the tree which was to be planted, “Today we are going to plant a Water Berry tree”, she said before urging fellow colleagues to set a target of planting at least 1 tree each and every year. Gama then took to the stage. Before giving his speech, he started by sharing a joke about the weather on the day. “It is clear that the concept of global warming is with us, winter is fighting back as no one would have thought we would be wearing coats on the 7th of September it being the season of Spring”, he said.

Pyramid South Depot employees held a
demonstration as part of their Symposium
slot on the 13th of June 2013. Pyramid
South is under the Steel and Cement
Business Unit. The event was organised
by Mosidi Modipa, Safety Official; Sinazo
Mcitwa Chief Administrative Official and
William Stevenson, the Movement Section
Manager. The new financial year hasn’t
been good for this depot given the
number of IOD’s that they experienced.
The June month saw the depot
experiencing two incidents that took place
on two consecutive days in the same
location. These incidents caused a huge
concern for employees.
The day started off with a symposium and
employees were divided into four teams
(Movement, CTC, Yards and Safety) for
the activity. The various teams were
tasked to write messages of commitment
on their placards identifying common
unsafe behaviours that can be eliminated
within the work environment.
The march was then extended to the
whole depot as employees marched
around the building and went into the
offices and sitting areas spreading safety
messages. The demonstration was used
as a tool to express employees’
standpoint on safety and their place in the
puzzle. The winning placard prompted
employees to pledge to work safely and
commit to adhere to golden safety
actions. Pyramid South employees

On 5 June a simulation exercise was conducted at Bayhead Yard involving a cross functional approach. Amongst the participants were the following: • TFR Operations and Safety; • Railway Safety Regulator; • NOSA officials; • Spill Tech; • Local PRASA; and • Transnet Engineering. The purpose of the simulation was to test: • The reaction time of respondents; • Level of knowledge of respondents; • Level of ability to handle a hazard material (hazmat) site The Scenario…. “Derailment of flammable gas tank and DZ wagon (latter derailing four wheels). Gas tank was leaking due to a rupture in belly of tank; DZ wagon had also caught fire.” Process… Various role players were activated at different times as per the standard procedure. The activation and response times were recorded. Site meetings were conducted at regular intervals to keep everybody informed and on the same wave length until the site was declared safe for the recovery process to commence. Observations and Conclusion: At the end of the simulation exercise debriefing session was conducted and each role player was given a chance to share their observation. With an exception of two deviations, the simulation was a great success. Rail Safety Regulator in particular commended the level of co-ordination and the manner in which different role players co-operated. Leon Gerber Corporate Affairs

A Community Awareness Campaign between Transnet Freight Rail, the SAPS Mounted Unit and the Railway Police was conducted in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth on 13 June 2013. New Brighton was identified as a “High Risk” area and the objective of the campaign was to create awareness in this community. In the last 3 months this area was targeted by criminals who illegally entered the rail environment and stole items which resulted in a threat to safe train operations. The items which are targeted are signal heads, relays from signal apparatus
boxes and pendrol springs. In the process, the perpetrators place their own lives in danger as they expose themselves to the possibility of being electrocuted by the High Voltage Overhead equipment. During the campaign, cards with a safety message were handed out to the community members. Without the support of the public at large, including the relevant authorities, Transnet Freight Rail would not be able to control incidents at our railway lines. Leon Gerber Corporate Affairs

Parktown precinct’s role as a support

The GM of HC Tumelo Mokwena, delivering his speech,
Katlego Tlhabanelo of Strategy and Business Planning explaining the MDS
Sekgaile Semenya conducting the proceedings of the day
Employees listening

The general manager of Human capital Tumelo Mokwena hosted a dialogue session at Inyanda House 1, Parktown on the 21st of June 2013. The objective of the session was to clearly define the role that the Parktown precinct plays as a support system to the employees in the depots. The programme of the day was directed by Sekgaile Semenya an employee of corporate affairs. The importance of the support system starts with discipline and ensuring that the goal of each and every one’s job is met at all times. Attitude towards one’s work plays a huge role and living the values of the culture charter is very important. Employees were given a chance to ask questions and address issues that are of concern to them. . Tumelo Mokwena further encouraged employees to be ambitious and work hard for TFR to be amongst the top 5 railways in the world by 2019. Passion and discipline can possibly make us the number one railway in the world. Mr Mokwena illustrated how most of the Top railways in the world are using fewer resources to meet and exceed their target year in and out. TFR has no excuse not to reach its targets especially because we are using some of the best technologies and ample manpower. Correct utilization of our resources will see us creating better opportunities not only for ourselves but also for the rest of the country. Taking ownership of one’s work brings great outputs because when you love what you do you will not work a single day of your life.
Inyanda precinct has the highest absenteeism after Emerlo which is number one, there is also a trend of presenteesm which is characterised by employees being present at work but not doing their work and with no outputs at the end of the day. Katlego Tlhabanelo further gave insight into the current status of the MDS as well as what is required to accomplish all the set requirements. TFR’s mandate is to move tonnages and give good customer service in order to move freight business from road to rail while the mandate of the support employees is to give good service to the depot or field employees. Containers and Automotive Business Unit GM, Themba Gwala recently visited Newcastle to meet with the Newcastle Mayor and his executive committee. The meeting was held over dinner at the Blackrock Hotel in Newcastle to align and brief the Mayor about the new Newcastle Multipurpose Terminal that is currently under construction in the area. This project is envisaged to bring about economic growth and employment opportunities to Newcastle. At the dinner, in his presentation Themba explained that the global trend is towards the development of inland Ports or Hubs that have direct access to the Coastal Ports. Newcastle has the potential of a HUB developing around its natural industry. The terminal’s throughput capacity is four trains per day. He
indicated that Transnet Freight Rail would require support from the Mayor’s office in order to see the project through. The Mayor’s representatives in turn pledged to support the project and requested to see the site accompanied by the GM and his executive committee. The next day the GM visited the Newcastle depot to address the employees through a dialogue session tackling issues of safety, performance, and scheduled railway year to date. He commended the CAB business unit for keeping up the momentum and emphasized that there should be no room for complacency. He stated that the Newcastle depot has in some instances been struggling to reach their daily
tonnages however; they have been trying despite a variety of reasons due to operational challenges beyond their control. He urged the Newcastle depot employees to come up with solutions with regards to commodities that can be used to compensate for these constraints encountered. Furthermore, he stated that CAB is doing well collectively and should maintain its number one spot within TFR rankings. Zamangwanya Malgas Corporate Affairs

CAB GM Themba Gwala visits Newcastle
Transnet Freight Rail aims to be among
the top 5 railway organisations in the
world by 2019. In our quest to achieve
this, we have to align with the best
business practices being utilised in
countries already ranked amongst the
top railways worldwide. This is why TFR
Management is consulting with labour
and is exploring ways to increase Train
Driver capacity to meet the operational
needs of the Market Demand Strategy
and to be ranked amongst the most
efficient railways. In doing so the one
manned Train Driver working, is one of
the practices being explored by both
Management and Labour.
In this article we will try to break down
and find out what the Human Factor
Study is all about with regard to our
railway business especially train drivers
and train traffic control officers.
According to research, it was found that
sleepiness and fatigue are a frequent
problem in railway transportation
because of the irregular shift schedules.
The Human factor study is aimed at
studying the occurrence of sleepiness
during shifts and deducing which shift
has a higher percentage of errors
associated with the occurrence of severe
sleepiness and to also come up with
innovative ways that can reduce such
from the organization.
The specialist appointed to do the study
will randomly select train drivers and
traffic controllers, and what they
normally do is create questionnaires to
be answered by the train drivers and
also create a sleep wake record booklet,
that will be handed over to the drivers.
The drivers use this booklet to fill in
records of when they sleep and wake up
for a period of 21 days. In railway
organisations in other countries a sleep
diary was used to collect information on
sleepiness at work and sleeping times
during the 21 consecutive days of study.
In countries which have taken upon this
Human Factor Study, it was found that
severe sleepiness was reported to be at
49 %( train drivers) and 50%(traffic
controllers) in the night shift and 20%
(train drivers) and 15% (traffic
controllers) of the morning shift.(Ingre et
al. 2000 Finland). Seeing that TFR is a
railway organization, it is necessary to
engage in such studies to see how we
can better our operations.
The train drivers and controllers’ work
has unique features when compared to
other professional truck drivers and
controllers. A Train driver’s work load is
higher because there are a lot of
technicalities that come with driving the
train. While paying attention in the
process of driving the train, a lot has to
be taken into consideration. The driver is
focussed on controlling the speed and
acceleration as well as navigating
through various landscapes whilst being
observant of traffic signs and
communication from traffic controllers.
This kind of work comes with intense
periods of information encoding and
problem solving. Already with the brain
capturing a lot of information at one go,
it finds itself overworking and when this
happens it gets tired within a short space
of time and in that case, mistakes can
happen and these mistake tend to cause
accidents.
There are also shift schedules which are
irregular and come with short intervals of
rest. In other information found in other
countries, it was reported that train
drivers experience fatigue at least once a
week and this happens during night and
morning shifts.
Reducing fatigue in our railways is a
matter of safety, especially since safety
is TFR’s number one priority. Mostly lack
of alertness brought on by fatigue could
cause accidents and near accidents.
In order to prevent fatigue in our
business, it’s imperative to know the
characteristics of the schedules that are
related to excessive sleepiness. As we
are a 24hour business it is impossible to
avoid night and early morning shifts, but
it is possible for us to take some time to
rest, when the time presents itself. In
the train driver business, we need to
make sure that we take the opportunity
to rest, since our shifts intervals are very
short.
We need to understand that doing this
Human Factor Study; it’s not about
pointing out people who fall asleep on
the job. It’s about getting information
based on facets that can cause accident
and to create a better working
environment for all of us, in the order to
reach 700 000 tons safely daily.
As Transnet Freight Rail we will be
conducting this Human Factor Study to
make sure that we run our operations
accordingly without putting strain on any
of our employees. This action will also
break barriers in the African continent as
it will be the first of its kind in the
motherland.

A glimpse into our past
The rail industry of South Africa has a history dating back over 150 years, over the years there has been many advancements in the technology, tools and methodologies used for rail operations. For the past five years Mr, Willie Erasmus from the movement depot in Kroonstad has been actively collecting priceless pieces showing the rich past of the railways. Willies’ passion has possesses some magic to it, the Kroonstad movement depot has museum-like qualities transporting the mind back in time, “It is difficult to say why I collect antiques just have something that amazes me. I also think you’ve got to be a little crazy to see the beauty in antiques, because most of the time they are worn out, dirty or not that good looking and as shiny as new articles. I think this is what they call character” said Willie when asked about the inspiration behind the collection. The collection is made up by contributions from depots such as Kroonstad, Potchefstroom, Kimberley and Durban, “Some of the items come from people who have gone on pension or resigned and took with memorabilia only to realize after a couple of years that it all lays in storage with nobody there to see it. So they return it to me for safekeeping and display, that’s why I say the collection is ours and not mine!!
Each and every item has its own unique charm for instance telephones, of which there is a large collection, makes one wonder about all the conversations that were being had, the good times, the bad. There are keys from 1928 and one can only imagine the many kilometres covered by them, each item has its own story. Everybody is encouraged to pay Kroonstad a visit and the collection themselves, Willie will be waiting with open arms to give a brief tour. “The collection is about 5 years old and the reason why I collect, is to try and preserve something from this Company for the youth. We don’t all have the time or money to go to museums and maybe I can inspire a youngster to continue with the collection when I retire” added Willie. Ashley Moetlo Corporate Affairs

Perception, Reality and Common
Misconceptions about Guide Dogs for
People with Vision Impairment.
Guide Dogs: Perception and Reality
We're all familiar with the image of dogs guiding people with
vision loss along streets and through public spaces. But unless
you've actually benefited from one of these specially trained
animals, you probably have no idea what wonderful mobility
tools and loving companions they can be.
The guide dog is a "mobility aid" that can enable people who
are blind or have low vision to travel safely. Guide dogs can
guide people around obstacles and through crowds, stop at
curbs and stairs, and sometimes even be trained to find a
limited number of objects that are within sight when given
orders such as "Find the chair," "Find the door," or "Find the
elevator." The guide dog user can also train (or "pattern") the
dog to find frequently used landmarks, such as a bus stop pole
or a mailbox.
Common Misconceptions about Guide Dogs
One common misconception is that people who are blind or
have low vision and don't have orientation and mobility (O&M)
travel skills can use a guide dog to travel safely and
independently; people mistakenly assume that it is the dog that
shows the person where to go. This is not true. The person
who is blind or has low vision directs the dog; the function and
purpose of the dog is to merely guide the person around
obstacles and indicate the location of steps and curbs.
Another misconception is that guide dogs indicate when it is
safe to cross the street. This is also not true. For example, at
a traffic signal, the guide dog does not know when the light
changes from green to amber to red. It is the person who
determines when it is safe to cross the street and which way to
go; the dog then guides the person across the street to reach
the other side. Although the dog does not know when it is safe
to cross the street, if it sees a car approaching too close, it has
been trained to stop or attempt to move the person out of the
way.
We want colleagues in TFR to have a better understanding
regarding various lifestyles of disabled people.

Platform, one of the company’s key communication tools, has undergone some changes. In line with the strategy to reclaim traffic from road back to rail, the magazine has been renamed Back to Rail. The previous name held the passenger connotation which is no longer core to the business. We have also taken on a new look and feel. Give us feedback on your thoughts about the new changes by e-mailing to [email protected] or [email protected] .

A Romanian company was declared the winner Thursday of a controversial privatisation tender for the national freight rail transporter, a key condition for the country to renew its IMF credit line. "We can now declare a winner, Grupul Feroviar Roman (GFR)," transport minister Relu Fenechiu told a press conference. Fenechiu had previously said that GFR, the sole remaining candidate, had attached conditions to its bid, which he stressed was unacceptable. But after lengthy negotiations, GFR "accepted to pay 904 million lei (202 million euros or $266,7 million) in one instalment," he added. The starting price for the 51-percent stake had been set at 180 million euros. The winner has two months to come up with the money. Fenechiu stressed that GFR would invest an additional 200 million euros to modernise CFR Marfa. GFR was the only company left in the running after a consortium of the Romanian firm TFG and Austrian investment fund Donau-Finanz pulled out Wednesday claiming it did not have enough time to conduct due diligence. This followed the withdrawal on Monday of OmniTRAX, a US railway management group, which also contested the procedure. Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Wednesday dismissed criticism of the tender procedures and stressed that Romania
had to conclude the deal before an IMF board meeting due on June 26. The sale of the heavily-indebted, loss-making carrier is one of the conditions set by the International Monetary Fund under its precautionary 3.5-billion-euro ($4.7-billion) credit line that expires at the end of this month. Romania's government has indicated it wants to negotiate a new agreement with the IMF later this year, although no amount has yet been mentioned. The tender for CFR Marfa was relaunched last month after a first attempt failed when the same three companies were judged by the transport ministry as not having met the conditions for the sale. This year’s confederations cup in Brazil has got few highlights, with Brazil showing signs of a strong comeback of the Brazil we all know, ignorant or not at least most will start to Google Tahiti after their poor performance in this tournament by conceding 6 goals against Nigeria, 10 against Spain and 8 against Uruguay (24 goals in total and scoring only 1). The tournament will end on the 1st July. See the remaining fixtures.
The Dark Side The Springboks remains to be the only competitive team in our sporting affairs this month following the Proteas exit from the ICC Champions trophy against England in the Semi’s as England won by 7 wickets. This led to India winning the series by 5 runs against England. Congratulations to India. In football we all know that Bafana Bafana lost to Ethiopia 2 weeks ago and this narrowed their chance of qualifying for next years World Cup in Brazil, although the dream of qualifying might get a boost pending the outcome of FIFA’s investigation on the Ethiopia matter.
The bright side The springboks had to dig deep on Saturday as they beat Samoa 56 – 23. they will play Argentina in August. Enos Marobane Corporate Affairs
